At FNM on Friday I was playing BW midrange and my opponent was UG fatties+tempo spells. I had lost the first game, but the second game was looking pretty good- I had a Serra Angel, a Griffin Protector, a Duty-Bound Dead and an Arbor Elf (from a Switcheroo he had used earlier) and he had a Pacifismed Silklash Spider and a Timberpack Wolf. I figured I had things almost locked up... and then he cast Spelltwine! He used the Switcheroo in his graveyard to give me the useless spider, while taking the angel and I happened to have a Murder in my graveyard, which he used to kill the Griffin Protector.
Serra Angel and Griffin Protector were basically dead anyway, weren't they?
Unless that Arbor Elf he passed away was his only way to make GG, in which case Silklash Spider might not have been usable yet. Waiting to topdeck another Forest might have been too slow.

After 60-70 4x AVR seals, I finally got the live the dream. The same dream that made me lose my first ever game of AVR... still surprised it took me this long to get there, but then a went double down:
Bam! 51 damage to the face. Fortunately, he didn't have terrifying presence. I think I'd have filed for reimbursement on ground of improper flavor if he had. How can a mob of 7/7 raging peasant and a 10/9 fervent crusader be afraid of anything? They got two commanders joining them!
I am playing BUG silliness with Jace and Garruk, he has BG
game 3,
he is at 14, i am at 1. he has tormented soul, tormented soul+mark of the vampire tapped. I have stuffy doll, sentinel spider, sentinel spider (previously switcherood from him), bats. he has one swamp open
i alpha strike and titanic growth the bat for exactly lethal damage..... he plays the instant speed black 2/2 to chump block for the win. i cheered for the awesome of it even though i lost

If you did it in the declare blockers step, you just win
Just noticed my error... it was a Sentinel Spider, not a Silklash Spider that had been Pacifismed. Would not have been a very exciting pwn if it were the latter.

