Hey folks, some friends of mine want to start a modern scene in our area, and I have no idea what to play.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): I'm fickle. But to give a few examples of decks I've enjoyed playing in the past: Bant Crashers (Noble Heirarch + Rafiq of the Many + Shorecrasher Mimic), Pyromancer Ascension control, Jund control with Diabolic Revelation.
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): FNM+. Some of my friends have more competitive decks, but they often switch to more casual decks depending on who shows up.
Favorite Cards/Colors: Probably blue/white.
Budget: $200 is probably all I can afford at the moment, although I'd accept suggestions between $200-$300.
Staples Owned: 4x Snapcasters, 2x Steam Vents, um, 1 Kitchen Finks? I liquidated a lot of my collection about two years ago.
Thanks in advance for the suggestions!
more than control, i think you like deck with powerfull synergies, what about:
Hello,
I'm looking to get into modern so there are more options to play at my local game store.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): I'm more of an aggro, midrange, or combo kind of guy that can finish a player relatively fast. I really don't like games that stall out and go for 15 turns as they feel really boring and are way too atrition-y to me. I've tried tempo decks in standard but as a newly-returned player I have trouble balancing when to control and when to aggro and ultimately not all that enjoyable (played years and years ago but recently returned about 5 months ago just as RTR was at the end of rotation). I find synergistic aggressive decks fun so far from what I have tested. I'm using This Deck in standard right now and am having a really enjoyable time with it.
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): FNM, local tournaments, and playing with friends for fun. I have friends I have met in college that play but we haven't talked about playing outside of the local game store yet.
Favorite Cards/Colors: I really like mono-red, red/blue, or green/black color combinations but those are just slight preferences. I'm open to anything.
Budget: $200-250 is what I'm looking into cash-wise but I would take suggestions up to $400 at most as I have some cards I can trade.
Staples Owned: Absolutely nothing
Thus far I have looked into one-drop zoo and merfolk with one-drop zoo looking like loads of fun. I tested merfolk for a few games and just couldn't get into the tempo playstyle. Although, the tribal part was cool.
Side Note: A deck that could segway into legacy without too many adjustments is preferrable (why I looked into merfolk and zoo).

