Pack 1 pick 1:
Feat of Resistance
Shatter
Awaken the Bear
Mardu Hordechief
Whirlwind Adept
Kheru Dreadmaw
Temur Banner
Treasure Cruise
Wind-Scarred Crag
Snowhorn Rider
Timely Hordemate
Arc Lightning
War-Name Aspirant
--> Dig Through Time
Forest
I think I like Arc Lightning slightly better, but they're close enough that I went with the 2 tickets.
Pack 1 pick 2:
Naturalize
Jeskai Student
Summit Prowler
Sagu Archer
Scaldkin
Bitter Revelation
Temur Banner
Jungle Hollow
Abomination of Gudul
Whirlwind Adept
--> Sandsteppe Citadel
Kheru Bloodsucker
Tuskguard Captain
Forest
No particularly good blue cards, so land fixing leaves me open (hopefully to 5 color control, which is one of my favorite decks in this format).
Pack 1 pick 3:
Defiant Strike
Trumpet Blast
Alpine Grizzly
--> Alabaster Kirin
Sidisi's Pet
Throttle
Blossoming Sands
Abzan Banner
Cranial Archive
Kheru Bloodsucker
Warden of the Eye
Howl of the Horde
Island
Tough call between the Warden and the Kirin. In the end I would have much rather had the Warden, but taking the Kirin left me a lot more open here.
Pack 1 pick 4:
--> Kill Shot
Barrage of Boulders
Leaping Master
Tranquil Cove
Wetland Sambar
Siegecraft
Kin-Tree Warden
Cancel
Goblinslide
Brave the Sands
Jeskai Elder
Island
It's possible that Jeskai Elder is the pick here, but I always want 1 or 2 Kill Shots in any controlling deck.
Pack 1 pick 5:
Ainok Bond-Kin
Shatter
Tranquil Cove
Wetland Sambar
Siegecraft
Kin-Tree Warden
Taigam's Scheming
Dutiful Return
Seek the Horizon
--> Frontier Bivouac
Swamp
More fixing, chose Bivouac over Tranquil Cove in case I ended up in more of a 5 color build, though at this point U/W/X was looking probable.
Pack 1 pick 6:
Erase
Tormenting Voice
Unyielding Krumar
--> Smite the Monstrous
Valley Dasher
Scout the Borders
Taigam's Scheming
Gurmag Swiftwing
Tomb of the Spirit Dragon
Island
Solid sideboard card out of a weak pack.
Pack 1 pick 7:
Tusked Colossodon
Erase
Smite the Monstrous
Bloodfire Mentor
Embodiment of Spring
Whirlwind Adept
Molting Snakeskin
--> Waterwhirl
Mountain
This should not be going this late.
Pack 1 pick 8:
Salt Road Patrol
Smite the Monstrous
Bloodfire Mentor
Embodiment of Spring
--> Glacial Stalker
Scion of Glaciers
Heart-Piercer Bow
Plains
Lots of solid midrange blockers for my deck here, but the Stalker is better at blocking early creatures and better as a finisher.
Pack 1 pick 11:
--> Defiant Strike
Sidisi's Pet
Abzan Banner
Cranial Archive
Island
Pack 1 pick 12:
Wetland Sambar
Siegecraft
--> Goblinslide
Island
Well, if I get Goblinslide this late, how can I not go into the deck?
Pack 1 pick 13:
--> Shatter
Dutiful Return
Swamp
Pack 1 pick 14:
--> Taigam's Scheming
Island
Pack 1 pick 15:
--> Mountain
------ KTK ------
Pack 2 pick 1:
Mardu Warshrieker
Feed the Clan
--> Jeskai Student
Monastery Flock
Cancel
Sultai Scavenger
Temur Banner
Rite of the Serpent
Thornwood Falls
Abomination of Gudul
Blinding Spray
Goblinslide
Sultai Charm
Altar of the Brood
Mountain
Not too much for me here, I want the Goblinslide but it should wheel.
Pack 2 pick 2:
Feat of Resistance
Canyon Lurkers
Longshot Squad
Crippling Chill
Kheru Dreadmaw
Mystic of the Hidden Way
Krumar Bond-Kin
Abzan Banner
Treasure Cruise
Armament Corps
Watcher of the Roost
War-Name Aspirant
--> Thousand Winds
Forest
Bomb.
Pack 2 pick 3:
Swift Kick
Hooting Mandrills
Erase
Kin-Tree Warden
--> Swiftwater Cliffs
Jeskai Windscout
Disowned Ancestor
Rush of Battle
Monastery Flock
Bitter Revelation
Witness of the Ages
Abzan Ascendancy
Island
Probably should have taken the Aven here.
