Noticed a lot of lists are running 4 Ghost Quarters over 4 Rishadan Ports. What's the main reason for this? Has anyone tried it and is it working for them?
Not happy about this first round. I know my opponent is on Omnitell, and he proceeds to do what his deck does on turn 3 both games without me being able to really interact. Kind of a poor start to the first round.
Round 2 vs Death and Taxes (2-1)
This is what I've been waiting for. With the printing of Recruiter of the Guard and Sanctum Prelate, I anticipated a LOT of Death and Taxes today (which there was). Game 1, I have a pretty decent hand, and am able to lock him out of the game with Tabernacle, multiple Mazes, and Punishing Fire/Grove. I lose game 2 to an unchecked Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Game 3, I, again, get a solid lock on my opponent, leaving him with 5 Plains, all 3 equipment on the battlefield, no cards in hand, and no creatures to attack. We go to time before he realizes there's no real way for him to win.
Round 3 vs Esper Deathblade
This matchup went about as well as one would expect. Any time he would get me close to death, I would make a Marit Lage and gain another nice 20 life cushion until he ran out of StPs. Game 2, he makes the mistake of trying to FoW a Loam cast off of a Boseiju, and proceeds to concede.
Round 4 vs Death and Taxes (2-1)
Game 1, Vial and a lot of disruption, and I am unable to catch up and lose to Batterskull beats. Game 2, I keep a sketchy hand of 6 lands and Helm of Obedience, He stars off a little slower this time, with Mother of Runes, into Stoneforge Mystic, into Prelate on 2, to which I Kozilek's Return EOT, and cast Loam on my turn, prompting him to cast Rest in Peace. I play a 5th land and Helm him for 1. Game 3 is a grindfest, but with an Exploration and Loam, and my opponent with no way to answer my GY, he loses to Marit Lage.
Round 5 vs Grixis Delver (2-1)
I keep a slow hand, and lose to double Young Pyromancer, and timely Stifles and counterspells. Game 2, I am able to keep the board relatively clear, and make a Marit Lage before he can really recover. Game 3, Turn 1 Chalice on 1, Turn 2 Wasteland, Turn 3 Wasteland, Turn 4 Loam. Opponent concedes.
Round 6 vs RUG Lands (0-0-3)
I am paired against a friend, and instead of one of us knocking the other out, we agree to ID and try to win our last round of swiss.
Round 7 vs 4 Color Loam
Game 1, he gets a lock of Chalice on 1 and 2, and kills me with a 10/10 Knight of the Reliquary. Game 2, I play a fast Marit Lage without a way for him to answer, and steal the game. Game 3, he draws his only Forest in his deck, and I Ghost Quarter/Wasteland him out of the game.
Quarterfinals vs TES Storm (2-1)
Game 1, I know what my opponent is playing, and know that there's not really much I can do to interact with what he does, but I play it out to see more cards in his deck. He kills me on Turn 3. Game 2, I Gamble on turn 1 for Trinisphere, which he ends up Duressing, but draw another on a few turns later, while my opponent has a series of unfortunate draws, and basically does nothing for the rest of the game. Game 3 is a nail biter. At no point did I really feel ahead in the game. No Chalices, no Trinispheres. My opponent casts a LOT of cantrips, but continues to draw rather poorly (possibly due to over sideboarding). Then he starts to go off, leading with triple LED and probe. He sees my hand contains the Tabernacle that I left in to combat an Empty kill, which I think he was planning on going for, as his pace of play dramatically slows down as soon as he sees it. He Ad Nauseams into a rather poor hand, and is only able to Tendrils me down to 2. On my turn I Ghost Quarter and Wasteland the rest of the lands he has left in play, and Bojuka Bog his graveyard. It had turned out, my opponent had made a mistake when casting his last Brainstorm, which locked up the game for me.
Overall, I am very happy with my performance today. Of the 68 players who attended, there were more new players than I had expected (which does say something about the interest players who have not been playing for years have for Legacy). My tech choices today for DnT were great, and I feel like I would have had a fine time against Miracles, had I played against it all day. There were a few situations today where I wished the Tranquil Thickets were Horizon Canopies, but I don't think it made THAT much of a difference. Not once did I miss Rishadan Port.
Took my last list to a GPT for GP Louisville. Only difference is that I added a Sensei's Divining Top to the MD.
Round 1 - Burn 2-1
I caught a lucky break game 1. I had a Thespian's Stage out, and top drew a Crop Rotation off the top to get DD on my opponent's turn so that I could block Swiftspear, saving myself, and then kill him on my turn. He got me game 2 with an Eidolon locking me out. Game 3 I kept a hand with the combo in it, a Mox Diamond, and a Sphere of Resistance. I was able to land a T2 Sphere which prevented him from playing an Ensnaring Bridge and he died to Marit Lage.
