So my question is maverick specifically a GW deck? I keep seeing posts of peoples Maverick lists that have blue or black in them, which to me means that they are at that point Bant or The rock.
Also isn't Maverick basically just the evolution of new horizons that someone decided to rename??
I feel like Maverick is one of those decks thats core can be used to flesh out in many new directions. From its creation I believe it was defined mostly as G/W, but since then many have splashed alternate colors to shore up weaknesses, as we all do from time to time. A recent example was Caw-Blade in Standard, where the deck was willing to splash B or R to shore up its MU against itself, then the U/W version preyed upon those changes. In general, I define Maverick as G/W, but at the same time you can define the deck by its core, which would allow color variations with the same name. I guess it's all up on your definition of it
I would mainly agree with Bant and Maverick being the similar ones, as RUG and Rock play very differently, unless you are speaking of a list other than NO RUG. Bant is essentially Maverick with a counterspell suite. Rock usually plays without the Mystic package and plays discard, which seems a major change. NO is more combo, plays burn, loses KotR and Mystic, and gains Jace. I agree on Bant though.
There are 4 decks that are all very similar:
RUG (Red, Blue, Green)
Bant (White, Blue, Green)
Junk (Black, White, Green)
Maverick (White, Green)
Maverick is quite different from the others. It does not pack much disruption (though some have GSZ and/or Fauna Shaman toolbox hate), and it is much more of an aggro deck than the others.
I've recently begun running a Maverick deck and would best describe it as a G/W utility deck. Every creature in the deck should fill a role and be able to find an answer to any situation by using GSZ or sneaking something in with an Aether Vial. Not a big fan of Goyf in the deck because he's just a beatstick, a sometimes large and intimidating beatstick, but nothing more than said beatstick. (Just once more for fun, beatstick.)
Played it last week at a small legacy tournament and got pounded by Storm and Cephalid Breakfast. Should've been more aggressive with my mulligans in retrospect.
isn't 4 vials and 4 GSZ an auto-include in maverick? I think the reason why maverick is getting alot of plays is because it beats merfolk quite easily, and from an scg tourney thingy report i saw, merfolk still has one of the biggest turnouts. sadly, it just has big difficulty versus combo/storm decks, decks which merfolk has a pretty good MU. its quite funny actually how does maverick fare against zoo? or is the NO-Prog package brought in for zoo?
I've been running 4 vial 3 GSZ, haven't really played the NO version because I hate not having any protection for it. Without NO the zoo matchup has been almost 50/50 for me so far, but if I can't keep the pressure on him (i.e. Moms and KotRs shutting him down), he can usually outlast me. No-Prog against Zoo would end the match almost immediately if you can keep him from blasting your sac target.
As for fish, a resolved vial on my side of the field usually means this one's in the bag. Get scryb ranger online with any other utility creature and this one's a blowout.

Did you just post the same thing twice Penatbater? As of recent, the lists seems to have flexibility of Vial due to Misstep. Yes, Maverick seems to have good MUs versus fish, along with most decks with Stoneforge Mystic. If Merfolk numbers drop due to the presence of all these decks hating on it (Zoo, Maverick, U/W Stoneforge, U/B Stoneforge) combo will make a major resurgence on the meta and slaughter those decks. Then Merfolk will return to beat combo, and the cycle will restart. I would expect Maverick to be close, but maybe slightly unfavorable to Zoo. Zoo sports bigger creatures and plenty of burn to deal with Mavericks utility dorks. I may be calling that wrong, but it's how I see it.
I have drifted away from Maverick because not playing flexible disruption MD means there are some matchups that you will simply lose. For example, combo simply goldfishes you g1. GSZ and Fauna Shaman can provide some Teeg/Iona hate, but that's often too slow or not enough.
sorry, it must've error'd on my browser. what's DDFT?
DDFT is Doomsday Fetchland Tendrils, its essentially a storm combo deck that uses Doomsday piles as its engine instead of Ad Nauseum or Ill-Gotten Gains.

But whomever your commander is, Cabal Coffers is really in charge.
Is Swiftfoot Boots really that much better than Lightning Greaves? I understand that the boots allow you to put more than one equipment on a creature if you only have one creature in play, but how often is it the case that you only have one creature in play? I feel like the extra 1 investment every time you play a new creature and give it haste is a big drawback for such a little advantage.

I'm personally a big fan of vial in the deck because I can use it to flash in my dryad arbor if i was unlucky enough to draw it in the opener, get a mom around misstep (if they didn't get the vial) and then start sneaking in my utility if i have it in hand. Not to mention I like to run 3 Serra Avenger in the main.
Hey guys, been lurking thread for awhile while building the deck. I've gotta go to work but I'll make a longer post with a list and some testing results later. The question I had at the moment was what card have you guys had the most success with as graveyard hate (tormod's crypt/relic/loaming shaman)? I've only played one match vs graveyard based combo, and I blew out cephalid breakfast with a relic of progenitus. Thanks
Any thoughts/questions/whatever are welcome. It's about 5am here so I'm gonna go get some sleep now.
How's cold-eyed Selkie treating you?
The deck seems solid to me. I take it your meta is more blue heavy than most? If so, Thrun is a rather nice pick. Walks all over MUC (at least when I've used him).

I usually delineate between them according to their colors. Otherwise, card selection is pretty similar for each.

Some lists play that pile but that pile actually requires you to pass the turn before you can go off unlike some of the storm piles.
