So, I was about to set up my account online. It is actually running in the back ground right now.
I started playing again at the start of the summer, but haven't had time to make it into the card shop, so I thought I would play online. But then, I had a nasty thought. Is MTGO III worth it?
Can you get a full set of cards on MTGO III for a reasonable amount of money? Can you play MTGO III on a tight budget? And is it worth it to NOT be able to play those cards at your local store or have to buy them again?
Given all the bugs, hang ups, late releases, server problems, etc... Is it better to make the time and play at the store? or let the time fit MY schedule and play it online?

MTGO does what it does quite well. I love MTGO as it's the only way for me to play MTG at all. I don't have the time to drive to a shop, and the shop I could drive to isn't sanctioned or anything, just some guys I don't know.
So MTGO lets me play MTG, but if I had a choice between MTGO and MTGP* around my kitchen table with my friends, MTGP would win hands down.
As to your specific questions, budget play on MTGO is pretty easy. There are lots of events that focus on just commons. Heck, even WotC is intending to start officially supporting PDC towards the end of the year.
The card prices will probably surprise you. Not because they're too high, but because they're so low. There's a lot of reasons for it, but right now, singles on MTGO are ridiculously low priced compared to their paper counterparts. The only exceptions are IPA and to a lesser extent, OTJ. Again there are reasons for this, the largest being scarcity of the cards themselves.
MTGO has made some pretty good progress in the past few months in regards to card bugs, interface problems, etc. Card sets are released on time now (which is still woefully long after the paper release... ) but other things may frustrate you still.
Anyway, that rambling chunk of text can be summarized like so: if you can't play paper very often, your money is probably better spent on MTGO. If you can play paper often you should hold onto that playgroup for dear life and enjoy the friendship.

MTGO Writer and Epic Time-Waster.
If you have questions about MTGO PM me, I'm all up ons, as it were.
Check out my articles on http://puremtgo.com/ I'm the nerd you see there... wait, not that one. Nope, not that one either... yeah. That one.
Thanks for the opinions. Here is a few follow up questions:
How easy is it to obtain a playable set on MTGO and what is the price difference?
Do most people do that for drafting?
What is the cost of an MTGO draft?
What is the cost of an MTGO standard tourney?
Thanks again for the help.
hamtastic hit the nail on the head.
MTGO is super cheap right now! If you are looking to get into MTGO and are concerned about the monetary output to do so.... there has never been a better time!
Most drafts will cost you right about $12 - $15 for a Draft Set (3 Booster Packs and the 2 Ticket entry fee)
Standard Tourneys on MTGO depend on which format you want to play. Draft, Sealed, Constructed?
Most Constructed events will cost you 6 Event Tickets to play ($6)
Sealed and Drafts are in the same ballpark as previously mentioned.
Hope this helps. GL with your decision and hope to see you ingame!
If you're looking for some cheap fun, MTGO has plenty of casual formats that are extremely to get into. If you're looking to play in tournaments, prepare to play with plenty of very good players testing decks for events, as well as many pros in the 8-4 drafts.

Also, the good thing about MTGO is you only ever need 4 of a card for deck building purposes. You don't need a playset for each deck you plan to put the card in.
I've been playing for quite some time and I enjoy it. Shards isn't released online as yet, October 20 is the tentative release date.

I think it is definately worth it. The ability to draft whenever you have the fleeting fancy to is great. You will probably not make money off of it, but it is definately worth playing. You can get into a game any time and play a variety of crazy formats (Momir Basic is my favorite).

Casual Play
Multi-player
Pauper (commons only-very reasonable)
and many others that are not super expensive to get into.
If you would like to spend countless $$$ you can always get into competitive play.
I would say that it's worth it. I love the game of MTG and don't have time to play locally so this is my only option.
