While I think we'll only get a couple of creatures with populate as an activated ability, that new 4 CMC Dryad got me thinking how good Populate could be in Momir Basic.
Of course she would destroy herself, but at the cost of doubling your army later on, that might be worth it.
Just an observation.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
I think you misunderstand populate. It's not proliferate for tokens. You get to put one copy of one token you control into play. Trostani's activated ability wouldn't kill herself or double your army, but rather give you an additional copy of any one of your creatures.

I just re-read it. That actually makes it better since its reusable.

I'm sure there are some interesting strategies based on spending mana on populate and keeping your card or making a land drop while populating. If I'm at 8, and have a good creature i'd rather Populate 2x from guildmage while laying a land to build up to Emrakul or something if whatever I'm copying doesn't do it.

Nice. I've actually never seen that overcosted Man-o-war before.
Of course I was one of those players who didn't play during Kamigawa, for reasons completely unrelated to power level.

I played a game and turn 3 pulled Witch Hunter with only one plains out, he waited till my turn 4 and I dropped a plains and he conceded. I thought that was really premature since I had no threats of my own out... You can always pray for a leviathan reset or something.
So I just started playing momir two days a go so my level of crazy board state is far less than most of you. In a game that just ended, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice followed by Vesuvan Doppelganger. We made it to turn 8 before he quit on me but it was pretty hilarious.
Between Trostani and Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage, is it justifable to add more plains and forest to your decks? These cards are not going to show up that often, but when they do, you are going to win most games you are able to activate them.
So, the question is: Is it justifiable to adjust your deck to account for 2 creatures out of 6925?
The answer is: NO!
Populate is great and all, but Mountains are still king in terms of activated abilities (including all of the pumpable ones) on creatures.
(What the hell did you RL MTG players do to Portal? Did you hate it so much that you had deck burning bonfires to get rid of the cards, thus increasing the rarity and prices? Did people mail back their fat packs to WotC in droves, demanding refunds?)
The only reason people are even putting Islands in their deck is Azorius Guildmage so im not sure i agree with your statement.
The fact that you can discard any lands you don't need means you're usually better off with a slightly more even ratio. Aside from the "I win" guildmage, there are card draw creatures like Azure Mage for when you need to ramp past 8 mana or make up for their Mournwhelk, or Memnarch for the to take over the game.
Rarely have I needed more than 4 Mountains in a game, and I think having the ability to hit domain in a game, even if you don't usually choose to do so, will win you more games.

I think the Guildmage is the most broken as it doesn't tap for its ability, then Trostani and then the Temple.

It would be insane if you hit the creature that kills tokens and hit trostani to populate it.