Round 2 - BR Reanimator 0-2
I'm not sure I can describe how bad this matchup is. We have to have Crop Rotation in our opener and hope they don't put a creature in play T1 if they're on the play.
Round 3 - D&T 2-0
I locked my opponent out Game 1 with a T1 Exploration and Molten Vortex, and assembled an EE lock on T4. Game 2 my opponent kept a 1 land Vial hand. I wasted his land and K Gripped the Vial by T2, he proceeded to draw non basic lands which did him no favors.
Round 4 - Miracles 0-2
I screwed up G1 and it cost me the game. I kept a hand with Mox Diamond, Wasteland, Tabernacle, Loam, Exploration x2, Maze of Ith. I accidentally pitched my Wasteland to the Diamond on T1 which cost me the game. I was able to quarter out my opponent's white sources and was a turn too late making Marit Lage. I died to Venser and double Snap beats. Game 2, my opponent found a timely Entreat as I was taking him down to a single white source.
Round 5 - Standstill 1-2
I took control of G1 with a Ghost Quarter and EE lock, which my opponent scooped to. Game 2 I gave away when I didn't waste my opponent's Academy Ruins and burned my last K Grip on his Crucible. Game 3 I mull'd down to 3 cards and never did anything.
I lost 2 matches to my own bad plays. It really sucks, but I just have to try not to make the same mistakes moving forward. I need to work on slowing down my play a little bit. I try to play fast to ensure we can finish the match but I end up making mistakes, especially against Miracles. I'll be playing in another GPT for Louisville December 10th along with another 1k IQ on December 11th. I'll probably cut the Top, although it was beneficial everytime I got to play it.
I'm intending on playing Lands at GP Chiba in a week or so, and was hoping for your help in deciding on a MD/SB for a fairly unknown meta? This is my current list I'm running: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/31-05-16-rg-lands/
Obviously I need to update it a bit. I'm thinking of putting in stuff like Molten Vortex and Seismic Assault for Praetor, but beyond that I'm at a bit of a loss. I have the cards for pretty much any R/G/B version, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated
Here is a list from Hori Masataka - KMC 66th. Sideboard will change something but I like this 4 Port and 1 Ghost. My meta is full of DnT and Miracles.
Sylvan Library sounds interesting like SB Nissa Worldwaker, but might change to Nissa Vital force.
3 dark depths are good, will test more to see if really needs 4th.
Horizon Canopy is better than Tranquil Thicket?
4 Exploration
4 Gamble
4 Crop Rotation
3 Punishing Fire
4 Life from the Loam
1 Manabond
1 Sylvan Library
1 Molten Vortex
4 Mox Diamond
4 Grove of the Burnwillows
4 Wasteland
4 Thespian's Stage
4 Rishadan Port
3 Dark Depths
3 Maze of Ith
2 Taiga
1 Tranquil Thicket
1 Boseiju, Who Shelters All
1 Verdant Catacombs
1 Wooded Foothills
1 Misty Rainforest
1 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
1 Glacial Chasm
1 Ghost Quarter
1 Bojuka Bog
1 Forest
Sideboard
1 Punishing Fire
3 Krosan Grip
2 Chalice of the Void
2 Pithing Needle
4 Sphere of Resistance
1 Nissa, Worldwaker
1 Karakas
1 Choke
Horizon canopy is nice since you can cast T1 exploration or something from it whereas thicket can't. Thicket doesn't use a land drop though, so each has their merits. I would much rather play vital force over Worldwaker, IMO. I'm not a fan of the punishing fire in the sideboard, seems like a wasted slot.
I liked Sylvan Lybrary with Loam and Thicket. Horizon can play around too. I really like this MD. Just will think about GC and Ports. 1 GC/4Ports or 4GC and 4th Fetchland. What you think?
About sideboard, need some upgrades. Krosan Grip I might go up to 4 and keep 1 Karakas.
How necessary is Sphere of Resistance? I saw last SCG using 4 chalices instead Sphere.
And about Tirless Tracker. Is a must have?
thanks for help
Sorry for lot of questions, Im old from Eternal Garden style, just updating after looong time =D
I like both Thicket and Canopy. I think the biggest merit for Canopy is that you don't have to tie up a green source to activate it, where Thicket requires green. This helps when you're trying to cast Loam and Punishing Fire(s). I highly recommend playing the full 4 Grips out of the side, and I personally like Sphere of Resistance over Chalice. Chalice tends to hurt us just as much as an opponent, if not more. A prime example is the Top 4 feature match from SCG Baltimore where the Lands player played a Chalice for 1 at the beginning of the game and proceeded to do nothing because he locked his own spells out that he had in hand. If you play Chalice, I think you should SB out Rotations, but again, I'm just not a fan of the Chalice in the side.
I haven't really warmed up to Trackers either. They're fantastic when they get into play, but too often they just get dredged over and end up as a dead card. I'm still on the fence about Trackers for GP Louisville.

