So at many SEALED events I like to be on the draw if I do not have a hyper aggressive deck. What is your opinion on AER Sealed. The format seems faster than KLD. Would you like to play or to draw first?
Favourite Deck: Elves (Modern & Legacy)
Standard: New Perspectives Combo
Modern: GW Hatebears | Death and Taxes | Eldrazi and Taxes | Abzan Liege | Abzan Company
Commander: The Gitrog Monster (Combo) | Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper (Control) | RIP Leovold Sultai (Elvestorm, no unfair locks) | Mono G (Yisan or Titania)
Tiny Leaders: Too many decks to keep track of
Pauper: RIP UR Drake | Mono B | GBx Goodstuff | Jund "Melira"
In playing Limited for many years, it's been common for me to always play. I think I can count on one hand the times I've chosen to draw. The mild tempo advantage given to the person on the play is almost always better than the reactionary advantage and extra card of the person going n the draw.
In Kaladesh and Aether Revolt, this is doubly so. The power of this set is quite insane. Being able to swing with your bomb uncommons first is a recipe for success. This is why I also like the 1/3 mana dork at common. Powering out those 4 drops an entire turn earlier is backbreaking.
Drawing in Sealed may have been correct more than a decade ago when creatures were way worse, card advantage cards were more common and you had more ways to come back and regain the lost tempo; but turn 2-4 is so important in modern limited that starting off on the back foot against most decks could put you into such a bad position that you die with a bunch of cards in hand. The only time I think I'd still draw is if I was in a control vs control match-up where I can reasonably expect both players to empty their hands during the game.
unknown opponent -- 100% play. You are allowed to play trains in sealed, and T2 2/x T3 Renegade Freighter will kill you. I had a decent midrange deck get completely rolled by BR aggro in AER sealed.
The only exception would be a G2 or G3 where it's a known attrition match.
