My 7-year-old plays Pokemon (in addition to Magic of course) and yesterday we tried out the online version of the Pokemon card game.
It was pretty sweet! You get codes with packs and decks and then you can enter these to get online versions of the same packs and decks.
I'm just mentioning this here because this was a really great way to make the transition to online play. You already have a decks and some cards to play with without feeling like you have to start your whole collection from scratch.
Wizards should really think about utilizing the code system they implemented with something like this!
The code system sucks for Pokemon because its the ONLY way to get cards in that game. You have to buy real packs/decks or buy the codes from somebody, then either open packs til you get what you need or trade with other humans unopened packs to get what you need (which takes forever to do). There isnt any alternatives to getting cards outside of the Daily Rewards which are pretty poor since you not only cant trade what the game gives you, but you may never get anything that you need/want. MTGO is better at obtaining cards due to event tickets and bots which Pokemon Online completely lacks.
If there was codes in addition to being able to buy singles/packs/event tickets, that would be cool, but I doubt Wizards would want to hand out free money since MTGO cards are basically real cash unlike Pokemon since in Pokemon they do not allow you to sell your cards nor is there a redemption system. They already do the MOCS promos along with the other promos they give out, and now when you get a new account, you do get 200 or so free cards along with the new player tickets giving you stuff. Maybe in future DOTP games they could include promos with it or something or have GP Promo codes, but I wouldnt expect anything like Pokemon Online to ever happen.

A comic about the world's most addictive game, Magic: The Gathering.
