What makes U/R Cloudpost a bad matchup for monoblack?
I've always felt there were two things that kind of went against MBC in this match.. the first being a large number of draw spells available to the IzzetPost deck, but that has become less of an issue since many run much less draw and then MBC is running less discard as well... the second issue that I always had was a lot of dead cards.. you look at the typical MBC deck and it runs a very heavy creature kill package, which is useless against a deck that averages like 6 - 8 total creatures lol gets a bit better after boarding in 6 LD if you're running that way, but being down 1 game means you're on the ropes from the start
I'm playing 2 Mesmeric Fiend in my main, I kinda wanna up it to four. It has been so good for me on turn 2 and beyond. Taking removal when they have removal in their hand forces them to use one. I haven't been able to play in a daily yet, though. TOMORROW for sure!
How do you beat the mirror? What this primer is missing is sideboard cards that come in and out (in general) against which decks. What do you need vs. mirror, storm, cloudpost, infect, white weenie? If anyone can enlighten us that would be great.
Thanks! I think that was a really valuable post. What does your sideboard look like, then?
Edit: I just added 2 Pristine Talisman to the deck and it's working out really well so far. We're supposed to be Mono Black CONTROL so I figured that's a good control card.
Took out Mesmeric Fiends because letting them have access to their card still just left a bad taste in my mouth.
I think I lowered some 4-of cards to 3-ofs and put in 3 child of night. Very useful against all the aggro decks and eats removal.
Playing in my first daily event right now! Won game 1 against combo elves, booyah.
Lost to U/R cloudpost. We were 1-1 and then game 3 he had a slow hand and I stalled 2 lands forever, very disappointing. I eventually saw a third land but it was too late at that point.
Lost to Infect game 1: I used my crypt rats too soon I think. I made him use a bunch of pump spells but he was still able to kill me on the backswing. Such bull****, lol.
Then in game 2 he just straight up kills me turn 3 with a 13/13 Blight Mamba after I used 2 removal spells on it. Apostles Blessing is so ridiculous!
Took out the lifegain package. It was nice, but I guess it's just not what you want in all matchups. I put Liliana's Spectres, Dead Weight, and I have two more spots to fill, not sure what I want them to be.
I filled the slot with two more Geth's Verdict for a full four. Very good vs. infect. I also have 2 Diabolic Edicts in the sideboard now, their pumps and blessing can't 'counter' those.
------
Entering another daily, hopefully I'll do better than last time. Made some changes as I said above. I'll let you guys know the progress.
Just lost 0-2 to mono-green aggro. Young Wolf is such a beating, my god. =/
I had high hopes for round two and lost to mono-blue delver. I probably should have won the first game but didn't play around his "counter unless you pay 1" spells well enough. Third game I got mana screwed, completely crushed him the 2nd game. I'm not out 12 tickets, and only have enough left for one more daily. I don't know what to do at this point...
I tried Befoul and still didn't like it. And I have a question. I was trading on the new client earlier with the Pauper filter on, and I saw a Sinkhole for trade. Is this right? I thought it wasn't legal online?