Hey everybody, I'm looking for a third modern deck, something to play when I get want something different from of my main two. Currently I have a full Blue Tron list and Scapeshift, so as you can see, combo and control are my main areas of proficiency. I think I want something a bit different.
Favorite Playstyle: Combo and control are my main wheelhouses with a heavy lean towards control. I also have a fair amount of experience with tempo strategies (old U/G madness decks and Gro back when they were in standard). Pure aggro is interesting to me, but not really enjoyable to play (not un-fun, just not as much as I feel is possible), and midrange is something I have very litte experience with.
How Competitive: FNMs, maybe an SCG IQ or similar level event when they come close by me, but mostly just to have something to play when I don't want to play Tron or Scapeshift
Favorite Cards/Colors: Blue. If I'm playing something without any blue, it will have black and some other supporting color/s. As for favorite cards, well, Remand and Cryptic Command are amazing, I love all the potential tricks and unorthodox lines you can take with them sometimes. Also, Wurmcoil Engine and Mindsalver in Tron always leave me smiling when they get to do their respective things. Outside of Modern, I really enjoy some Necropotence, reminds me of when I was learning to play, and resolving Doomsday always is a riot.
Budget: I think I have an okay selection of Modern viable cards, so the budget will be up to about $150 or so.
Staples Owned: Again I own full Scapshift and Blue Tron lists, but here's a quick rundown of what I have worth taking the time to mention:
4x Misty Rainforest, 4x Polluted Delta, 4x Steam Vents, 4x Stomping Grounds, 2x Breeding Pool, 1x Flooded Grove, 1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, playset of Tron lands, 4x Electrolyze, 2x Abrupt Decay, 2x Snapcaster Mage, 4x Remand, 4x Cryptic Command, 4x Gitaxian Probe, 4x Lightning Bolt, 1x Batterskull, 2x Wurmcoil Engine, 2x Oblivion Stone, 4x Dismember, 2x Spell Pierce, 3x Spell Snare, and some other assorted main and sideboard cards you'd typically associate with Tron and Scapseshift.
Also, as an aside, this won't be anything I'll be running out to get any missing cards for any specific list just yet, I intend to wait at least until the full Modern Masters 2015 list is at least spoiled before making any decisions.
I'm an older player looking to start playing some occasional Modern as my second format, as one of our local stores has started running weekly events. I'm looking for advice in terms of decks to build. Budget isn't really a concern, since I have a pretty large Legacy collection that contains many crossover staples in addition to a set of shocklands, and I'm actively looking to pick up some Modern-only staples for the decks that I might enjoy. I have a pretty wide range of archetypes I've played across different formats (mostly Legacy), so I don't have any particular preference in terms of strategy or color. One caveat: I will absolutely not buy or trade for Serum Visions, Remand, or Cryptic Command at their current price points, since I think those cards are terrible, so I'd like to avoid decks that would contain them.
I'm looking for something that is competitive, fun, and less likely to be axed by ban updates. The last two considerations are more important than the first (competitive), as I don't anticipate going to any large events such as PTQs and I'm still primarily a Legacy player when stores like Card Kingdom or SCG hold concurrent large events, but it's still nice to be able to do well at my weeklies:
- Pod: My favorite archetype to force in Cube is Pod/Rec-Sur, one of my fondest Standard decks (way back in 1998) was Rec-Sur, and if I played EDH, it would certainly be a Survival/Pod value creature deck. I'd probably eventually play Pod Nic Fit in Legacy at some point, but I understand this is more competitive in Modern. After doing some reading, it sounds like a lot of players moved from Melira combo to Angel combo (or both) to now decks that run neither. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each? Would it cost a lot to shift from one version to another if metagame factors changed or I have a better idea of my personal preferences?
- UR Delver: I get the impression that this is "the best deck" in the format. Because of my personal rule regarding Serum Visions, I was thinking of playing something similar to Logan Mize's list that won the SCG Atlanta 5K. How does this differ from the conventional UR Delver decks in terms of how matchups play out?
- Burn (Rwu): I put together a deck to play in the first Modern weekly I attended at my LGS because I saw two pretty sweet burn lists that did well in a Japanese tournament (facing each other in the finals), and I figured it was a good choice if I could play well technically but didn't have the format knowledge necessary to play a more complicated deck. Since Modern Delver decks don't seem to have any decent countermagic, I was wondering why a player would play Delver over Burn or vice versa? Delver seems to have a little more staying power with more powerful creatures like Delver and Pyromancer with their superior ability to fuel Cruise, but Burn obviously has a little more reach. The Modern variants seem to be similar decks on the continuum of Sligh-like strategies. Any reason to choose one over the other?

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
Burn is kind of boring and has had a pretty difficult time against Pod and Junk with their lifegain. Many decks have also been siding Dragon's Claw, which is pretty brutal to play against.
The best versions of Delver play Visions.
I suggest Pod. It's flexible and powerful. It's been consistently good and has many skill intensive lines of play that reward thinking ahead.

Personally I think Delver is the best deck but you really need Serum Visions and Remand.
I play Pod primarily but have Delver and some other decks put together for friends to use. Pod is probably second best behind Delver but it's a lot less likely to be banned.

I need something with decent Delver MU and that's all. Money, colors, etc. aren't issues.
This has gotta be the most popular topic here...
Bogles, Souls Sisters, and Burn all have decent matchups vs. UR Delver. Others here can probably think of some other decks. Whatever deck you choose, you could always slant the deck toward beating Delver (for example, 8 Lifelink cards instead of 6 in Bogles).

Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): I'm Running infect right now and I love how I can randomly pull out a win against anyone. I killed a burn player from 2 to 10 in one swing at 1 hp. it was the highlight of my playing so far. Made him rage quit the store apparently because no one's seen him since.
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): FNM+. though I'll probably stick to just FNM lots of people build burn, delver, pod, twin, and infect in my area.
Favorite Cards/Colors: I love white and i'm starting to like green. but I HATE counters.
Budget: somewhere around $300 or so.
Staples Owned: 4 Noble Hierarch, 4 Thoughtseize, 4 GW fetches, 4 GR fetches, 4 WB fetches, 4 voice of resurgence, 4 birthing pods, 3 siege Rhino.
See my advice above. Build Pod. You have the majority of the expensive cards for it and everything else is pretty cheap. It's the most competitive and flexible GWx deck currently out there right now, as Hatebears just isn't cutting it these days.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): Anything but Aggro
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): MTGO
Favorite Cards/Colors: All of them
Budget: 100-150$
Staples Owned: Remand, Gitaxian Probe, Temple Garden.
I'd play Delver, except that I'm worried about Treasure Cruise getting banned and the deck being bad. I'd play Pod, but I don't want to spend 300+. What should I play?
Should I play UR Delver with Goyf, or Scapeshift? Planning to build a second consistent Modern deck for meta game battles.
For Scapeshift I own 4 Misty, 1 Cryptic, 2 Snapcaster, some shocks, no scapeshift, I will probably finish the deck if I can just trade with some cards.
...... I think the UR delver with Goyf is too risky to start building it, since Treature might get hit or Goyf will be at MM2.

Both are definitely good although as you said Delvers future is uncertain.
Anyway I would say that you should go for the deck with the play style that you enjoy more.
Scapeshift is a bit on the slower side and plays a reactive game until it can combo off.
Delver on the other hand is very fast and aggressive.
Hey guys! So I've just returned to MTG, and I'm slowly looking to get into modern. I last played when Snapcaster Mage and Birthing Pod were around in Standard (can't really remember when that was), so I have a lot of cards from that era and before til when I started in Lorwyn. Obviously I'm going to have to buy cards from before that, but I'm wondering whether you guys can point me in the direction of some good decks that use a lot of cards from that period so that I can get on my feet more quickly!
Cheers!
PS: I'm not completely "budget", but if any decks avoid having to buy Goyf or other $250 cards... I'd appreciate it.
You could make a Pod deck but there is talking about pod becoming banned but i would not worry about that.
A good idea would be affinity or twin decks they are both reasonably cheap deck for there power and twin just combos so fast
For affinity http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/proven-modern/219590-affinity
I mean Goyf when it says goof my computer thinks that it is smarter than me.
I would also recommend delver it plays no card over 60 dollars and all that money goes to fetch lands like tarn and strand.
Sorry for the double post it would not let me edit anymore.

Hey mate, appreciate the ideas! I'll definitely check them out. Delver sounds attractive, as I used to play Delver in standard and still have Snappies (which I'll assume are still a great card for Delver decks). Any threads for Delver you suggest I check out? I also used to play Pod, so curious to see what those decks look like in modern too. I'm envisaging Mulldrifter. Is there Mulldrifter?
Sorry to tell you that mulldriftewr really does not have a place in modern it is just too slow and does not win the game. Right now delver decks are a tier 1 deck but they only play 1-2 snap caster mages do to the new delve cards like dig through time and treasure cruise these have changed the game a lot and allows a ton of draw and that is the reason why delver become popular recently. But Delver is a great deck i play UR delver right now it is very consistent and contains lost of staples
Pod i have not played in a long time, people are no longer playing the finks/redcap combos with merila or however it is spelled. They are only playing pod to increase there board state and it is a very very powerful midrange choice in modern it is also one of the top decks it is very good but it requires a lot of piloting and practice against real players to get good at pod. Pod deck only contain fetch lands and noble hierarch as staples and hierarch is a 60-75 dollar card and most list play 2-3 otherwise it plays a bunch of random creatures.
Here is the primer- I would recommend the ABZAN variant because it does not combo out.
Also for all of you MTG metagame needs and deck list check out both of these.
for metagame and recent finishes and scores check out this site. It also tells you the price of each deck. I recommend this one it is easy to use and very helpful http://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/modern#paper
for your pro decks that pros use that are a bit different than you FNM or PTQ environment. You can see what versions of the decks they play if you have a favorite player.
Favorite Playstyle: Combo and Control don't like generic aggro unless it has tricks to it(D+T, Pod, etc.)
How Competitive: FNM, PTQ, anything
Favorite Cards/Colors:: Black(thoughtseize, ichorid, griselbrand, ccabal therapy, smallpox), Green(goyf, nimble mongoose, primeval titan) red(bolt)
Favorite deck:: Dredge( i have literally played it in every incarnation at some point from standard, extended friggorid, to legacy and vintage)
Budget: 300-400 at most
Staples Owned: Notta
Looking at trap ramp, Bloom Titan, living end(running bloodstained mire instead of verdant catacombs)
I think all of those decks that you suggested would be fun. You may also want to look at a potential GB Loam Pox list. I think there is one on tcgplayer.com by Rafael Levy right now.

