Hi there! It's almost my birthday, and a couple of friends and I wanted to buy a box for some limited celebrations. What, in your opinions, would be the best to get?
Two main things to consider:
Lasting Value: I'm okay with drafting older sets, but I'd like to draft ones that have cards that are still played today (Legacy etc). Which sets have the highest number of still-valuable cards (ones with 9 dollar uncommons are always fun)
Fun Factor: Is the set fun to draft? The more ridiculous the better!
Unhinged and unglued are kind of meh to me, the lands are alright but nothing else has any value outside of that one draft.
I'd say buy a box of Onslaught. The fetchlands are still worth a pretty penny and the draft format is interesting without being so deep that you don't really start to get it before you run out of packs, like Rav would be. Morph is a mechanic that gets even more exciting to play with when people aren't especially familiar with the cards.
Wit's End is the PERFECT answer to your opponent's Monomania however.
Just hold on to your Wit's End when they Monomania, so you can Wit's End them on your next turn!!!
I think this is fairly reminiscent of the "Jace Battles" we have seen in past standards.. My guess is we will soon witness the great Monomania-Wit's End battles.
Triple Lorwyn draft is lots of fun, though I don't think there's much that's worth much (since the original Lorwyn planeswalkers got reprinted in M10 and M11). The tribal mechanic is really interesting, though Blue-Black Faeries always tends to dominate if you can manage it.
I don't know how attached you are to the idea of a box. If you really just want to get a box get Rav because it is a ton of fun and has the shock lands and bob.
If you really want to try what I think the best sealed product limited format is what around here is called Suicide Draft (Pick your own packs). Each person picks three boosters and you do a draft with a ton of different boosters. There can be up to 24 differenent boosters, altough the most I've seen is probably 10.
Besides the fact that this format is incredibly diverse, it also showcases the awesom interactions that you can have in limited. Time spiral block is a ton of fun because you get to play with th timeshifted mechanics along with the originals. The sheer amount of random synergy is awesome. Lorywn's tribal theme is awesome when conisdered throughout the years. This format is awesome, and you can be a wild or as tame with the packs as you want. Also, you can play money sets. The sickest (and worst) deck that you can only draft in suicide was Hive Mind and Pact of the Titan combo. He actually drew it one game (the only game he won).
Anyway, I reccomend this format.

Accomplishments:
1800+ in Limited
3-0ing after drafting 17 non-basics in Cube
I don't know what you think this game's purpose is, but I play it because I figure it's the best way to learn how to hex everyone I don't like and summon dragons to do my bidding.
It hasn't worked yet, but I have high hopes for my future abilities as an occult practitioner.
The consensus among friends and forum goers seems to be that multiple booster types is a good route. Where can I get booster packs of older sets for a reliable price without going the whole box route?
I was playing a draft the second week up avacyn being out and i was constructing my deck when the guy across from me spilled his cherry kool-aid all over mine and his cards, he had a griselbrand and I had a cavern of souls.
Champions. That draft format just had so many things to do.
Champions had a great limited game. Say what you will about the set in general, but those were some fun drafts. Devouring Greed/Rage could be a little overwhelming, but what every format has their "zomg-nuke" buttons. And Kabuto Moth is probably my favorite white filler card.
Apocalypse, not only it the most fun draft i've ever done with multiple workable strategies it also has multiple valuable cards in the set.
Vindicate, Spiritmonger, off colour pain lands, etc.
Dood, even the off color pain lands are pretty worthless now. Ditto for spiritmonger, and the sealed product is $200 a box or so. IPA is a lot of fun, but barring the new extended bumps single prices, it's not worth it given the price.
Only like 5 of the cards are actually worth something though.
A draft set will run you like $7.50 though ^^; That's what I'd go with, it's just a really fun draft format.

Starcitygames is pretty reasonable.

Hey, lolis with katanas are awesome, and I don't care about their home country.
i recommend for you to buy a box of worldwake.
money cards
jace
avenger of zendikar
abyssal persecutor
stoneforge mystic
bassilisk collar
omnath
man-lands
triple worldwake isnt the best draft format ever, but its your best chance at opening money.

This is bad advice. Worldwake has Jace and a lot of cards no one really wants to trade for or buy that much. If you want to play the lottery go ahead, but you're definitely not maximizing your EV with Worldwake.

Zendikar is a much better buy just because of the fetches. They're basically sure to retain value longer than most everything from WWK and the fact that they're rare means you'll likely see more.
And beyond the fetches, there's still a handful of good rares/mythics (DoJ, Iona, Lotus Cobra, Sorin, Valakut, etc.)
I can't say much about the quality of the draft as I just started drafting, but if I were to buy a box, ZEN would be my choice.

If you having burn problems I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but a bolt ain't one.
I think that Worldwake and Zendikar are the best sets for opening money. Keep in mind that they have more rares (chases + manlands/fetches) that are worth money opposed to ROE and M11 mostly having only mythics that are worth money.
Zen was a pretty bad set for draft though. The format was completely dominated by aggro. Rise, on the other hand, is filled with playable archetypes given knowledge of the set, and has a decent amount of cash as well.

ROE is practically crack a Vengevine/Gideon or your box is crap, and even then it probably still sucked. There isn't a single rare much above $3. ZEN is a much better choice if your main concern is recouping some value. Like everone else said: Fetches. Duh.
Not disagreeing that it's a fun draft; haven't had as much fun since TPF, which is another crapshoot outside of how much fun it is.
I'd also recommend Triple Conflux, there weren't many archtypes, but when you can end up playing five color every time it makes for some interesting picks. Although outside of KotR it's not worth much.

Well, Happy Birthday, Scootypuff! When is your Birthday?
I’d recommend either Zendikar, or M11.
In terms of value, if you average out the price of just Rare, and Mythic Rare + Chances of getting them per box, you will get Worldwake as best value, M11 as second best value, Zendikar, and then Rise of Eldrazi.
BUT, IMO Worldwake is not that fun to draft but that could just be me. Draft Rise is the most fun for me but you won’t get much value out of it.
Hence, I recommend Zendikar or M11 and both of them are kinda fun to play in limited format.
I don't recommend any set from Shards of Alara block though since it will soon out of Standards
