People underestimate the card when they're playing against it - it can straight-up take games.
I don't think people underestimate it when drafting: I still don't think it's a very high pick. It's pretty bad without loner, and it's not that easy to make an aggressive deck that can actually reliably get the opponent to a low life total AND only have one creature. When it works though, it's pretty sick.
I have seen this "gambit" work from time to time (sorry, had to try it), but it's not the best.
Definitely not the best. It wasn't my primary plan. More like Plan C.
The draft started out with Red clearly open. I hoped to get into Green or Blue as a secondary color. Neither was really open, though.
I started thinking about a desperation switch to Black after Demonic Taskmaster showed up at 1.11. I hate switching colors in this format because it's so hard to get enough playables if you waste picks, and I had already taken a few cards in both green and blue. Pack 2 was totally bereft of playable creatures and I was starting to panic.
Pack 3 bailed me out to a degree, with two powerful rares and a bunch of playable Black creatures. The deck still wasn't good, though. Playing Black without the benefit of Death Wind is not a good feeling.
Playing the deck, I was surprised how effective Gambit was. The toughness boost is key. It gets your creature out of range of bad removal like Guise of Fire or Righteous Blow. With sacrifice outlets, you can play other creatures after combat to block and still have intimidate on your turn.
You're going to get blown out by the deck with Mist Ravens, but isn't that true for everyone?

Basically, it's a gambit.
Draft it on Cubetutor!
