1v1 Commander has similar issues, though the games with descriptions like "40 life, 10 cards, no combo, eldrazi, discard, ld, counters, elves, badgers, etc." make me chuckle.

I think the problem is that some people assume 1v1 Commander mean that you are going by the French ban list, which is wrong. I make all my decks with the RC banlist regardless of how I intend to play it, and if someone want 1v1 with the French list they can put it in the game description.
I take screen shots of comments. I don't have them in front of me, but here are a few:
"Mind Twist. Broken card. Welcome to my banlist" (player starts another game and AFKs this game)
Turn 1 Duress - player quits
Turn 1 Thoughtseize - player quits
Turn 3 opponent casts bribery targeting me: gets Terastodon and targets my 3 lands. I float 3 mana and let it destryy them. I then cast sunder. On my turn, I play homeward path - instant concede.
Plays Humility - "r-tard" player quits
Long game with both players using constant removal: "yawn, this game is boring"
"you took longer than 5 seconds to tutor" player quits
"too many counter spells. only f-tards use counters"
(I destory a Karoo/bounce land with strip mine) - the responses are 'LD is g-y' 'honorless people destroy lands' - insert various 'you dont know how to play magic if you are destroying lands'
Edit: lots of people quit at the sight of money cards (as in FoW, mana drain, Karn, etc).
More than 75% of the games I have been, there is not a single hello/welcome or gg (The last comments of nights playing an hour each night, I have received roughly 2-3 out of 10+ games).
Also, so many people will not concede...they will just start another game (you can tell because their names becomes Red in chat)
Aside from the tera/brib bit I've been in your shoes for the other examples. The only thing I'd add is I've gotten a TON of variants on this theme: "If you want to play by yourself, I'll just quit". I basically play commander/legacy/pris and goldfishing and dropping bombs is by far my favorite form of magic, having said that, I've been playing for twenty years and I'm FAST. Like, very fast. I know my decks, I know what's on the board, and I'm rarely if ever behind in time. So, it basically all comes down to complaining about money cards or anything that upsets their decks little aggro narrative. I know the word 'fun' is subjective, but for the record my view is this: I will always act politely, GL! in, GG! out, and I will play whatever damn deck I choose. I wish there were people in the getting serious/tourney practice rooms for commander/legacy/pris, but there is not, and it's not my responsibility to make sure YOU have fun. I really, really enjoy playing the cards I've collected/traded(y'know, when trading happened)/bought, and if sometimes that means you get buzzsawed by strip/cruci, or mindtwisted, or countered into oblivion and boardwiped, well, that's just magic. I don't complain when it happens to me, I just know that when you have powerful cards sometimes somebody might get wrecked. So, yeah. /endrant
Let's put it this way: Not everyone likes to play Magic at the same level of competition as you do.
If someone is abusive, you report them. No exceptions, no questions.
I don't allow players to be abusive to each other while I am Judging and neither should you as a player while no Judge is around.
If someone called you a (insert the words we all know, but shouldn't use) to your face, in real life at a game store that guy would get ejected so fast and told not to play at that LGS again.
The same goes with Magic Online.
You have the right to not be harassed or abused.