Favorite Playstyle: Midrange
How Competitive: Local Tournament and want PTQ
Favorite Cards/Colors: Black-White-Red-Blue-Green by this ordern, favorite its black/white // cards i love dark confidant, thougseize, goblin guide, remand ...
Budget: 300-400€
Staples Owned: All shocks and fetchlands (khans), all staples in my 6 decks also, has a lot of things for wur control and melira pod decks...
i like very much BW Midrange "deadguy ale" deck i have all the deck but dark confidant and lilianas because are expensives ... and the deck its not very competitive at all
i would like play WUR Control and all the cards can be good pool for others deck but melira could be very cheap to me due to get the cards
im thinkin in one of these 3 decks WUR Control, Affinity, Melira Pod, Which its best and why?

Honestly you can do well with any of those decks. However, Pod has had some concrete tournament results as of lately, so it's probably your best bet once you have practiced a bunch and mastered it. For an easy lesson, I would trust Jacob Wilson from channelfireball.com and his Sideboarding guide from the recent article.
To answer your question better, Angel Pod or just Junk Pod without a combo has answers to many of the decks in the format. There is not a matchup that you will face with regularity that is worse than 45% to win, other than Tron if you run into it.

I suggest Pod. It's flexible and powerful. It's been consistently good and has many skill intensive lines of play that reward thinking ahead.

Personally I think Delver is the best deck but you really need Serum Visions and Remand.
I play Pod primarily but have Delver and some other decks put together for friends to use. Pod is probably second best behind Delver but it's a lot less likely to be banned.

For Scapeshift I own 4 Misty, 1 Cryptic, 2 Snapcaster, some shocks, no scapeshift, I will probably finish the deck if I can just trade with some cards.
...... I think the UR delver with Goyf is too risky to start building it, since Treature might get hit or Goyf will be at MM2.
EDH: Xenagos, God of Revels.
Cheers!
PS: I'm not completely "budget", but if any decks avoid having to buy Goyf or other $250 cards... I'd appreciate it.
A good idea would be affinity or twin decks they are both reasonably cheap deck for there power and twin just combos so fast
For affinity http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/proven-modern/219590-affinity
For twin http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/proven-modern/219751-ur-and-rug-twin
They are both great decks but i would personally go twin because it is just so strong and has so many staples if you choose to play with goofs.
But affinity has always been good and has a very low chance of key cards from getting banned because they already took the broken stuff away.

I would also recommend delver it plays no card over 60 dollars and all that money goes to fetch lands like tarn and strand.

here is the primer

I recommend this one it is easy to use and very helpful

for your pro decks that pros use that are a bit different than you FNM or PTQ environment. You can see what versions of the decks they play if you have a favorite player.

To answer your question better, Angel Pod or just Junk Pod without a combo has answers to many of the decks in the format. There is not a matchup that you will face with regularity that is worse than 45% to win, other than Tron if you run into it.
