So, the power feel kind of spread around. Green stuck out to me as a color with some strong card, but not a ton of depth. Red was similar but with an even shallower pool. White had a few good cards and a bunch of mediocre stuff. Blue has a lot of good cards, but no great ones. Black is similarly lacking in punch. I came up with two builds....here's the one I played:
I'm not up for give a rundown on all the matches, but I finished 4-4 (L-W-L-W-W-W-L-L). I never had an infractions against me, which is minor, but something I'm happy with for my first Competitive REL event. The mana base was certainly greedy, and I paid for it at times. I did side over to the UG deck in three matches...one I won, two I lost. I found it was particularly necessary against fliers, as the GWr build is sorely lacking in tools against them. I did make a few play errors, and a couple of questionable judgement calls, one of which might have cost be a match (I didn't call his buff on a trick when he attacked and I had a block on board that would've traded), but on the whole I was reasonably happy with my performance, and did get lots of favorable combats with the various mortals' tricks. I think I lean toward UG as actually being the better build, but it's tough, as I feel it's somewhat lacking in power. I didn't make my goal of 5-3 for the PTQ, but I had a good time and think I was at least respectable.
Some common sideboard moves:
- Adding Ephara's Warden against decks with numerous targets
- Adding Silent Sentinel in slow matchups
- In the UG deck, adding the Akroan Horse against gorund-based decks (particularly red and green).
I'd love some feedback, as I definitely feel I had room for improvement. A couple of questions:
- Which of the decks do you like better? Or is there another deck entirely I should have run?
- Any tweaks you like to either of my builds
- How would you rate the overall strength of this pool?
Setessan Oathsworn should have been in your first deck, with all your tricks it is probably one of your best cards. I think your mana base was fine. Nylea's Presencse, two satyr's, amulet, and one mountain is fine for 2 red cards. This deck has more power than the U/G pool but a little less control.
Against the slower decks I'd go with the G/W/R deck as you should be able to get the mana you need. Against the faster decks or decks with fliers side into the U/G build would probably be ideal.
Yeah, I think you're probably right about the oathsworn, I was probably being overly conservative with my mana base there (though I have three red cards, not two).
