Just wondering if anyone at any prerelease managed to win a game with, or substantially due to, Soulfire Grand Master repeatedly buying back a spell. If so, what was the spell?
Grandmaster has a huge target on his head so he's almost always the first to die. In any case, I played Jeskai tempo where I pretty much want the game to end before getting to 7 lands. His lifelinking spells ability was much more relevant with my sandblast and burn away.
Well, i cast arcbond after chumpblocking a 5/5 with grand master to wipe the board (he had 3 creatures and i had only him) gaining 25 life in the process
Most of the time it was an Ajani's Sunstriker, but in my first game of Round 1 I basically locked my opponent with 7 lands in play and Jeskai Charm and Cancel in hand.
I won my first Pre-release game with Soulfire Grand Master, Jeskai Banner, and Pyrotechnics. It was the only time in 11 games that I think I was able to buy back any spell.
Ended up going 4-0-1 in Matches. Mostly thanks to Mob Rule, Dragon-Style Twins, and Goblin Heelcutter. Saving Sandblast for their bombs.
In our two headed giant prerelease we won the finals with a whisk away repeatedly being bought back. They conceded.
I did the same thing with Whisk Away! He has the white siege, but it didn't matter, he couldnt stick creatures long enough, or draw any new cards, so lifelink raced it.
I won multiple games by holding back Soulfire until my opponent used up their removal, then buying back a spell each turn (usually Bathe in Dragonfire).
At one point I had 7 mana, Soulfire, and both Whisk Away and Crippling Chill in hand. As soon as my opponent realized he could no longer attack or block without being locked out of the game, I used Chill instead. Eventually he drew into Mastery of the Unseen which allowed him to spend 4 mana to see new cards even after I Whisked Away each turn. Then he dropped Abzan Ascendancy which made it problematic to trade with or kill his creatures because I was at a very low life total with no fliers. Then he drew Citadel Siege, which might be the best rare in the set. After barely staying at parity for a few turns, and being forced to cast multiple spells without buyback, I drew my sideboarded Erase, and exiled all three of his enchantments. He died a few turns later.
One match I got my opponent to conded when I started casting Crippling Chill with Buyback. I also got to play Sandblast withbuyback but unfortunatly my Grand Master got killed after the first time. Overall tough the lifelink for spells was the more important as I head double Sandblast along with double Cunning Strike.

Choose target creature. Whenever that creature is dealt damage this turn, it deals that much damage to each other creature and each player.
Don't think you're supposed to have gained life off of Arcbond? Not calling you out, I'm just curious.

You're right that Grandmaster dealt the damage, not Arcbond, but Grandmaster also has lifelink!
Ah, alright. Felt as though I was missing something, haha.
it was glorious
