Trackers are insane. Speaking of ghost quarters, I'm at 4 copies in the main, cutting 4 ports and adding crucible back in from my last list. Split top 4 of a GPT this last weekend.
Have you missed having the Ports at all?? I'm not sure I can imagine not having Ports, but I guess the matches where your opponent doesn't have basics is almost an auto win now
So... I'm the new one (actually my first post)... or the old one ( i collect and play since 1994). I read the whole thing and I'm sure I wanna have the 'Lands' deck as the master of all decks. Well, my playstyle sais RG (I love to win in turn 1 without opponent-interaction) I'll go RUG, because I wanna really PLAY this and not just win.
I'm just 2 Ports away to be prepared.
Well I don't play tournaments, just with friends... But with good opponents anyway. The main difference is, we don't use SB. So I thought to add COTV main or so...
A few questions anyway: Why was this forum filled with posts 2014 and now it's quiet? No one playing lands anymore or is just all said and done?
Had Kaladesh influence to lands?
Looking for 2 ports because ports wastelands and tabernacle are essential; and the last post is 'switched posts for ghost quarters'... Really???
I played with Ghost Quarter over Ports this last weekend, and I lost my Painter matchup quickly due to having Quarters instead of Ports.
I don't think any of the Legacy threads are highly active. This is still a very played deck, I played in a 1.5k this weekend and there were 6 Lands decks in the room of 57 players.
I don't feel that Kaladesh influenced Lands at all. I played Nissa, Vital Force but I only got to play her once, which led to an emblem and it felt GOOD. I don't know if she will actually help any matchups though. The idea was to help against Miracles, but I haven't got to test that matchup much yet.
I personally got my Tabernacle through my local store owner who was able to obtain one for a great price to sell to me.
I remember pouncing on a good eBay deal on an Italian Tabernacle a few years ago.
Getting the English one was a better story, though - the shop near me had one, so one day I walked in and asked the guy behind the counter if he wanted to take a look at some cards. I started to pull out basically every high-value card I could part with: Goyf, foil Goyf, Lily of the Veil, foil Noble Hierarch, Cryptic Commands, Fulminator Mages, and the Italian Tabernacle. The guy's eyes are just lighting up at the amount of money hitting the counter, and he looks at me and goes, "You want cash, or store credit?"
I point straight at the English Tabernacle in the case. "I want that."
And the color just drains from his face. "Uh... alright, um... let me get the manager." Evidently the Tab and various Power Nine they had in the case had been there so long, everyone just assumed they were for display.
But I got it! (Yes, I've posted this in the thread before. But it's kind of my only real trophy card; it's hard not to get excited!)
So, Tabernacle story: My first Tab I got together with a Legends full set I bought for a friend. So, a few days later I was at 0 again.
My second (the first I kept) was from a Legends Booster (english). Great feeling. The second I kept was in an italian full set. Tab 3 and 4 (italian and english) I bought somewhere to get the full set.
I played once with 3 of them in a landdestruction deck (and won), but that's it.
A friend and RG Lands player will get one of them soon.
(The good old time where cards were really cheap compared with today)
I bought my tabernacle from a forum member here years ago for a little over $200, if I recall. You'll need ports for sure, but I am enjoying my 4 quarter list very much. Anyone going to Eternal Weekend?
I played at a local 1k qualifier this weekend with 57 players. I ran Sparki's Ghost Quarter list with the addition of adding 1 Nissa, Vital Force and a slightly different SB.
Round 1 - Storm
So I quickly had recurring Ghost Quarters game 1 with an Exploration out and Loam. I kept Wuartering his lands on sight, and he ran out of basics quickly. I didn't put him on Storm before he went off because he didn't play anything but Ponder and Brainstorm before hand. I couldn't have done anything differently, I never dredged any combo pieces with Loam. Game 2 I played a T1 Sphere of Resistance. We were approaching time in game 2 and he attempted to go off when I had the combo out, he came up short and left me at 2 life. 2 swings from Marit Lage and we drew 1-1.
Round 2 - Jund Lands
Game 1 he had a quick mana bond and found a Loam before I could find a way to get Bog.
Game 2 I bogged his first 2 Loams and stripped away his green sources.
Game 3, we grounded for a while, but he was able to get the upper hand with an early Loam. Lost 1-2.
Round 3 - Abzan Nic Fit
Game 1 he searched up a Humility with Academy Rector in response to my Marit Lage. He scooped to my punishing fire and recurring Wastelands.
Game 2, it took me a while to find the combo pieces. He searched up an enchantment that made all lands 1/1's and I made Marit Lage in response, he scooped.
Round 4 - Elves
Game 1 I kept a mediocre hand and it didn't manage to go anywhere. He beat me down with the bunch of Elves he dumped T2. Game 2 I cleared his board with an EE on 1, then made Marit Lage T3. Game 3, I punished him hard for keeping a 1 land hand. I played double Sphere of Resistance and had Tabernacle out. Eventually I made Marit Lage and won.
