Quite true. Players understood the power of blue in this block format and played it, in force.
In fact, even Wescoe was running a blue card.

Ok after seeing his list, I'm not a big fan of castellon's deck.
24 lands with 8 guildgates? I understand that he get's them with gatecreeper vine, and that this was a meta full of control, but he should have just done 5-6 max. Especially when you notice that he's not playing playsets of stomping ground, godless shrine, or sacred foundry, yet he has guildgates of those colors.
I'm pretty surprised he's not playing putrefy, surely it's better than abrupt decay.
And I could have sworn I saw reckoners in the sideboard during the deck-tech, but I guess not. I'm surprised they aren't in the 75 in some capacity, even as just 2-3 in the board for aggro matchups.
It's still an intresting deck, but I'm not super impressed by it.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring

He has those 1 of guildgates so he can fetch them with the gatecreeper. And he has 3 selesnya guild gates so he can cast voice on turn 2. And he also has maze's end in the sideboard. Which seems pretty low impact, but maybe that works when you bring in 4 slaughter games.
He didn't test with a super team, so I bet the mana base can be improved. I think it makes sense by looking at it, playing with it on the other hand, haven't tried it out yet.
I'm pretty surprised he's not playing putrefy, surely it's better than abrupt decay.
Putrefy costs 3 mana. Abrupt decay can kill small creatures. Selesnya can kill big creatures. And he has some big ground guys that can stop creatures decay and selesnya charm can't hit. Plus selesnya charm has other modes. I'm sure playing the cheaper spells was a concession to aggro.

I don't have any Blood Baron's yet, so I'm playing Obzedat instead. I put Pithing Needles in the board to deal with the Maze's end deck and also use them to turn off Aetherling in the mirror (which I side out myself in favor Luminate Primordial's.
I'm hesitant to buy blood barons since they're not used in standard, so their price is currently inflated online (plus the MOCS prelims just happened). But Blood Baron is better than I thought it was. It is easier to cast than obzedat, which is something I overlooked. I don't think they're going to drop in price for a while so i'm just going to bite the bullet and get a playset.
I'd use Angels, but they can't deal with Blood Baron and Luminate simply kills it). It's been working really good so far, because people stopped playing Detention Sphere for some reason.
Is luminate's trigger not considered white when dealing with Blood Baron?
Well I played against someone running rob's deck.
It was pretty nuts. Honestly I think they guy got lucky to pull off what he did though.
He was hard casting creatures on a curve and I was one for oneing them until he played a bloodbaron and i wiped it and a deadbridge with gaze of granite a few turns later. Then he played deadbridge chant. He got back the baron twice, he got sire of insanity, and just kept getting creatures back. It was rediculous, i don't think he ever got anything besides a creature from deadbridge chant.
But i finished him off with aetherling before he could kill me.
Still Deadbridge chant is insane in a creature deck. I actually ended up with 3 aetherlings on the field one game because of my chant. It was pretty awsome.
I'm using it as a card advantage engine in a bug control deck, it's working out very well, but it's unreal with a lot of creatures.
I was thinking, maybe obzedat's aid would fit in rob's deck? maybe taking the place of the alms beast. If you play Deadbridge chant, it might as well say "Put target non-land permanent from your library on the battlefield".

I'm loving this top 8. I don't think you would have seen this kind of player variety if the format was standard or something more established than block with a new set.
You have soon to be crowned POTY, 3-4 guys with 100+ lifetime pro points and two guys who have never played in a PT before, one of which went the distance with a very rogue list.

LP, I'm checking your article out as well. Behind all of your swag is the brain of one of the most intelligent Magic players I've ever known. I guess that's one more thing for you to add to the wall of ego that is your Sally sig.
I can go with that. LK, you are the Mace Windu of red mages...cool, tempered logic in deliberation, but capable of just flat kicking tail when the situation warrants it.
Hate to say it, but I'm really rooting for aggro today. (Sorry to see Castellon go though).

Wescoes deck is genius, I couldn't have been more wrong re aggro on the top 8. Not only were there two aggro decks there, but his is clearly better than mono red. And not only is it more solid all round, it crushes mono red which is great for the modo meta. until you play it you might not appreciate how good the deck is. Keeping the curve low is the key to breaking rootborn defences, which is an amazing card.
Hope he wins, but either way that is the best top8 list for modo.
Well, looks like Wescoe was able to pull through to the Finals...
Sweep for GW. Nice to hear LSV in the booth talking about how he could have evolved twice and swung for the win even w/out the Wurm.

Only if format allows to be successful with blue deck. At PT Mirrodin besieged 1/3 of the field was robots and other 1/3 monored antirobots.

And congrats to Mr. Wescoe, who played well, had a good deck, and earned his PT win.
