I have an MTGO account, I haven't logged into for like 5 months since I got it. However I was curious since I am kinda without a playgroup at the moment, and I was wondering how much would it cost to get a lot modern and legacy staples?
I can't speak for the Legacy stuff since I don't collect or play Legacy, but the Modern staples are generally about 30% or so less than paper as a general rule. Where you will really save money on MTGO though is the more fringe rares that see play occasionally main deck or sideboard are usually much much cheaper than paper. The fetches also are as much as 50% less so that is a huge savings alone for your mana base.

Err, that's still a lot not sure if I want to spend that kind of money for digital cards.
Don't let the digital nature throw you. They are real cards. You can play with them (in fact you'll likely play with them exponentially more than you will your paper cards), and you will be able to sell them (you need to know how the MTGO economy works, though). I mean it is too much money to just casually buy in to kill some time (just as it would be too much money to buy into paper Modern just to play a couple games with your buddies). But if you're serious about Magic, buying into MTGO is a pretty good idea. Your skill level is going to jump through the roof, as the quality of play tends to be a lot higher and you can just jam so many more games.
If you don't like the idea of digital cards, consider that a lot of bot chains buy collections.
As for legacy, a few cards are more expensive (FoW and LED) but most are cheaper, some very significantly so (Candelabra of Tawnos is <$10 online versus ~$350 in paper).

No different to spending the money on pretty pieces of cardboard in paper Magic.
On the original question: A thousand dollars will buy almost any Modern deck, $300-400 if you are willing to make sacrifices for budget concerns (e.g. dropping Tarmogoyf, Clique or other super-high priced cards).
Legacy costs more, and it's not the cards you expect due to very different supply/demand dynamics on MTGO than in paper. Rishadan Port, for instance, is in extreme short supply on MTGO, while Tabernacle at Pendell Vale is not. As such Tabernacle is by far the cheaper of the two cards despite probably seeing more play.
Honestly despite all the technical bugs, MTGO is great value for those of us that don't have the money for paper or even the time to drive/commute our way to the LGS. Try and think of it that way.
