So I've been brainstorming some new deck ideas and a card I instantly loved for pauper was Squadron Hawk. Obviously 2 casting cost for a flyer and 3 more in your hand is good even in powerful formats, so in pauper it should wreck. Except here we have no "Sword of X and Y." But we do have a legitmately powerful Power buff artifact. Bonesplitter. I run this as a one of in my Delver blue deck and love it, especially in decks full of fliers. *ahem, cawblade*
Now how can we readily fetch our super axe of doom? Trinket Mage comes to mind. He can also fetch a great number of things, including the artifact lands!
It would be cool to blink him and fetch the whole set relatively fast right? So how about Cloudshift? and if you're feeling freaky, ghostly flicker. It's nice to "counter" removal while also gaining value with ETB triggers.
But wait there's more! Know what else goes great with Blinking? (And Bonesplitter!) Mulldrifter, otherwise know as Happyfish. 2/2 flyer, plus TWO cards, that weilds an axe awesomely, that has this sexy evoke ability that can be abused with cloudshift? Sounds like exactly what I want! Evoke Mulldrifter + Cloudshift= 2/2 flyer and 4 new cards off the top. Damn.
This is about as far as I got. The rest of the deck is really open.
If we want to abuse evoke, Aethersnipe can be abused with cloudshift too. It's a 4/4 + 2 Bounced permanents for 4 if you have the cards. Could clear the way to let your team get in, however it's kind of risky. And doesn't work well with a third color.
Faeries seems nice. Cloud of faeries, spellstutter sprite, and pestermiteall ave synergy together, being blinked, and Bonesplitter. Could run a aether spellbomb to help bounce dudes, replay for value, and be fetchable with trinket mage.
Bringing cloud of faeries in with Ghostly flicker is already two pieces to the infinite mana combo with mnemonic wall. (Just use the Azourious bounce lands.) So do with that as you will.
Splashing Red adds some great removal in the form of lightning bolt, flash slash, and burst lightning (since the deck might not mind going to the late game. But adding a third color might not seem as powerful as a devoted two color.)
Here's a list of cards I feel could be put in the deck, without lengthy explanations.
And of course since we are running blue we can round out extra slots for countermagic and draw filters.
I feel this deck could really be something, and I haven't seen any other cawblade variants yet. Any ideas or Input? Looking to maybe putting something like this together
Using Squadron Hawk and Bonesplitter is powerful in Pauper for sure. There is in fact a Cawblade variant in Pauper that has had some success. It is called Paublade, and a decklist can be found here: http://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/7954. It does indeed use Trinket Mage as a toolbox, as well as Mulldrifter. However, it uses counterspells and removal instead of the blink mechanics you listed. Perhaps your faerie variant could work, though I'd be wary of splashing red due to difficult color fixing at common rarity.
Thanks for that. Now I have a mold in which I can move things around and crunch some numbers. I had no idea Cawblade was in pauper which surprised me a lot. I think I will devote to the blink + evoke mechanic a bit for originality.
An evoked Aethersnipe with cloudshift is a huge tempo swing. And a evoked mulldrifter with cloudshift is 5 cards for 2. That seems really powerful. Aethersnipe could even directly replace guardian of the guildpact in the list you provided as they could both function as finishers. Except guardian has the built in resistances. Thanks for the input you'vegiven me quite a bit to work with
P.S Red was just an idea if the deck lacked something, but you are right, sticking to a more solid mana base will be much more useful.
I'm the pilot behind the two finishes that made this a "deck" on MTGOGoldfish. I stopped playing it however (and Pauper in general), as I felt the deck simply wasn't powerful enough.
I played it quite a bit before Cloudpost got banned (you can probably find some older decklists if you search enough), so I've tried quite a few cards and configurations.
If you're trying to make a fun deck to play in tournament practice, you should go ahead and do whatever you like.
If you want to play an unique deck, while still winning a decent amount of Tournament-matches, I would reccomend comitting to either the Blink-strategy, or the Hawk/Mage-strategy. While the latter two cards certainly reap benefits when blinked, there's a clear limit to how much time you have to durdle and cards you can fit in your deck. Just try to make a quick decklist and see how many cards you end up with that meaningfully interact turn 1 to 3, with Mono White, Mono Green and the various combo-decks.
I'll pop by the thread again if you have any questions on what cards I found to work, or big disagreements with the above. Good luck with the deck either way, I really do miss the feeling of Brainstorming away two Hawks.
I've argued with people over the number of cards in a deck many times, and I feel that having a high number of "good cards" is better than having a small number of "really good" cards. I laugh at the people who argue that with a smaller deck you're more likely to draw what you need, because if you get in that situation you're gonna NOT end up drawing it many many more times than you would.
Brainstorm is good in a deck with squadron hawks and trinket mage. Those cards add enough shuffle effects to make it good, I think. I like a one or two Makeshift Mauler since a 4/5 is the biggest creature in the format, and it doesn't die to galvanic blast.

Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.

I think this deck would like to focus on weenies rather than bigger finishers.
Thinking about adding serrated arrows. With ghostly flicker in the deck, it could easily end up adding 5-6 -1/-1 counters when it flickers and resets.
Well, 4 mana isn't really a 'big' finisher. It's just a card I think is well positioned in the metagame right now, even though it doesn't have much synergy with the blink thing. I've been trying out a list with hawks, brainstorm, trinket mage, and bonesplitter for a while. It's just too difficult to try to build a card advantage deck that can still beat big mana decks like RUG tron. Makeshift mauler was strong there because he can't be bolted or flame slash'ed. It wasn't good enough though, I would eventually just lose to ghostly flicker, a capsize lock, or an enormous fireball.

A thing I used to see people do with this deck is Deft Duelist. Can't be axed, but very hard to kill, especially in multiples. (Double block = kill your Myr Enforcer for free)

Oh, you think the losers' bracket is your ally, but you merely adopted the scrub tier. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn’t 4-0 an FNM until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but an extra pack to sell for store credit!
A thing I used to see people do with this deck is Deft Duelist. Can't be axed, but very hard to kill, especially in multiples. (Double block = kill your Myr Enforcer for free)
Not working with axe or blink is basically all this needs to not be run IMO. Good for blocking in multiples, but offensively anything that blocks it with 3 or more toughness kills it. I'd rather run porcelain legionnaire in that spot because it can hold an axe, can be blinked to survive spot removal, and wrecks on offense and defense, even more so with an axe.
Actually put together the deck with a few proxies for the few cards I was missing.
The deck functions very very resiliently. It lacks a bit of speed which could be bad in a number or match-ups, but I believe it's mid to late game are outstanding.
Pros: Evoked Aethersnipe/Mulldrifter + cloudshift = Huge card advantage or a cleared field on your opponent's side while you netted a 4/4 body.
Aggressive in the sky.
Can create a quick clock out of nowhere.
Cons: Minimal countermagic. Hard to deal with big flyers without 2+ bonersplitters. Lacking removal. Land count not quite fixed yet, prone to flooding.
Needs more testing to see what can be done about the speed of the deck and the lack of removal. May possibly tweak the numbers a bit, 4 Trinket mages seems excessive. Two may be the magic number for Aethersnipe. Snap may be a four of in the deck...
Wow, I was about to post this decklist when I spotted your post! How appropriate.
2 Guardian of the Guildpact
3 Trinket Mage
4 Squadron Hawk
4 Rune Snag
3 Snap
3 Journey to Nowhere
1 Lotus Petal
1 Bonesplitter
3 Cloudshift
2 Mulldrifter
3 Aven Riftwatcher
1 Ancient Den

4 Brainstorm
2 Terramorphic Expanse
1 Leonin Bola
1 Shield Sphere
1 AEther Spellbomb
SB: 1 Library of Leng
SB: 2 Court Homunculus
SB: 2 Dispeller's Capsule
SB: 1 Relic of Progenitus
SB: 1 Viridian Longbow
SB: 3 Standard Bearer
SB: 4 Steel Sabotage
SB: 1 Journey to Nowhere
That's my UW blink control deck. I set out to build a deck around synergies found between cloudshift and ETB creatures like trinket mage, aven riftwatcher and evokers like mulldrifter. Later, I decided to toss in a playset of 4 Squadron Hawk to thin the deck. It was at this point I realized how many shuffle effects I had to unlock brainburst...
The strategy is to control early game with rune snags, journey to nowhere and snap. Then turn 4 or so start to rely on the synergy between brainstorm, squadron hawk and trinket mage to keep my hand full and tempo up.
I would normally use far less 3 and 2-ofs but thanks to the thinning and toolbox effects of hawks and trinkets, I needed to retain the utility of a variety of cards.
Could use some help on the sideboard - I found auras to be a tough matchup and added the flagbearers.

