I opened what I felt was a Highly underwhelming pool. I havn't played a prerelease since Guildpact, but I've been drafting and playing constructed consistently since Shards of Alara. Here is my poolL
Sooo, please tell me what I did wrong, and how I could improve. I went 2-3 in the event finishing juuuust outside of prizes (which annoyed me). There were 30 people at the prerelease.
I think your mana base is a little speculative. I don't think Grim Backwoods is worth splashing. You don't want to spend 5 mana to trade your creature on the board for a random card, and it's too much to hold up to mitigate removal spells unless you're way ahead.
I'd cut a swamp and the backwoods for another forest and plains. With the land out, you're only splashing for 2 cheap black spells, so the shimmering grotto is a full black source, so you still have 3, which is what I'd aim for for a 2 card splash.
I think hollowhenge beast is better than somberwald spider, so I'd make that swap. I don't really like deadly allure, but I guess with young wolf and doomed traveler it's not the worst.
I'd also cut pitchfork for Heavy Mattock because it gives me fond memories of Vulshok Morningstar, even if it's worse in more than one way.
I'd probably play dryad over silverchase fox or niblis of the urn maindeck. I'm not sure how good niblis is, but I'd guess that more people have forests than enchantments that you need to remove. There are several common pacifisms in the format, but you don't really have many creatures that you're worried about getting pacified. Most of your guys are just random dorks. Obviously you can side the dryad out if they're not green.
It's hard to say what really went wrong here. TBH, I would be very excited to open a pool like this and I would have expected this deck to go better than 2-3.
I would have cut tragic slip and backwoods at least to make the mana base more consistent. Maybe black completely. Was that a problem during your games?
Do you remember how you lost? Maybe you just have to play a little bit tighter. I think this deck had all the tools to win.
I made the mistake of playing Grim Backwoods this weekend as well. It is a horrible card.
Knowing what I know now, I would have played G/W taking out the black removal and adding Heavy Mattock and Rally the Peasants. I would think Rally+Devotion = win.
