Based on the top 8 results it seems like Punishing Maverick is the better deck. I don't really like the Punishing Fire build as well. Am I missing something? It seems like you are trading your smooth mana base and curve for the ability to play a neat trick. Am I the only one that feels this way?
I have always felt this way too. Trading a consistent mana base + creature count for the Punishing Fire/Grove synergy was not something I was comfortable with. The Punishing Fires are indeed useful for the mirror + help vs most of the creatures in RUG tempo and U/W Blade, but I would prefer to constantly drop must answer threats rather using removal.
I feel that Punishing Fire lists are more popular in the SCG opens mainly because Gerry Thompson wrote about + piloted it in the Charlotte Invitational.

I didn't realize that there was a write up on Punishing Maverick. I'm trying to build my own Maverick deck currently. I don't have enough experience with it yet to make a true judgement call but everything you pointed out so far makes sense. I always thought that consistency was more important. I thought that was one of the main reasons this deck was so good.
Quarterfinals match from SCG Open @ LA shows why Punishing Fires is irrelevant. GW has enough tools in its arsenal; diluting it with more useless removal is unnecessary.

Congrats on the top 4 finish! I thoroughly enjoyed the long, grinding second game versus the Punishing mirror. Your opponent simply drew the out he needed. Game would have been put out of reach your next turn when Batterskull connected=]
To be perfectly fair, my opponent was in his first legacy tournament, first Maverick mirror, and was inexperienced with some of the cards. He drew much much better than me, but I was keeping track of what/when to use my tricks. Some examples:
1) Depleting all his forests for Scryb Ranger/KotR
2) KEEP MOM ALIVE!
3) Bojuka Bog is a one-shot
4) Fetching Maze during combat as a means for avoiding Wasteland and still getting to use it
Basically I was on the ropes the whole game until he lost his ability to use Scryb Ranger; then he made a mistake of tapping his Mom to try to force damage through without considering Maze of Ith. That gave me the opportunity to deal with Mom, then I drew Ooze to start shrinking his KotR too.
I totally forgot about Path to Exile when I equipped Batterskull to KotR - I believe that I may have won the game if I put the 'skull on Ooze instead to bait out his removal. Another mistake I made during that game was not utilizing KotR prior to the resolution of Path to fetch Wasteland and remove his Grove. I pretty much knew he had it in his hand, - the Path really surprised me and I lost my focus.

Congratulations on fourth place. Was the CoP:Red a meta choice or something you think you will keep? I look forward to seeing the Tournament report when you get it done.
Basically, I didn't want to give up a match to Burn. I'm rather sick that the myth that Burn is a real deck is being continued. COP:Red is an attempt to squash it.

COP: red is a nice touch and I guess it doubles as an answer to PROG and other randomness but if you're goal is to hate out burn or out last the red-snappy decks I think warmth is probably better for maverick. The deck gets pretty mana hungry with all the little tricks and one-ups in my experience.

Being able to blank Progenitus was exactly the reasoning. Aegis of Honor is arguably better altogether, but doesn't stop creatures attacking.
Eh, fair enough. I'd still put COP and Warmth above the aegis though. Aegis does nothing when your creatures are getting shot down whereas the other two have applications against creatures and things not shot at your head.

What are the thoughts about adding Mirrian Crusader in the mix? With the equipment in the deck and the protection, I think it might warrant a spot in the deck. I just don't have any idea what to cut to get him in there.

Maybe over the 2 aven mindcensor slots. I'm really not a fan of those two slots anyways.
Has anyone tested maindecking 1-2 Life from the Loam? Seems good with Wasteland and Canopy.
I'm also considering sideboarding the NO package as it completely owns the mirror as well as zoo and other aggro decks. Thoughts? My only fear in this regard is running into Mindcensor.

I've ran 1 Life from the Loam in the SB for several months now, and I am loving it. It serves double duty - good against Pox decks and other control decks. An alternative for it is Crucible of Worlds; but the artifact is more vulnerable.

I want to note that I play the GW version, so Life from the Loam only has the benefit of recurring Wasteland, Canopy, and utility lands. I don't rely on Loam to keep my manabase stable.
I board it in against decks that run nearly zero basic lands that rely on tempo, such as Team America and Canadian Threshold; and also Pox that actively destroy my hand and lands.
For instance:
(RUG Tempo)
+2 Path to Exile
+1 Life from the Loam
+1 Maze of Ith
-1 Eternal Witness
-3 Qasali Pridemage

I'm building a G/W version myself. Life from the Loam is something I have been toying with. Thanks for the info.
Alright, so currently I am running 4 Stoneforge Mystics, 1 Elspeth, and 1 Sylvan Library. I'm thinking of cutting the Stoneforge count to 3, so that I can add another one of these cards.

Play on MWS? I'll play zoo. If you're right, I'll be really happy. If I'm right, you'll know you need to adjust.
My testing showed that if we don't have BS maindeck, it's really difficult to win against zoo.

We tested that in the Baltimore meta, and found Mindcensor to be better.
However, that's an easy meta swap. Crusaders are pretty insane in this deck.
