I've been playing Magic since Revised, but somehow or other have never booster drafted until recently. I have been giving Vintage Masters a crack online, and after 4 drafts, have a dismal 4-11 record.
Now, in Constructed and Sealed Deck I am usually pretty decent; I would say I am an above average player, not great certainly but I win more than I lose. In fact, I'm known to be better in Sealed than in Constructed, and in the past 3 Sealed events I've attended I've gone 9-3. I have read articles on booster draft, and have tried to follow the rules for BREAD, and have tried to draft Vintage Masters archetypes, but with little success.
So I am asking for advice. I think my main problem is working out what to pick in pack 1. I usually follow BREAD in pack 1, but often find myself cut off from the colours I started drafting. Can anyone offer some tips or tricks for improving?
Also, I think you might want to try another format than Vintage Masters draft. I've never drafted it, but to my understanding, it takes a fair amount of competence (as far as drafting, I mean). If you're starting fresh, try out a core set draft (if there is one), or try some Theros block draft. That should help.
It takes time to get good at drafting. I've been drafting since Zendikar and I still find myself faltering every now and then. It'll take time, but it's fun and rewarding. Welcome to drafting, my friend. I wish you the best of luck.
Also, if you think you're getting cut in pack one, be willing to jump ship during the first pack. Abandoning your first 3-4 picks can be painful, but if the color isn't open, you'll get rewarded for switching for the rest of the pack, and in pack 3.
edit - Also, agreed the VM is not a very friendly format for jumping into draft.