sinkhole was printed at rare in MEIV... it probably showed up because if you look at your cards searching "sinkhole" and "show all versions" there is a common promo version out there, but as far as I know it is one of those promos that doesn't really exist... would be a BIG shakeup if it did... ok just tested and when adding them to a pauper deck it isn't legal to play atm
Cool, I was really confused for a bit there. So I'm testing a Grim Discovery build, and it's kind of interesting. I think I might need more lands than I'm running, but once I feel it's tuned up relatively well, I'll post it.
Well, honestly, I wasn't a big fan of the Ravenous Rats. But, I can now see myself dropping Duress of them. I have only had good things to say with Sorin's Thirst... for now, I would actually like to pick up a play set of Stab Wound and put them in their place.
The mass removal has actually been extremely fun, making it hard for opponents to get anything going, then having Chittering Rats slowing them even more. The Crpyt Rats are actually the best win condition, so I felt 3 was needed in case I didn't have an Unearth at hand and already may have had to blow up the Rats at some point.
I actually did run with fewer lands. But, felt I needed to help with turn two--two drops in case I kept a hand with say only one Swamp, and I would prefer to cylce the cylce-lands.
Still making some tweaks, when I get bored I tend to switch things in and out like crazy in my decks and see what I like.
Hm, may I ask what creatures you are running? I am not finding any creatures I like to use in the deck other than the ones already in it.
Usually I have no shortage of creatures in my decks, as I typically play very fast, very aggressive decks. I think that's why I am enjoying this one for now, it's much different than my norm.
I'm not usually a fan of distress/duress in either path... I personally find it better as a sideboard addition because there are times where I really don't wanna draw into either, but again I guess it does come down to the discard package you're running main ie specters vs augurs vs rats
I wasn't taking it that way, was honestly just wondering what other creatures you were running that I wasn't. The only reason I have so much removal is I didn't see anymore suitable creatures.
Good to see this thread is active. I may or may not be updating it, even if I do, it won't be for another couple weeks. If anyone here would like to write their own primer, I would gladly retire this one.
What do you think about trying some diffrent stuff like Black Cat and Altar's Reap? Turn 2 Black Cat than Turn 3 Cry of Contrition haunting Black Cat and sacrifice it to Altar's Reap seems pretty wicked.
That's a cool synergy, but my concern is twofold. The first, you're not actually disrupting their hand until turn three (unless you cast a duress, or some such T1), the second, you're not putting any damage on the board until turn 4 at least. Past that, I'm not sure Altar's reap has many other synergies, though I do kind of like the use of Cry of Contrition.
Hey guys, I haven't been here in a while. I've worked hard on a list for MBC that I'd like. It's hard to find balance between discard and creature kill, but I think I managed it.
The MD has a focus on creature kill, as I've been seeing a lot of affinity and monoG stompy lately. I still have 6 discard spells MD, though. I have been loving augur of skulls. he's done lots of work, making control players waste a removal on him, and then I unearth it. Regeneration is very relevant, as he often lets you survive the critical 'topdeck mode' turns. the singletons in the board all fill a particular matchup. the 4th shinobi comes in against post decks, as hitting an early shinobi is almost the only way to secure a win against them. they shine against control and the mirror. tendrils comes in against 'slower' aggro decks such as WW and affinity(lifegain is important in these matchups). the third corrupt is for grindy matchups. the third crypt rats comes in against gobbos, storm and such. I board out my kill for discard in the storm/control matchups, and shrivel is there because goblin storm is a thing. they're also relevant against elves, goblins and some WW builds. Dead weight, because I hate losing to infect on turn 2, and to kill turn one delvers.
What are aboms? Cause I wouldn't remove phyrexian ragers from the deck, the deck is all about 2 for 1s and phyrexian rager is a great 2 for 1. Ditto sign in blood, it's pretty much a key card, don't even think about removing it imo. Offline MBC is very different due to being able to play hymn to tourach and sinkhole (why is sinkhole not in your list btw? if you can play it, you probably should even if it's evil), but if you want to remove anything from that list for chittering rats it should probably be duress which is more of a sideboard card. Also, 4x geth's verdict is imo way too many, and you actually have zero direct removal spells in there which is a mistake. Some combination of victim of night, echoing decay, dead weight and spinning darkness is probably a good idea. Go down to one or two verdicts, more in the board if you feel you need them. As for tendrils, you can probably safely remove a couple of specter's for them if you want. Finally if you're running corrupt and tendrils, I wouldn't play barren moor's and I'd definitely think about going up to 23 or 24 lands. Anyway, something to think about.
Not sure what card you're talking about that's $60 :). Maybe sinkhole? I play online, prices are way different. Anyway, assuming you don't have access to sinkhole, I'd suggest something like this. This version has a lot more cheap removal which will help you stabilise until you get to the point where you can bring in your wincon:
yes sink hole is around 60$ a pop on most sites I look at and I know the lgs would have them they would charge about 100$ for them cause they almost never see a card like that.

@Pahshowned: You've provided some useful advice. I like the idea of using Pristine Talisman.
What does everyone think about a Grim Discovery-Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse package? It seems like it might be worthwhile . . .

I just started playing this deck again, very fun.
My list is as follows:
16 Swamp
4 Barren Moor
3 Polluted Mire
Creatures: 15
4 Chittering Rats
3 Crypt Rats
4 Phyrexian Rager
4 Viscera Dragger
2 Diabolic Edict
4 Geth's Verdict
2 Snuff Out
4 Sorin's Thirst
3 Spinning Darkness
2 Duress
2 Sign in Blood
3 Unearth
Now that I am looking at it, I am thinking of taking out the 2 Snuff Out and putting in another Spinning Darkness and Geth's Verdict.

Disfigure(3)
Dead weight(4)
Grasp of darkness(4)
This is where I am at so far, you have no idea how hard it is to find chittering rats and aboms offline.
20 swamp
2 barren moor
4 Sign in Blood
2 Corrupt
4 Duress
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Geth's Verdict
4 Dauthi Horror
4 Ravenous Rats
4 Liliana's Specter
4 Phyrexian Rager
Ragers, and horrors will get replaced with Rats and Abombs when I can get them, I only got 1 of each ATM.
What should I remove for 3-4 Tendrils? I almost want to drop the sign in blood for them honestly.
I think horrifying revelation is better than duress but its un targeted.
I dont think I will ever have a storm/post deck on the other side of the table.
Decks I play and stuff.

Modern Mono U Tron
I dont want to pay 60$ for a single card that's just a common.
I play paper pauper cause its cheap and fun, 60$ a card =/= fun.
I am actually thinking of droping the moors but they are a draw card that happens to be a land IMO, I would never actually play it as a land.
I know I need direct removal but you missed the top part of the post.
Decks I play and stuff.
Legacy Burn
Modern Mono U Tron
24 swamp
Card draw
4 Sign in blood
Removal/discard
4 Hymn to Tourach
1 Geth's Verdict
3 Victim of night
2 Spinning darkness/echoing decay (darkness is probably better, not sure if you have access to it though)
2 Tendrils of corruption
1 Dead Weight
4 Chittering Rats (not sure what to put here if you don't have the rats, maybe fume spitters?)
4 Ravenous Rats
4 Phyrexian Rager
3 Liliana's Specter
2 Corrupt
2 Dauthi Horror (replace with abominations if you get them)
Sideboard some combination of:
Duress
Geth's verdict
Victim of Night
Go for the Throat
Dead Weight
Snuff Out
Decks I play and stuff.