I might cut needles from SB. And yes im kind of guy who dredge Tireless or bad gamble too =( But I liked Sylvan Library MD to help avoid this. I really liked MD configuration, besides personal doubt about GC/Port. Sideboard gonna try something like:
Sideboard
1 Molten Vortex
4 Krosan Grip
2 Chalice of the Void
4 Sphere of Resistance
1 Nissa VItal Force
1 Karakas
1 Choke
1 __________ (maybe 1 ancient grudge)
If I go 4GC MD, I try +1 Fetch (4th) and instead choke, Crucible Worlds. But I prefer splash U like ur version if gonna use crucible.
Im trying to focus Miracles, DnT, Eldrazi and BR Reanimator. Local sold out all Reanimate and Entombs.
IMO, just concede the BR Reanimator matchup for the most part. Try to mulligan for a hand with crop rotation and no Bog, but honestly without Rotation, that matchup is near unwinnable. Even with Rotation in hand, if they reveal a Chancellor that could just be enough to win them the game.
The Miracles matchup gets a lot better with the 4GQ version, as you can just Quarter out their white sources and then their only out to Marit Lage is Venser and Clique.
DnT feels to be a pretty favorable matchup, although Sanctum Prelate can definitely cause problems. The RUG version has an advantage here in that it can play around that with EE. The RG version has difficulty beating a Prelate on 2.
Eldrazi is probably one of our easiest matchups, especially with 4 GQ's. They don't play basics, so they're mana base is extremely fragile. A Wasteland, Loam, with any kind of an accelerator (Diamond or Exploration) is generally enough to beat them.
Noticed a lot of lists are running 4 Ghost Quarters over 4 Rishadan Ports. What's the main reason for this? Has anyone tried it and is it working for them?
Vs Miracles GQ is awesome. Not only does it better push you off white, it also forces a shuffles (or is a Strip Mine).
Vs MUD, Eldrazi, or Delver decks, GQ = Strip Mine. Vs decks that run two or three basics (midrange decks like Shardless, Jund, and Stoneblade, as well as Elves), GQ becomes a Strip Mine quickly. Also those decks often fetch basics first to dodge Wasteland - now they're depleting their deck of GQ rebates! 4C Loam is a little tougher because they have recursion, but if you can Bog lock them, GQ gets pretty good there too.
Vs decks that run a lot of basics (besides Miracles), GQ is worse than Port. Most notably D&T, where Port is good but Quarter is a bit of a drag. Port is also better if you don't have graveyard access (and they are running basics), or if they are running DRS.
I believe this originated as a budget option for Modo, where Ports are the most expensive card in the deck. But it turns out it has a lot of merit. I'm presently running a 3/2 split myself, might go to 2/3.
I got a question and I want to point out that I never played Lands at it is in this Primer. I play Turbo Depths. So one card came to my mind and I am curious whether it is playable in a Land build that uses Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. It is Spreading Algae. Could work with Rishadan Port. Anyone ever tried this one out?
It's cute, but wasteland and ghost quarter just do the job better, and aren't reliant on Urborg being in play. You'd also need a Rishadan Port or something to make full use of the land kill combo.
Barbarian ring is a test but it's worked out well for me so far. It can be awkward trying to activate it with a RIP in play but having a tutorable out to prelate is huge.
I like the Barbarian Ring. Not because it's good (especially not better than Punishing Fire). But: It's a land. So it would fit in lands and would even bring some space cutting the PF or Groves, but PF-Grove combo is lot better. Maybe I decide to play just Rings in casual games...
Still trying to nail down what I'm playing for sure at GP Lousiville. I'm torn between RUG Lands and RG Lands. I've had a rough go as of late playing RUG Lands, which has me thinking about making the switch. I might have to pick up a Barbarian Ring and give you list a try Sparki. I'll be going to a weekly Legacy event this Thursday and will report after.
Yeah. I recently cut helm though, as I think the D&T matchup is fine. I cut 2 trinispheres and the helm and added 3 spheres of resistance for the slightly faster combo meta like RB Reanimator. Might even start playing surgical.

