After making top 8 at a PTQ this past weekend, I ended up losing in the finals. I couldn't help but rethink my draft picks. P1P1 had only 3 real relevant cards in my mind - Mardu Heart-Piercer, Icefeather Aven, and Narset, Enlightened Master. I thought it was too early to commit to jeskai and I thought Heart-Piercer was the better card, plus there were lots of playable red cards so I though 1 would table. I ended up almost losing to to Icefeather Aven in the semi-finals and lost to Icefeather Aven in the finals. What are some of your opinions? At P1P1, did I make the wrong choice?
Ice Feather or Heart Piercer both seem fine, as both are very strong. I probably would have taken the Heart Piercer, but I wouldn't fault someone for going with the Ice Feather, as I think they are close. Definitely not Narset though, she not only needs a specific color combo but a specific deck strategy to even be playable, much less first pickable.
Even a bad Flametongue Kavu is still surprisingly good. I could see someone picking the morph if they have a strong preference for UG, but I like the removal better.
But after playing a number of Khans drafts I think I would always take the Mardu Heart-Piercer in that situation. It's such a brutal tempo play on-curve and is usually still relevant even later in the game.
The Icefeather Aven is too, but it can't go straight to the dome to end the game, which I've done with Heart-Piercer more than once.
I think it's reasonably close though. I wouldn't fault anyone for taking the bird.