I started doing 4pack sealed with AVR and started off very strong with 2 3-0s and like 4 2-1s. Then I went 1-2 FOUR times in a row. Lost everything I made and completely demoralized. 4pack AVR is absolutely ridiculous, I don't know what I was thinking. So many crazy games happen.
On topic though, I did manage to get double dreadwaters and stolen goods in my sealed. 3-0d that time without an issue lol. Many games I was dead on my opps next turn and I just cast double dreadwaters and win.
I am 0-1 in games for Round Two of a 4322 Sealed M13.
I am at 1 life. My opponent is at 9 life.
My opponent has an army of tiny creatures, most of which include the keyword Exalted. Three of those tiny creatures are untapped, as insurance against my two red 4/4 monsters, one of which is wearing a Red Power Ring.
I draw Chandra's Fury, and carry forward to win the tournament.
Man, that feels good. Usually, I'm on the receiving end.
Really fell in love with tapping islands and Mind Sculpting people to death recently.
So I get paired up against that U/G player and go to work on his library. Vedalken Entrancer and Harbor Serpent (me: 3 Islands, he: 1) keep his guys from attacking. Then, he drops Jace. ARGH! Can't Essence Scatter! Don't have my Negate! Need a solution! Need ... wait, didn't he just play an island?
Serpent gets the munchies, kills off the walker and, two turns later, the opponent.
Return to Ravnica pre-release. I play Azorius, got an atrocius pool. Playing vs Selesnya.
First game of last match before dropping. I got three 2/2 and 2/3 flyers out and an armory guard with vigilance. I've been dropping my opp by 6 point chunks and I'm declaring my attackers for the final strike. He plays the overload izzet cards that taps all my guys. I play voidwielder On his turn, he attacks with everything, pump one unblocked guy for letal. I play swift justice on my voidwielder to gain life and survive (and win next turn). He syncopates it. All off a single blue source.
Last game, last match before dropping. I mulligan to 5 and fall too much behind to recuperate. When I finally get my Archon of the Triumvirate on the field, he has the detain 2/1 guy to get past it and kill me.
There was some irony (or worse) to dying to blue or Azorius cards.
Signalling is like farting: it's a natural thing that helps people avoid being where you are, and if you try to do it deliberately, things turn to crap fast.
Quote from Hardened »
I hereby found the American Chapter of the Zealots of Semantics. All glory to The Curmudgeon.
I've played dozens of drafts online, but one recent one in particular still haunts me. I'm playing a mono green deck with goodies, a couple serra spiders, silklash spider, double rancors, and shenanigans with roaring primadox + elvish visionary, mwonvoli beastmaster, acidic slime and beetle. My opponent is playing a Blue/Green milling deck with some nastiness. He's got talrand, talrands invocation, auramancer guy, auger of bolas, sleep, at least 2 vedalkin entrancers, trade post, and sands of delirium. If he has a jace, it wouldn't surprise me, but I hadn't seen it yet.
This is second game, after I got railed with sands of delirium and double mind sculpts. So, the setup to the second game is pretty simple, and it's at a stall, but at the boiling point. I've got a centaur courser, an arbor elvish, elvish visionary, a yeva's forcemage and a primal huntbeast with a rancor on it. I also have my bomb in play. He's got trading post with no qualms about making chump blockers. He's also got fog bog bank, a kraken hatchling, two vedalkin entrancers, and an augur of bolas. A whole lot of toughness over there, and I'm running out of cards in my deck.
So, I also have a primordial hydra out. It's at 20/20, but I don't dare attack with it yet. The previous game he used two encrusts on my guys, and this game I haven't seen either yet, and he has several cards in hand thanks to a divination last turn, and he has a sleep already in the yard. Next turn he will be critical mass and I will run over everything with it before I get decked in 3 turns
I see him tapping a lot of mana, and I assume the worst, jace (which would be enough to deck me right away), or perhaps he's enrusting everything.
No, he does something unexpected. He throws out stuffy doll. Then, he uses prey upon, targeting it and my primordial hydra. Instant 20 to my dome, just like that.
My jaw dropped, but that was one of the awesomest kills ever, better than 100+ life with ajani, or double reverbate with a chandra in play.
Playing two-head giant. I'm Izzet splashing black. My deck has all the removal for ever. My team mate is golgari. He drew a lot of cards of inspiration.
Anyway match one, I keep a five land thoughtflare and something else. Opponent plays turn 1 Rakdos Cackler, turn 2 Thrill-kill assassin (both unleashed). I feeling good as both those cards aren't really good in two-headed.
I draw land, land, land, land, Pithing Needle. Cast thoughtflare, drawing land, land, land, land. By the end of the game I drew 16 of my 17 lands. Hardest I have mana flooded ever.
I had 1 game where my opponent is at 30 something, and I slamed Collective Blessing to hit him down to 5, then he have a Golgari Charm manage to get rid of it -.-...however I still got that game but a small card to get rid of a huge bomb like that is just "pwned"....
I have a Remedy in hand, and was considering blocking and preventing damage, I was trying to rack my brains to remember what happens when a 'band' of attackers are blocked by a group of creatures when one has banding, I know normally banding lets you assign damage, but couldn't remember what happened when both sides have banding.
After 30 seconds or so, I figured I would just block, cast Remedy and see what happens. I declare both creatures to be blocking the band, the opponent casts Lava Storm in response I cast Remedy, preventing 2 to the River Boa and 3 to the Benalish Infantry, damage is assigned and in the end his Healer dies and I don't lose anything.
I really hope they decide to bring back Banding in M14, such a simple to use and understand mechanic, lol.
In other PWNED plays during MVW, consider the following series of plays.
My turn 1: Play land
Opp Turn 1: Play land
My Turn 2: Play land, random 2 drop
Opp turn 2: Play land, play 2 drop or pass
My Turn 3: Empyrial Armor on creature, attack for 6.
Keep in mind that card is a COMMON, my god there are some stupid commons in sets back then.
I was in an M13 draft, and had drafted a red-green deck with Slumbering Dragon. I had gotten it out mid game, but I had gotten a little behind, mostly before it hit the board. At the current board state, he had a Serra Angel and 5 random 2/2 creatures he has played over the last two turns while poking down my life total with the angel. I had two forests and two mountains, along with a few cards in hand, and a Slumbering Dragon with three counters on it. He decides to swing with everything for the win.
I played Magmaquake for two after the dragon triggers go on the stack.
Dragon becomes a 12/12, eats the angel. All his creatures die, resulting in a 6 for 1. Game ends two turns later as he has no outs to the dragon.
In the finals of sealed, I'm playing a sick Rakdos deck and am starting to amass an army on the side of the board. After Mind Rotting him, all he has is an Axebane Guardian. That's when he goes Sphere of Safety, Collective Blessing, Collective Blessing, Judge's Familar. Yeah, it's rather hard to win when you're staring down a 7/7 Mega-Owl, a 6/9 Wall, and it costs 4 (he'd Arrested an earlier guy) for each creature to attack. I scooped when he followed that up with Azorius Keyrune.
So I sit down for round 2, and the guy leads with a turn 1 Codex Shredder. I'm thinking, "Hm, that's a peculiar choice. Maybe he's using it for late-game recursion?"
A few turns later, he flashed in an Izzet Staticaster and picked off my Fencing Ace, thus rendering the 1-toughness creatures in my hand useless. He follows this up with a Runewing, followed by Destroy the Evidence.
Once he plays Chronic Flooding, I'm thinking to myself, "No... There's no way he's playing..." After the second Chronic Flooding hits the table, I realize...
"OH DEAR GOD
I still won the match, but he was close to decking me out in games 2 and 3. I won game three the very turn after he had cracked Codex Shredder to recur his Psychic Spiral.
I was talking to him throughout the match, and he told me that since his draft had already paid for itself (Niv-Mizzet and Deathrite Shaman), he figured he would just troll and try to force the best archetype ever.
Never before have I had so much sincere and utter respect for a Magic player.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
MtGO Cube draft. Surprisingly, my really quite good UBr deck is in the 0-2 bracket. Even more surprisingly, my opponent has a ramp deck with Gaea's Cradle, Awakening Zone, Tooth and Nail, Ulamog and Kozilek with Sneak Attack backup that wouldn't seem out of place at 0-2. But his bad luck holds out... finding himself hit with an EOT unmorphed Silent Specter after he declines to cast anything into my untapped 3UU he then goes for Phyrexian Metamorph...
...see attachment for how that turned out! Mmm... card advantage!
(Then the third game he happened to stall on three land plus Awakening Zone when I just happened to have drawn Nevinyrral's Disk and the Sinkhole I'd boarded in for his Gaea's Cradle. He drew and played back up to three land and I resolved Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and put him back at two Forests. Unluckiest player ever!)

