I'm upset because I just punted a Limited game where I accidentally targeted my opponent's creature with a Necrobite, but it got me wondering -- why can't MTGO be just a little smarter?
Like if 99.9% of Necrobites are played on creatures controlled by the caster, why not program a pop-up that says "Are you sure you want to target your opponent's creature with Necrobite?"
I get why there can't be an Undo button for spells because your opponent has to get priority. It just seems like a major short-coming because mistakes like that would never ever in a million years happen with real cards.

Because that would be incredibly annoying in the long run considering the cases where you want to target say your own creature with a path to exile to get a land. This isn't the clients shortcoming (of which there are many) but yours.

Because it's not a top-priority feature. It has nothing to do with annoyance since the case where a card is played 'against the norm' are rare so one more click would not kill you.

I would not want to be asked an "are you sure" question. There are a whole lot of clicks already in the game, slowing things down, although I see the need for the clicks there now but an "are you sure" extra click is not something I would want. I would be fine if it was an option to be prompted yes/no for some things, as long as I could turn off that option.
They try to take a minimalistic approach to it to quicken and smooth gameplay. Everyone makes some mistakes at first, but most people get the hang of it. I highly suggest playing some casual multiplayer games just to warm up if you are new to the client. Putting yourself in a position where there are packs on the line immediately is not always the right call.
There are Magic games on Steam and game consoles that do this kind of "helping hand" interface, so transitioning from this to mtgo may be hard.
Oh, and if you targeted your enemy's creature with Necrobite in paper, it would still punt your game. Just sayin.' They wouldn't have to let you take it back.
This is why I always click spells and targets first before tapping mana. You can always hit that lovely "Cancel" button while you're still tapping your mana.
Of all MTGO's failings, this isn't one IMO. Even little things like this can distinguish one player from a lesser one. I find this in competitive paper Magic too, if you can't stay alert and spot potential mistakes before you make them then bad luck, you're probably gonna lose.