Pack 2 pick 4:
Act of Treason
Bloodfire Mentor
Highland Game
Dismal Backwater
Mardu Hateblade
Valley Dasher
Dragonscale Boon
--> Force Away
Rakshasa's Secret
Incremental Growth
Death Frenzy
Mountain
Pack 2 pick 5:
--> Mardu Hordechief
Ainok Tracker
Bloodfire Mentor
Highland Game
Dismal Backwater
Mardu Hateblade
Valley Dasher
Dragonscale Boon
Singing Bell Strike
Molting Snakeskin
Swamp
Not as good in this type of instant/sorcery based control, but still comes down turn 3 and shuts off morphs.
Pack 2 pick 6:
Sage-Eye Harrier
Dismal Backwater
Sultai Banner
Disowned Ancestor
Siegecraft
Whirlwind Adept
Rotting Mastodon
--> Master the Way
Mardu Blazebringer
Forest
This definitely cements red as a splash color in our deck.
Pack 2 pick 7:
Sagu Archer
--> Kill Shot
Jeskai Windscout
Lens of Clarity
Firehoof Cavalry
Highland Game
Monastery Flock
Sidisi's Pet
Island
Pack 2 pick 8:
Tusked Colossodon
Trumpet Blast
Scaldkin
Quiet Contemplation
Lens of Clarity
Blossoming Sands
--> Quiet Contemplation
Mountain
Now things are starting to come together. I was expecting this card to be okay, but it's insane if you have the support. Most decks only have 1 or 2 threats in play at a time, so eliminating 1 of them for 2 turns with every instant or sorcery is huge.
Pack 2 pick 9:
Feed the Clan
--> Monastery Flock
Cancel
Temur Banner
Thornwood Falls
Blinding Spray
Mountain
Goblinslide didn't wheel? What is this?
Pack 2 pick 10:
--> Crippling Chill
Kheru Dreadmaw
Mystic of the Hidden Way
Abzan Banner
Treasure Cruise
Forest
Nice late pick up. I might have taken the Cruise if I didn't already have 2 delve draw spells.
Pack 2 pick 11:
Swift Kick
Erase
--> Monastery Flock
Bitter Revelation
Island
These 2 Flocks were very nice to get late to cement our early defense.
Pack 3 pick 1:
Kill Shot
Ainok Tracker
Bloodfire Mentor
Highland Game
Dismal Backwater
Mardu Hateblade
Valley Dasher
Dragonscale Boon
Glacial Stalker
Rakshasa's Secret
--> Jeskai Charm
Pine Walker
Bear's Companion
Retribution of the Ancients
Forest
Every mode on this card is fantastic in this deck, bouncing a creature, pumping a horde of Goblins, or even enabling a surprise attack for lethal.
I left out Hordechief, 1 of the Kirins, Disdainful Stroke, and Smite the Monstrous, going for a very spell-heavy deck to turn on my Contemplation and Goblinslide.
Round 1 I was up against some sort of slow Sultai deck whose first plays were turn 3 Scout the Borders, turn 6 Rakshasa Vizier (he tried to pay 6 for it, so I think he didn't play it on 5 because he misread the mana cost...). Game 2 he got manascrewed, and that was that.
Round 2 was the real challenge, against a 5 color deck with a consistent mana base, lots of morphs, Savage Knuckleblade, and Butcher of the Horde. The first game lasted seemingly forever; he kept playing more and more threats and I kept trading Goblins for them or tapping them down. It lasted until I had 10 cards left in my deck (and sadly no Thousand Winds drawn), when he managed to finally run me out of instants and sorceries and kill me with evasive creatures. However, at this point he had 7 minutes left on his clock while I had about 12. Game 2 started out as another long, drawn out stall, but my opponent conceded when I had only a slight advantage, as he was down to 3 minutes and I guess thought he would have a better chance winning a fast game than breaking out of the stall in time. He almost succeeded, too: when he ran out of time game 3, I had an empty board while he had an Efreet Weaponmaster in play and a Savage Knuckleblade in his hand. I spent most of the game with 4 white cards stranded in my hand, but I did draw Quiet Contemplation and Goblinslide and they were able to stall for long enough to keep me alive.
Round 3 I was against an Abzan deck, whose outlast creatures had a pretty bad matchup with my bounce spells. Game 2 I managed to bounce 5 creatures with Thousand Winds, including a 4/4 Bloodflies and a 6/6 Abzan Guide.
