Some friends are creating a competitive league, each player gets to pick 15 combined boosters from any combination of standard sets (including Amonkhet) and we all play each other round-robin style.
I've been out the game for a few years so I'm not recently familiar with the standard different combos and playstyles, strong commons and uncommons in each set - what sets are dominant in standard given this limited selection? We only get 15 boosters + basic lands, so no starter cards.
If you crack open a banned card, are you allowed to play it?
If so, I'd just go 15 Kaladesh. At Rare, Smuggler's Copter is going to be incredibly strong in limited play while also having a decent chance of being able to pull one. Who knows, maybe even 2. You'll have a huge leg up on you competition as it goes into any color deck.
If not, I'm not sure what I would go for. Possibly SOI and EMN? Werewolves or Vamps can be pretty good in limited.
We're not using banned cards, if you pull a banned one you get to pull a rare from an extra booster.
Any POV on which decks have the strongest colorless cards? I think the name of the game might be flexibility over strategy. I was thinking OGW based on it's big colorless rares, but I'm worried they'll be too hard to get onto the battlefield in this format
15 Amonkhet. Amonkhet has one of the most bomb dense rare slots I've ever seen and you'll be able to run even the double off-colored mana ones with Gift of Paradise. Trials are also fantastic, particularly the Jund colored ones, and with that many packs I would expect at least 3, plus all the cartouches you could ever want for bouncing and reusing them. In the event you whiff on a large number of rares Amonkhet is incredibly fast and you will probably have the option of just flattening everyone with r/x aggro.
I could see something like 15 SoI for Hinterland Logger beats or 10 AER + 5 KLD for u/r improvise working, but I would run pure Amonkhet.