Round 5 - Mono R Painter
I've never played this matchup and wasn't really sure what to do. He made T1 Helm and T3 Painter G1 to win. Game 2 I cleared away his first 2 helms with a EE, and killed his first Painter. I Gripped his Blood Moon and Ensnaring Bridge, but he managed to find a 2nd Bridge before Marit Lage could attack. I made a Nissa emblem. He surgical'd my EE when I attempted to Transmute for a 2nd. So I got Chalice instead and held back on slamming it for 1, big mistake. He played Welder next turn and won off that.
Round 6 - Esper Stoneblade
I never realized how easy this matchup is. He never really played magic, I won 2-0.
I finished just outside prizing and receiving an invite to the championship. There are 2 more qualifiers and I intend on qualifying in one of them.
I'm not sure how much I like the Quarters over Ports. They are absolutely brutal in some matchups, but so much worse then Port in others.
I really enjoyed having the 3rd EE. I dredged over Nissa a couple times which didn't feel great, but I don't think I had any game where putting her into play would have felt bad.
I only got to play the Tireless Tracker against Esper Stoneblade, and it felt win more there, but that's an already favored matchup. I somehow dodged the 11 Miracles decks in the room, which is where I really wanted to play Trackers and Nissa.
Karakas was bad all day, mostly due to what I played against. I'll likely be moving it to the sideboard. There was only 1 Reanimator deck that I saw, and I feel like Bog is far more important in the mirror.
Any tips on playing against Painter Servant? Also, I know the mirror leans in favor of the RG version, but what should I be bringing in?
Against the Mirror I sided in Trackers and my 4 K Grips.

The mirror favors the RG version just a tiny bit. Against the mirror I boarded in chalices, as they're much more reliant on one-drops (Gamble, etc). The last time I played, I also got to chalice 2 to cut off loam then crucible them out. Niche but it worked. Also boarded Trackers and Grips too. Cutting them off mox diamond is huge sometimes as it becomes a mana war.
Painter is scary, blood moon is crazy. I don't know what lists are like 100% nowadays, but if you make a token you should win beyond ensnaring bridge. Early EE@3 for a blood moon button isn't bad. Kills bridge too. If you can fetch early forest and have a mox diamond, you'll also always have 3 colors even if they moon you for EE. Watch for Welder if you do decide to drop an early EE. Postboard holding a grip can cut them off wins by killing the servant in response to the stone. Chalice is MVP for sure.
Hey guys, I played 7-3 at Eternal Weekend, just good enough to hit the payout. Ran into some rough matchups along the way. I'll write up a tournament report later from what I can remember.
I added crucible back in going to the 4 ghost quarter lists. I'd probably still play it if I was on ports too. I didn't miss orb.
I like drawing more explosives throughout the game. It helps in SO many matchups. Tutoring and recurring it can take time we sometimes just don't have. The card is just very good right now, being able to play around counterbalance and Sanctum Prelate, as well as being able to do things like wipe a DRS + Delver in one go early game.
G1: He has a turn 1 delver followed by triple wasteland. Delver do what delver does.
G2: I resolve an early tireless tracker which quickly grows out of bolt range and it beats through everything along with punishing fire.
G3: I get to low life from early pressure, EE away two deathrites and obtain a crucible + wasteland lock.
1-0
Round 2: RG lands
G1: He has a super early Mox diamond + Exploration + loam hand. I play carefully early as to not let him know what I'm on, leading fetch, wasteland, ghost quarter, while he durdles and drops tabernacle, depths and maze of ith. On a crucial turn, I notice his board state and wasteland his taiga, EE = 0 his mox diamond, and then bog him. This leaves him with no green sources. I find my stage and copy his depths.
G2: I have a tireless tracker he is unable to kill (He later shows me he boarded 4 fires out), and it grows to 13/12 held back by double maze of ith. I EOT crop rotate for a wasteland, waste one, loam on my turn and waste the other and get in for a solid 15 damage to kill him.
2-0
Round 3: Painter
G1: He blood moons me.
G2: He goes T1: Simian Spirit guide + Ancient Tomb -> Recruiter for Magus of the Moon. He plays magus and I float mana and decay it. He plays a painter's servant, I play an EE at two. He plays grindstone with enough mana to activate, but I have two mana up. I stupidly tap my grove so I can double fire the servant and he grinds me in response. Huge misplay on my part. Matchup is crazy hard, though.
2-1
Round 4: Death and Taxes
G1: He keeps an incredibly land light (nonbasic) + vial hand, while I keep a solid hand with punishing fire. I intuition for Tabernacle, Punishing Fire + Loam, he gives me the loam. I waste him off his lands, and he has zero lands in play with a mother of runes. He vials in revoker naming mox diamond. I loam back tabernacle and he scoops.
G2: He leads T1 Karakas and passes. I waste it. That was his only white source, and he goes Port x 2 + Wasteland while I build an unbeatable board state.
3-1
Round 5: Miracles
G1: It's a bit grindy, but I eventually assemble an EE lock while he tries to keep me off EE4ing a jace for multiple turns. I recur the EE with jace at 11 and he's out of countermagic and scoops.
G2: I die to a great Wear/Tear and mentor control. I go for broke on depths but he has an entreat on top.
