Today I started a solitaire game in the V4 client to test things, then went away from the computer for an hour with the window open. When I came back, the window was frozen and hitting F2 did nothing but make a noise. Then I realized my entire computer was frozen. The mouse cursor would move but I couldn't click anything on my taskbar, or the start menu. Then I tried control+alt+delete to get to the task manager and kill the MTGO process. This blackscreened my computer, and I had to physically restart it.
I have a nice modern computer with an i5-4670, a Radeon HD 7870, and 16 gigs of RAM. It can run basically anything. I also have Malwarebytes installed and run it frequently.
People, we have to speak up. This isn't acceptable. Not only does the client have a terrible UI and no text scaling options, it will crash your computer during a tournament or a draft. Don't let them force us to use this pile of garbage.
I have merged several threads together. This is now the official complain/whine thread. Keep it civil please. t_c
I used the new client for matches for the first time today. It crashed during my first match -- catastrophic, had to hard restart. It crashed during my second match -- catastrophic, had to hard restart. After the 2nd crash, I can't even get the client to load anymore. I'm getting an error that says "Main Navigation Has Stopped Working." No known solution that I can find. Some people solved this by uninstalling a driver for a particular tablet. I don't even own a tablet. (EDIT: I've since fixed it by manually uninstalling MTGO. The uninstaller does nothing. This still doesn't address the crash issue but we can add "an uninstaller that doesn't delete anything" to the list of gripes.)
I'm playing on a custom built computer with an i5 2550K, Radeon HD 7850, and 8GB RAM. I play Skyrim with about 300 mods on this computer! Literally nothing but MTGO has ever caused this computer to crash catastrophically in over 2 years of hard gaming.
The old client worked fine! They've replaced it with trash.

Excuse me? Are you calling me a liar? How about you get the hell out of this thread.
You're way out of line dude. "It will freeze your computer" is completely inaccurate. I've played this for months on a >5 year old PC, and it has never crashed or frozen.
These things are not certain occurrences, they must be compatibility problems, because lots of players never experience them. They still need correction, but there's a huge difference between compatibility problems and software that simply doesn't work.
I am having problems with V4 crashing every time I click on something in my collection. V4 is a work in progress. V3 had its problems when it first came out.
Keep in mind that we need to be civil and not hostile in our discussions here. Disagreement is fine, but do not attack or purposely try to make the other side uncomfortable.
How about a little common sense in understanding that the new client is neither:
A) Perfect in every way
B) Crashing literally every computer
There's plenty of room in between and no reason to argue. Just share your experiences without generalizing.
I still haven't finished a round of MTG on the new client without a crash, the sample size is only 2 rounds and I will try again, but there are a lot more problems here than simple "compatibility" issues. People with modern, properly maintained PCs are experiencing repeated catastrophic crashes. That should never happen with release software. This is very much a Beta that's been forced on us as a finished product, mostly because the programmers don't seem competent enough to deliver a polished product without utilizing the entire player base as their Even Wider Beta testers.
People have been complaining about memory leak problems with this client for months, maybe even more than a year. These are major, unaddressed issues in release software. That's not OK.
My only hope is that now that V3 is shut down, everyone who worked on maintaining that can switch gears and start helping with the new client. They really need to move quickly though because the M15 release is looming, and if the client continues to behave this way through a major release where they're giving away free Sealed entry...it's going to be a disaster.
V4 client has massive memory leaks. If you have a high end system it will use up resources. I already actually burned out 1 graphics card this way. I left the client on a collection page displaying foils, and forgot. Came back to fatal errors and a toasted graphics card. I don't have AC it only gets hot for like 4 days a year to need AC. Magic wasn't previously a game I didn't play on hot days.
I tried to get a screenshot of the V4 client consuming 12 Gigs of RAM, but that was the straw that crashed my computer.
AMD Phenom II Black (Hexcore processor) 16 Gigs of RAM and a new mid-range graphics card (my formerly high end card burned up).
Could this be an issue only with Radeon cards? Phyrres has a Radeon and I'm assuming that if you bought a AMD processor (even though Intel usually are better) then you must be an AMD supporter and have an AMD GPU.
(I also have an AMD GPU: Radeon HD5770 and HD6850 in two different computers. I
ll post here if it works for me.)
I'd offer to test it by switching off my Radeon, but I got the processor without the integrated GPU. Good catch on that though, maybe it is a Radeon issue. Good news is that AMD is pretty good about releasing new drivers when a problem is identified, if we can actually identify it as such and make enough noise.
Wizards should be paying us for all this troubleshooting and bug investigating...shouldn't have to be this way, if their product wasn't gaming crack they'd be out of business by now.
I kept one deck online along with my Theros block cards and my JOU packs. I have a perverse hope that the turn V3 back on some day, even if just for a weekend.
I'm thinking MH17 crashed when the pilot tried playing MTGO on V4.

LOL
Incidentally, the new "foils" are a complete joke. The effect is nearly impossible to see on full-art cards and half of the cards with the old frames (red, black, artifacts). How was this in beta for a year and ended up going live this way?
The old client was a joke. Looked like something from 1997. You just have to get used to the new client.
I will say I'm irritated the new client doesn't have the starting handicap feature, but I'm not going to quit playing because of it. I've been using the V4 client for months and it works just fine.

No, it does not "work just fine." Do you play multiplayer? Are you aware of what a nightmare it is to try to find a game when games with open seats cannot be viewed at all? The casual matchmaking process being completely automated and not transparent is a horrible idea, and it may cause multiplayer to almost completely die out. That is just one example of how the new client critically fails at basic functionality.
Your criticism that the old client "looks like something from 1997" is facile. The old client was functional, and its UI was clean and easy to read during a match. It also presented cards in their correct aspect ratio, with a good font and no stretched-out art. Please do not white knight for the new client. It is bad.
Oh and here's another one. I attack with a creature with Sword of Fire and Ice equipped, and its trigger goes off. This trigger pops up in a GIGANTIC WINDOW that covers almost all of my opponent's side of the screen. Now I need to move this bigass stupid window out of the way so I can click on the trigger and then click on something for it to target.
This is a miserable failure at UI programming. This should have been spotted during the first month of beta, and quickly corrected. And yet the client has gone live with this nonsense, after over a year. It's not acceptable.
sorry, what starting handicap? Are you referring to getting 7 cards instead of 8?
In the V3 client, you had the option to adjust starting handicaps. You could play 40 life and 10 starting cards for example. Having 40+ life for 2HG or free for alls while playing vintage was ideal.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. I've played both clients extensively and I prefer V4. My personal opinion is that it is a cleaner, more modern, and much more efficient client. I enjoy creating decks and playing much more on V4.
Again, the only thing I'd like to add is starting handicaps.
I wish people would give the new client a real chance before turning to the interwebs to gripe and moan about the V4 experience. If you give it a shot you'll probably get used to it and still enjoy it.

Can you read? Did you seriously just ignore the entire content of my post in regards to multiplayer? How about the post I made underneath that one?
How about the fact that the client just completely froze Windows and then blackscreened my computer AGAIN, in the course of playing a regular casual match? Fantastic!