You're pushing a more controlling build, which I find to be fine, maybe even better but I haven't tested it yet. However in the control build I feel you definitely want the aethersnipes. They are such a huge tempo swing when you evoke and blink them. Not to mention a 4/4 is a huge plus. I might suggest finding room for a second bonesplitter as they are just too strong on our hawks. I love the rune snags. I wish I had a playset lol. However my 4 Counterspells work great for me. Each is better in it's own way. Suprised to see a blink deck running only 3 cloudshifts. I run the full set AND 4 ghostly flickers. I know 8 is way to many but I'm still working the kinks.
How has Journey to Nowhere done as your removal? Is there a reason you don't play O-ring? A control build seems like it wouldn't mind the extra mana to gain access to targeting anything.
--------------
About the hexproof match-up I would definitely bring in a suitable number of celestial flares. That's what I board in against Modern Boogles and it's basically GG for them. I'm not sure how much different it wouldbe in pauper but it would be my go-to SB choice. Plus it has uses against Ulamog's crusher in tron, and Atog against affinity.

I like aethersnipe too. In fact I tested it in a more dedicated blink deck with titanic bulvox and the whole suite of UW blink spells. The one time I was able to evoke/blink it into play I didn't have enough effective targets and had to bounce one of my guys to my disadvantage. That being said, his potential power is clear.
I decided to shy away from a blink heavy strategy and focus more on the synergy between trinkets, hawks and brainstorms.
I tested my build against what turned out to be a UB blink build. I got smashed both games by rats and trinket mages being recurred with grim harvest and undying evil. It got me down on the archetype of UW blink altogether until I realized that I was essentially playing a mirror match heavily stacked in my opponent's favor.
Moving forward, I would like to test more blink synergies in the deck as opposed to pure control. Additionally, I dug up the following article on this deck type and found many useful insights and card choices. Check it out and let me know how your testing goes!
Ah, and I like journey over o-ring because it fits better in the curve. I felt like I had better things to be doing on turn 3 vs aggro than casting the ring, like casting a mage and playing a tutored shield sphere.

I personally don't care for that list in all honesty o.o
It looks far worse than either of our lists. Much more clunky with janky cards.
I believe your deck could go leaning more on control and still be great.
Have you considered applying the infinite mana combo? cloud of faeires, mnemonic wall , and Ghostly Flicker? Blinking Azorious chancery(s). I know that's a big change, but it's an infinite loop no matter what lol.
One other weakness I've found is my deck is getting stuffed because of the decks mentality. Since I want to be proactive with my creatures and blinking that gives my opponent the chance to response and 2 for 1 me. A LOT. I'm always eager to evoke a mulldrifter or Aethersnipe and cloudshift it to get maximum value, but instead the mulldrifter gets bolted in response to the cloudshift or the cloudshift gets dazed, and I lose my Creature because of evoke. It's a puzzle that's leaving me scratching my head.
One last thought, I wanted to try adding serrated arrows to as my removal of choice for a bit. My main reason is the synergy with ghostly flicker. Once I've used all the counters I can blink it (and another creature) to reset the counters on it; meaning one serrated arrows could end up placing 6 -1/-1 counters and killing 3-4 dudes. Seems worth exploring.
my 50 cents: dont overload on card advantage, cards are nice but you also need efficient ways to spend them: if you run squadron hawks and trinket mages you probably won't need a lot more of CA. alternatively, you can skip the hawks and play a blink deck with trinket mage. also, don't use counterspells if you want to tap out, you're playing blue but for the cards, try to be jund-style
