I know Critical Hit has a Thursday night legacy league (sadly Thursday doesn't work for me), but other then that I know of nowhere else to play in the state.
I am desperate to play some Legacy (or Vintage) and would gladly drive to any part of the state, or to the closer parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin or Illinois for anything on the weekend. On weekdays it would probably have to be within a couple hours drive from Cedar Falls.
Iowa City, which is where Critical Hit is I think, is the only place I know of that does regular Legacy tournaments (which is unfortunate). There is no Legacy in Cedar Falls. I went to college there and come back occasionally to play at Limited Edition Comics and the area is all limited and standard events. I think Battlezone Games in Cedar Rapids does legacy once a month on Sundays but you would have to check their website/Facebook group. I live in West Des Moines now and really wish there was some sort of Legacy community around here as well.
If you are willing to drive to Madison, WI there is a robust Legacy community there at MoxMania. MoxMania has Legacy on Thursday at 6:30 PM and Saturday at noon.

Have you ever heard of The Core in Cedar Falls? They will have Legacy about every 3 months and I know that on Monday nights at Perkins in Waterloo people will playtest Legacy as well. Just show up and a group will be camped out.
I just played in a GPT at Cedar Rapids over the weekend (10/26), but the legacy is very inconsistent. I have gone to tournaments and only three people have showed up. Pretty disappointing. The GPT had 20 people this weekend though with people from Iowa City, Dubuque, Cedar Falls, and Cedar Rapids.
Minneapolis has a shop called 'Monster's Den' that has big legacy tournaments once a month with good prize support as well for another option. 11/2 is the next legacy tournament.
@PretendObject - Have you ever played at the Mayhem in Des Moines? I know that at least a couple of people have legacy decks and are interested, but events just don't seem to happen ever. I also saw that Jay's Hobby and Cd's had a tournament over the weekend.
Hi!
I actually just got back from Critical Hit tonight. Thursdays aren't working out as well as hoped. There's been a lot of no-shows and the event isn't firing most weeks
I had a talk with the owner while I was there, and the owner's open to changing the date, and taking it off the current league set up, etc.
So my question to you is, if Thursday doesn't work for you, what day will? We need to find a day that works for everyone, because as it stands there might as well not be a legacy scene in IC.
Sorry Thursdays stopped working out at Critical Hit
For me personally. Weekends work best to play in Iowa City at Critical Hit. I couldn't do weekly (two hours one way from Ames), but I would be game for a monthly at the least! As long as they correctly list it on their website or if it was advertised on here. It's too far to travel for it not to fire due to numbers.
Also if it was broadcast on here or even The Source we might be able to get a head count for numbers to anticipate? Or even get a better turnout perhaps?

Thanks for the feedback! I'll pass that along, and post back here if there's a change in schedule.
I'll definitely try getting the word out on the source too, and hopefully we can get something going!
I don't know how open they would be to the idea, but maybe we can run a monthly in addition to the current league set up, but that might just end up being overkill.
1/month or 1/quarter might be something that can work for most people. I live in DSM and have one weekend off per month that I'd be willing to roll out to IC if necessary.
Some good news from CHG the other day, there's a strong chance the monthly Legacy tournaments will be coming back. No idea when they'll start up again, but hopefully within the next month or so.
In addition to legacy, we may see some monthly tournaments for other formats as well.
Limited Edition Comics in Cedar Falls has recently started doing a weekly legacy tournament on Saturdays. I believe it's Legacy @ 10:30am followed by a Modern tournemnet @ 2:00pm
What's the turnouts for those tournaments? I might be able to make it out once in a while, but if no one shows then the trip is a little far for me to try and make it every weekend
Yeah, if enough people are coming out for these I would be up for driving up to check it out maybe once a month or something. It will be hard to find the time to come up every week.
Also in Des Moines Jay's Hobby is having a legacy tournament on Saturday Dec. 7th and Mayhem Comics is having a legacy tournament on Dec. 29th. Both of these tournaments allow for 10 proxy cards.
JAYS LEGACY TOURNAMENT:
Dec 7th, 12 (noon)
7$ entry free, two packs a player and store credit to top finishers based on players entered.
MAYHEM LEGACY TOURNAMENT:
Dec 29th, 12 (noon)
Ten card proxy!
Entry Fee: $10
Prizes: First Place gets 4 sealed Onslaught Starter Decks, Second gets 2 sealed Onslaught Starter Decks, and 3/4 get one Sealed Onslaught Starter deck. If we get more than sixteen players we will also give out 150% the cash entries and 100% of the store credit entries back in store credit prizes.

