Im sure we've all spent a fair share of money into MTGO, I'm afraid with this digital next thing they are supposedly releasing this year that my MTGO card collection will disappear or be worthless? Anyone else afraid? Should I be?
Looks like there was something that was talked about it in a stock holders meeting or something with hasbro in November of 2015. Then some talk about it about 5 months later. That is all I can find. Mostly just people speculating that it is going to combine MTGO and Duels and bring them into a better program or to make magic more able to be an e-sport. Though all of that is just speculation. I do not see anything recent but I have also given up on checking the magic website.
I don't think transition to "digital next" will kill the Mtgo collections since most players on mtgo are pro. Wizards will not doing something stupid like new things with new collections only what will kick the pro away.
I disagree that "most players on mtgo are pro". There are 1,000's of players. Maybe many of them want to be pro...
They are already driving people away. This happens each time they drop support for a play format or event type or make some other cost-cutting change. I don't like draft leagues, so I stopped drafting once Kaladesh came out.
I'm not a pro, but I've been playing mtgo since day one. Or, rather, I used to play. Its been a month or so now...
What I would love to see is a MTGO platform that give you access to all cards ever printed. The only thing you have to pay for is a monthly subscription and/or tournament entry fee.
MTGO is terrible to stream. And having to fork out tons of money for a deck means less people streaming.

I can't agree with this, to pay for deck, this is how the way to make game keep working. If you dont wanna invest money into deck, the best solution is just dont play it or just playing very casually. MTGO is not just a normal online game, it's an environment simultaneously influence by paper game. If its not working in this way, it would be just like another duel - rubbish. No matter CCG or TCG, it's need people to keep invest into it for alive.
maybe I should speak more clearly, player on MTGO most are semi-pro to pro, some player famous online first then be to a professional player. Pro MTG player is nothing like professional game streamer, many of them just play magic and dont stream, like you wont see Shouta Yasooka stream his play online

Except in practice this is not a reality. The online meta is vastly different than the paper meta.

Maybe if they were starting from scratch today they would do things differently. To just trash MTGO with all the money and time people have put into collections would probably kill the majority of their established player base. I know it would tick me off and I am sure there are people out there with much better collections than me who are more involved in it. Also it would destroy the online card dealers who help sponsor websites and streamers dedicated to MTG.
They need to do something but destroying the value of collections is not one of them. If they destroy that value they better be ready to start handing out money.

As someone who has hundreds invested in MTGO... I'm ok with it being destroyed. It needs to be gutted. It is abysmal and helps no one.
I would gladly throw my entire MTGO collection in the trash if it meant getting a better platform.

Are you willing to reimburse people who have thousands invested? The stores who could possibly have 10s and 100s of thousands invested as well as their way of life?

Through my life time I've invested thousands...
Still ok with it.
New article by Chris Cocks (President, Wizards of the Coast). Related to this thread, it mentions:
We are reimagining digital versions of Magic and other Wizards games. We recently created the Digital Games Studio, a group of all-stars led by industry veteran Jeffrey Steefel. Jeffrey's team includes experienced Wizards game designers and industry talent from Dire Wolf Digital, Valve Corporation, Cryptic Studios, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Activision, BioWare, and many others. The Magic Online team is now included in this group, as well as digital art and game design. They're all thinking about how players might tap mana and prepare spells in the future, and I can't wait for you to see what they're working on.
It's about time. Only guy I like less that has had his hand in the pot is Tom Lapille

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
I seriously doubt they will remove players' collections when that time approaches. I'm sure it's fair to say that Wizards has lost a portion of its MTGO fanbase (maybe not lost, just in hibernation), and removing their cards when DN becomes available would be shooting themselves in the foot.
The online client is absolutely terrible. I'm not sure how other players think it's great, but it's been in serious need of a revamp. As far as the digital market, Hearthstone and others have been dominating compared to MTGO. Sad that Magic was the card game that started it all and is getting killed here.
