So my LGS will be drafting MM17 this weekend. To ensure people will be able to get as many packs as they want, the shopowner is selling packs at MSRP and not doing a prize payout, in addition to selling boxes directly. (Which would normally be a simple pack per win at most smaller events.) I completely understand his logic on selling at MSRP and I'd probably do the same.
So some players will be buying boxes and some will draft and others will do both. Among the players who draft, most are really excited to play with the awesome archetypes or 4C+ decks possible. However there are a few players(3-4) who will go through the draft round and then drop out without playing. We understand they are money drafting and heck we are all heading in hoping to get good trade value or a sweet modern card we need for our decks, so no judgement.
But when you draft and dash, you leave the rest of the players in a bind. Either there is an odd number of players and someone has to get a bye (with no prize payout) and stand around bored OR you leave the group with a smaller even number of players to match up with. The dedicated drafters get a little upset with this cause it leaves us with awkward matchups.
So my question is this: How can we discourage draft and dash or encourage them to stay. Again for this event we won't be doing a prize payout, and I'm sure the owner will not want to do anything extreme like banning players. I hope there is something simple and positive out there that other LGS do.
Since the shop doesn't want to use a stick, then the only tool left is the carrot; in other words, prize support. Even if it were a small amount, it would be incentive enough for most to stay, and a small bonus for those who do stay while some leave.
Otherwise, I dunno, a sign? I mean, since it's presumably a keep draft, it's not like anyone is passing a blood moon (the only card I can think of that's both good value and not very playable in Limited... except Goyf, but, c'mon, no one is passing that.) The fake-drafters would be just as well off buying packs for themselves.

Money drafting this set without bothering to play is pretty dumb. All of the value is concentrated in to a small handful of really expensive cards and no one is going to pass you a fetch anyway - especially when there's no incentive to actually try hard to win. Unless you get really lucky, you're going to lose lots of money almost every draft. If you draft for max value you might do a tiny bit better than just straight up buying boosters but buying boosters at MSRP isn't a brilliant move to begin with. If people are really dumb enough to do this, try rare redrafting?
Sounds like your store owner is really stingy. One Toronto store did $30 drafts with $30 store credit for the winner all weekend. And that's Canadian money, we typically pay more for packs here. Offering drafts at MSRP with no prize support for the launch event is brutal. Especially since MM2017 doesn't seem to be living up to the hype and there's another wave at distributors and the prices of boxes online are already dropping below MSRP.
What we've been doing at my LGS for Masters drafts is allowing everyone to have 2 first picks from each pack. That way if anyone opens a money foil and a money rare, they can keep both without having to drop out, and if you open junk you at least get to draft the two best cards from the pack for your deck. Sucks that your shop's offering zero prize support, but this would at least give money drafters less reason to drop out and screw up the draft for everyone else.