In taylorville, IL they have a monthly legacy tourney with great prizes. It is at arena games or midwestmagic. He usually does 20 dollar entry with 2 to 4 duals for first and duals down to 4th with boxes down to 8th.
Legacy at L.E. comics has only been going for three weeks. First time they had it turnout was eight players. I went again this last weekend and it was probably a dozen people. Hopefully it keeps growing. No tournament this coming weekend but it will resume as normal after that. Probably should mention that you can have up to ten proxies also.
I see that it stops when I have a Saturday off! You LE guys must be nervous (after I finished an impressive 1-3 2 weeks ago). I play at either place in Cedar Falls that has legacy. I also try to go to Iowa City or Cedar Rapids when they have legacy. Other formats I play at The Core.
There will be a legacy tournament at the Core in Cedar Falls on Saturday, January 14th with dual lands for prizes. $20 entry. Spread the word.
Went to Jay's over the weekend for the 10 proxy legacy event and we had 18 peeps show up! Not a bad turnout I thought.
For archtypes we had...
Punishing Maverick, Esper True Blade, TES, Slivers, Stifle-Nought, Pox, Sneak and Show, Nic-Fit, Dark Maverick, and some other rogue decks floating around.
Also, for folks up in Cedar Falls. The Core is having a legacy tournament with duals for prizes on January 12th.
I also have heard that on January 4th Critical Hit Games is going to have the monthly legacy tournament. It's not on the calendar, but hopefully it will be added soon for confirmation

18 is not bad, hopefully they do another soon. I hope to be able to make it to Critical Hit on the 4th.
I made a mistake my first post, the 12th is the correct date for the Core's legacy for lands tournament. Thanks for posting that along with the facebook link.
Once a month, usually the 2nd Sunday, at Trademart, in Moline, Illinois, there is a Legacy tournament, and for the last 2 it's been $10 entry with 100% prize payout. I'm not certain when the next one is, due to the holiday season, but if you contact the store, the owner should tell you.
If people around the area can be bothered to show up, it's a good scene.

Yeah no problem! Sorry to steal your thunder. I missed that you mentioned this tournament in your previous posting. I am pretty pumped about the amount of legacy suddenly picking up in Iowa though and excited to get to this tournament.

I found this after googling the shop name... http://magic.tcgplayer.com/maxpoint/events.asp?ID=474&storeid=136 which I might be tempted to try and attend. Although Moline would be a bit of trek for me. I bet duelers that live in Eastern Iowa could ramble on over across the Mississippi once a month.

My name is David, and i run the mtg events at the Core in CF. One of my players told me he was sharing our event with you guys so i thought I'd pop in and say hi and see if you guys had any questions?
Any new updates and such will be posted there, also if anyone has any questions, asking there would get the quickest reply from me.
We have 3 duals set aside for the top 3 players (based on 8 people participating). If we get at least 12 people (very likely, our last event had 12) we can hand out duals to the top 4 players. All prizes will be exchangeable for store credit, so if you don't want the one offered to your position you are more than welcome to buy another dual land we have in stock (or anything else in the store). The prize payout will also increase with each participation. All entry fees will be added to the prize pool in their entirety.
I'll also mention that at least 1 of our L1 Judges will be there as well.
That should cover the info for this event, and I'll add that we try to host a legacy event about every 3 months.
Limited Edition, also in CF has been running legacy events every Saturday (as others have noted). I went to the one last Saturday. They charge $5, start around 10:30-11ish, and you can use up to 10 proxies for cards you don't own.
When i was there, there were 8 of us (with a few of their regulars missing), with a pretty even mix of people who seemed to know what they were doing, and some that are getting into it. They did 3 rounds of swiss and handed out 8 packs to the top 4 players. I don't believe they ever do single elimination rounds, they just go until one person is undefeated and hand out prizes based on ranking.
They also run Modern events afterwards, also for $5. I don't think they let people use proxies for that, but I'm not 100%. I didn't bring my modern deck so i wasn't able to stay.
What's the likelihood of there being another tournament like this at the core?
I'd really love to come, and the prize offering is awesome, but that weekend might be a little awkward for me to make the trip out there.
I will ask David about it in case he hasn't seen your post. I think enough people are interested in these types of events that they could get a semi regular thing going and I'll keep pushing for them to create more events like this one.
Hey guys. I am the TO at Jay's CD and hobby on the SE side of Des Moines and i just wanted to invite you to come to another Legacy tournament on Jan the 25th, at noon. It will be 10 card proxy, 7$ entry and 2 packs a player prize support plus store credit for the top finishers. I knew that some who came found out about us last time this way so i hope the word gets out and we have another great turnout
In case you didn't see the date/time, the Core's Legacy for Dual Lands tournament in Cedar Falls is at 1pm this coming Sunday, Jan 12th! Hope to see some of you there for the best format in magic (hint: its not modern)
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone from Mason City, Ames, Iowa City, Platteville, and everywhere else that made the trip today. I enjoyed talking to and playing legacy with everyone. Thanks David for making it happen. The Core says they are having another one of these in April, I will post the date for it when I have it.
Also, Battlezone in Cedar Rapids is having a legacy for lands February 22nd I believe.