I had this close game last night online. Back and forth, answer for answer. I was able to get out a huge threat and protect it. he quits when he ran out of answers. I message him "great game, what did you have in your hand" and I get back "mad bro" (with being blocked lol)
I join a 2HG and he happens to be my partner lol. Not a peep out of him and the rest of us are joking around. Half through it, he quits. Some people....
What always surprises me is the lack of general courtesy of players on MTGO. Most of the time, if you're lucky, you'll get a generic "gl hf" or "Hello and good luck" (from the menu) and then a "gg" at the end of a game (often only if you're opponent wins).
Okay, so I appreciate that some players like not having to interact with people face-to-face in MTGO and some don't speak your language, but the number of players who I will say something to or ask a question to and then get nothing in response is shocking! If someone asks you a polite question IRL you do not ignore them, but apparently this is okay in MTGO
There are certainly exceptions. And its frustrating because the games where you have a bit of conversation or banter with your opponent are always more enjoyable!
Unfortunately, the kind of player who will completely ignore their opponent's attempt to be friendly or will make no effort to be remotely sociable themselves are probably not the sort of people on this forum. If there is any chance that you, reader, are one of these people then I implore you to make an effort - I can almost guarantee that it will increase your enjoyment of the game as well as your opponent's.
I had one game where I managed a huge comeback after getting knocked down to 1 life, came back to win it by the skin of my teeth. Said "Good Game.", and got told I was being arrogant. It wasn't at all the sort of "I just beat the crap out of your terrible deck - Good Game!" type of thing, it was the best, most fun sort of game of Magic, where both people keep top-decking threats and answers, and one person just barely happens to draw that one threat that can't be answered and wins on turn 22 type of game.
And then another game where I thought I had my opponent locked up, and so I tapped out, and on the next turn he came out with a combo that killed me with a 44/4 flying dragon. We'd had some initial conversation going in the start of the game, so after complimenting him on his combo and saying how I didn't see it coming, and telling him 'gg', he said absolutely nothing.
I don't know.. maybe Hearthstone has it figured out with its limited set of available things to say in chat (and making those things very prominent on the game board). I didn't like the gameplay of Hearthstone (found it too shallow), but never came away from a game frustrated with the communication skills or lack of sportsmanship.
The reason I started playing MTGO is honestly because I feel that people can be very very abusive in paper magic at tournament levels, and in ways that can't be replicated online.I've been on MTGO for a couple months now and I've had barely any bad interactions. I think if you are going to report someone it should be based on how offensive the language they are using actually is. If someone says you got lucky or something... who cares? You don't even have to look at the text box if you don't want to. I usually don't even have mine up most of the time. If that really makes you that uncomfortable you should probably see a mental health professional.

So what did you want him to do, lay a couple lands and wait for you to swing for 18 twice?

Yes, in this case the game is pretty much over. It has nothing to do with unsportsmanship. If someone cast an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or enchants a Deceiver Exarch with Splinter Twin, I also always insta-give-up. Game over, move on to the next.
or they do what most people do: start a new game without conceding, logging off, or type a diatribe.
I get called every name in the book for having Vorinclex in my edh decks.
A mono-blue player had the audacity to call me a d-bag and said I was the reason the format was getting unfun.
To be fair, blue has never really been about preventing people from casting their spells. It's been about not letting spells resolve.
Green has been a bit prudish about letting other people cast spells at times. It seems to like to occasionally make sure no one but green has any fun at the party.

Vorinclex isn't close to the most "unfair" card in commander. He is good, and that is people's only problem with him.
If the guy didn't want to play against competitive decks he should have put that in the comments of the game he hosted. Had he done that I wouldn't have joined the game.
Playing a format on mtgo and then getting mad when people use cards that are good in that format is just silly.
Playing a format on mtgo and then getting mad and failing to adequately conceal one's social retardation and lack of emotional self-regulation (a.k.a. noobspamming) when people beat you by playing Magic is just silly.
Fixed.
That addresses basically every issue with people on MTGO.

The only time I've really dealt with it is in retro-drafts. I remember the first time I ever drafted the original Ravnica set online, I built a bleed style deck based around things like Souls of the Faultless and Pillory of the Sleepless and random lifegain jank like Centaur Safeguard. I wasn't very experienced with Ravnica at the time and my first round opponent just went off on me when in both games we played, I put down a Souls of the Faultless on turn 3. He kept going on and on about how he couldn't believe he was going to lose to such jank and whatnot. I (probably shouldn't have) fed his trolling by instigating him a little bit. Aside from that one incident, I've never had anyone be too annoying outside of a lucky top deck or thanks mana screw comment.
Is it bad that after a great game, I PM the player saying gg if they leave promptly without saying gg? Most of the time, I get some 'words' back me then blocked.

I find that what works better is to PM them and instead of just saying "gg" to say what you particularly liked about the game including plays and card choices made by your opponent. It is pretty hard to interpret that as gloating.

understood. I do that sometimes - like inquire about their hand, or the early concession.
Also, in v3, i could look at PM history and as the game started, already know what kind of player.