I've just updated to your list, Sparki, except +1 Intuition, -1 Loam -- so a package of 2 Gamble, 3 Intuition with 3 Loam and 1 Crucible.
How many decks are you bringing the Spheres in against? ANT, Reanimator,...
I've always found myself questioning Sphere in the past and am considering Thalia and Revoker for those slots, since they are relevant in more matchups while also starting the clock vs combo.

"That's right!" shouted Vroomfondel, "we demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"
All of the 2+-of lands are either initial mana sources, payoff cards for Loam which you never want to be without, or combo pieces in case you want//need to jam Marit Lage ASAP.
What's crazy is the 4 Port 4 GQ 4 Wasteland. How did that go?
What is the point of the beseiji? Gamble and Crop roation can't be cast with it. I see little point in making Punishing Fire uncountable. Loam is the only card I can think of wanting to protect, but even then it doesn't seem like the life is worth it. If they counter loam, all it does is delay and I'm normally fine with that. Grip in the board doesn't really need the uncounterabillity, Counterbalance on 3 is the only think I can think where it matters.

Yeah. I recently cut helm though, as I think the D&T matchup is fine. I cut 2 trinispheres and the helm and added 3 spheres of resistance for the slightly faster combo meta like RB Reanimator. Might even start playing surgical.

How many decks are you bringing the Spheres in against? ANT, Reanimator,...
I've always found myself questioning Sphere in the past and am considering Thalia and Revoker for those slots, since they are relevant in more matchups while also starting the clock vs combo.

Have a few slots to fill out yet, but I just kinda want to try being a Troll with the full sets of Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, and Rishadan Port

What's crazy is the 4 Port 4 GQ 4 Wasteland. How did that go?
Overall record: 139-98-15
Total number of matches: 252
Win percentage ignoring draws: 58.649789
Win percentage including draws: 55.158730
Even crazier is EE with no Academy Ruins, Tropical Island with no TWest or blue spells, and no tutors besides Gamble.
I like that 4/4/4 split in theory, but I just can't find the space.
