Nothing I'm interested in for a second pick. As I have a few black cards, I took Read the Bones. Pharika's mender was possibly a better pick, but I don't like that card
I tried building a GW deck, but I wasn't happy with the last few cards. So I decided to splash black for Spiteful Returned and also include the Scholar in the deck.
p1p2: I don't rather tromper much higher than shieldmate and taking the one good pickable white card would improve your first pick. (There are also two other green pickable in the pack, so you might end-up with a weaker deck in the long run. Anyway, I think shieldmate stands on its own.)
p1p4: I never know which of skirmisher or sun guide is better. I do think that both volley and smith are playable in red so they may be signal that red would be open.
p1p5: I'd take chorus because I prefer WU and GU over WB and GB.
p1p6: swordwise better than tromper? It's not always possible to get double green on turn 2.
p1p7: temper and reveler would indicate that red might indeed have been somewhat open. It's so hard to tell with these weak cards. Temper is pretty good, in my experience though, so it would be a signal in my book.
p2p2: I don't know what you don't like about mender?
p2p3: I prefer valor over a green 6-drops. There are plenty of those.
p2p8: I don't know why last breath gets so little love. It's removal and kill a few pesky things for cheap.
Frankly, with phalanx leader and rider being double-white and one-hundred-handed one requiring riple white, I don't think I'd splash for scholar and spiteful. OTOH, for a splash... Xenagos?
I agree with pierrebai that the Vulpine Goliath isn't the pick P2P3, but knowing you're going to splash black I would have picked the Scholar over the valor. I love that card though.
Also Scholar is much better if you are black-splashing-white than the other way around. When he really takes over is when you can use him to sink 6/9 unused end of turn mana into a 4/6 point life swing.
I didn't really notice I had both double green and double white cards in my low curve. It certainly isn't ideal and splashing in those conditions isn't the best either.
I agree that Scholar is better in black splashing white, but, from the games I played, it still did the job well.
P1P2 It's true that I didn't pass any white card in P1P1 and taking the shieldmate here would pretty much cut white again (except for God Favored General which I don't believe is that good in general).
P1P4 I also have trouble deciding between the two. If I had taken the shieldmate P1P2, my pick (or the sun guide) is probably the right pick. However, now that I think about it, since I only took a white card P1P1 and Satyr Nyx-Smith is possibly better than both skirmisher and sun guide, I believe I should have taken it. (I also didn't think volley was playable, thanks for pointing out it is)
P1P6 I like swordwise quite a bit. 3 power for 2 is very aggressive. However, as you point out, it's double green. I'm happy with my choice, especially that I already have a tromper. Though, if I had known I'd take double white cards later on, I would have taken the tromper instead.
P1P7 I agree, Temper is very good. Reveler is, well, an ok two drop.
P2P2 I don't see much value in gaining back a card from the graveyard. So I pretty much see the mender as a 4/3 for 5, which is so-so. As I progress as a magic player, I'll probably realise that getting card(s) back from the graveyard is good, but I'm not quite there yet.
P2P3 I can agree with taking the trick here. If I had known I'd splash black at this point I believe I would have taken the Scholar.
P2P8 I ended up with two of them anyway, so no need to prioritize them . It's true that it can be useful to get rid of some annoying creatures.
Getting a card back from the graveyard = card advantage. If it said "when this creature comes into play, draw a card" would that seem good to you? Getting something out of the graveyard is in some ways better (since you can choose what you are getting back) and in some ways worse (since if you have nothing (or nothing you want) in the graveyard it doesn't do anything). It obviously gets better if you have ways to put things in the graveyard like commune with the gods, returned centaur, erebos' emissary, etc.
It's also worth noting that it gets enchantments. Not hugely relevant in this deck but it can be pretty important with ordeals, the enchantment artifacts, etc.