In 4x AVR sealed. Got a weak pool with only demonic rising as a bomb. So I'm playing RB aggro / rising. My third match opponent is playing WU. The annoying variety, with a lot of life gain and card draw (via the soulbound tandem lookout and seraph of dawn, and flicker and peel from reality trickery). No way I can win on card advantage or life total. So, I sideboard into the milling strategy with UR: reforge the soul, otherworld Atlas and dreadwaters. He beats me down, drawing cards off the lookout and a griff nicely while I accumulate counters on the tome. In his last turn before killing me, I activate the tome in his end step. Then activate it on my turn and play dreadwater. See the mistake? Yeah, I should have played dreadwater and then activate the tome. On his upkeep, he plays Vanishment on his dude to have a card to draw. Doh! I tell him I realized too late I played my stuff in the wrong order. He attacks with everything and deal me exact lethal for the win. Fortunately, I had the fleeting distraction to survive and then actually win on my turn. He was kinda annoyed to lose like this.
So, hum, how to almost pwn oneself. (I won the final game by milling again, this time in the right order. Reforge the soul playable? I wouldn't have thought so.)
Playing Rackdos splashing U, and my opponent is Azorius. Ground is completely flooded with stuff and my opponent is hiding behind his Sphere of Safety (a good three of my creatures are under paralyzing grasp with a reasonable life total (12ish). He's slowly picking me off with some 1/3 flyers while his Fencing Ace with Knightly Valor completely shuts down any hope of attacking.

I was playing a Rakdos deck that was forced to chump a Loltroll with every creature I drew. He's slowly picking away at me with his 1/1 lifelinker. I had just ran out of creatures. He has 11 life, I'm at 12. My only card in hand is a traitorous instinct. I pass the turn. He draws a land. Then pulls all the scavenge creatures out of his graveyard. I'm sweating this. I counted the damage (which also reminded him they were in there) and it comes to exactly 11 damage. He's deciding where to put the counters and piles them all on the troll. I actually sighed and reach for my life die. He full swings into me to drop me to 1 and goes up to 12. I traitorous his troll and win.