G3: Chalice was MVP here. He misplays and cliques my loam when he should've taken chalice, and it sets him too far behind. He eventually Wear/Tears the chalice but I tolaria west a second one and regain control. Ghost quarter was nice here too, cut him off white pretty hard.
4-1
Round 6: Burning Reanimator:
G1: I get turn 1'ed Sire of Insanitied. I scoop before revealing what I'm playing.
G2: I get turn 2 sire'ed, but have a maze of ith to prevent myself from dying. He reanimates a white chancellor, and I start to take damage, but eventually am able to his endstep recur punishing fire (past sire trigger), then shoot sire twice, leaving maze of ith to chancellor. I eventually am slowly punishing him to death behind maze of ith. He reanimates tidespout tyrant going to 4 and I shoot him twice.
G3: He goes T1 Dark Ritual, Entomb + Exhume Sire of Insanity. Revealled Chancellor too not that it mattered. :|
4-2
Round 7: Eldrazi
G1: He has a T1 chalice which is actually really good against my exploration + crop rotation hand, I EE it away but am too slow and die to some Thought-Knots.
G2: He has the fun Eye of Ugin + double Endless One start which I proudly drop a tabernacle into play. I ghost quarter all his lands and he can't win.
G3: I cut him on mana early and drop a tireless tracker while he's behind. By the time he has anything in play, I have a 7/6 and can race him.
5-2
Round 8: BUG loam
G1: It's kind of like lands, but with no red cards, and cards like Maelstrom pulse and decays in the main, along with Lilianas. I kill him pretty quick with a 20/20 once I find an opening. I thought he was on dark lands.
G2: He has T0 Leyline of the Void. What? I can't fight back against his loams and die.
G3: He has T0 Leyline of the Void again. I get Helm of Obedience'd.
5-3
Round 9: D&T
G1: I have triple fetchland in hand, so I hide what I'm playing early, while he goes T1 Mother of Runes -> T3 Recruiter-> Flickerwisp. Once he sees I'm on lands, he tutors up Sanctum Prelate which is exactly what I wanted. He drops prelate naming 2, which I untap, EE = 3 and get Flickerwisp x 2, Recruiter, and Prelate, leaving him with lands and a mother of runes against my double punishing fire.
G2: I get locked out by revoker on EE + Prelate on 2 + Mother of runes. My out was Kgrip, but I can't find any and get slowly beaten to death with his ports tapping my triple maze.
G3: He has a great hand with T1 mom, double revoker on EE and tutors up prelate. I decide to just go for the combo since if it doesn't work I lose anyways, and he doesn't have it. Phew.
6-3
Round 10: "Oozing" Reanimator
G1: I bog his first entomb into griselbrand and make a 20/20.
G2: I bog his first attempt again, but he goes Dark Ritual -> Buried Alive getting the Necrotic Ooze + Phyrexian Devourer + Triskeleon combo, and reanimates the ooze. Ouch.
G3: Super grindy, he reanimates the Ooze with devourer in yard but no trike, and I rip maze of ith off the top to prevent myself from dying in one shot. He reanimates the Devourer as well, but I have depths to make a 20/20 blocker which kills him on the backswing.
what do people think about mainboarding the 4 Sphere of Resistance in the RUG version? We're not as focused on hitting the combo in G1 as the RG version, and I find myself bringing it in in almost every matchup anyways.

My sideboard is with the decklist. I'm still on 2 decays. They were nice being able to hit cliques and stuff and give me extra time from a slow beatdown in some cases.
I don't play spheres right now so I can't say. There was someone who was maindecking 4 explosives, no P-fire and 4 spheres that did well in a tournament a couple months ago.
Lol, somehow completely missed your SB, my bad. There's so many cards I like in our SB's that I have a hard time deciding what I want. I don't think I'm willing to cut Punishing Fire's for the Sphere's. Maybe if I can qualify at our next IQ I'll try Sphere's in the main for the last IQ.
Game 2 of the Top 4 of Daryl playing Joe last night is a great example of why I dislike Chalice in our SB. He ended up hurting himself a lot more then Joe in that game locking himself out of the Crop Rotation and Gamble in his hand which I believe were far more valuable to him then the Chalice on 1, especially since it was a T2 Chalice on 1 instead of T1 and Joe got a Top into play on his first turn.
The deck feels very good against Miracles and DnT. I have a lot of other matchups to test yet, but the GQ's might just be better then Ports until people start running basics.

Deck looks solid, I kinda like the mix of RG lands you have going. I think I'd somehow like karakas in the main over horizon canopy, but that's just me. Is two fetches enough?
Nice list. Mox Diamond is listed in both your main and side. I'll assume it's actually in the main or else colored mana could be tough to come by. What's actually in the side?
I'd suggest adding 1 Crucible as you're on 4 Ghost Quarter, of course for the waste-all-mana-sources plan but also for land recursion at a different CMC vs Sanctum Prelate.
Daryl Ayers' match against Joe Lossett really demonstrated the power of maindeck Boseiju. With so many Miracles decks out there now I think it's a strong inclusion.

"That's right!" shouted Vroomfondel, "we demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"
I decided to side Krakas because I haven't needed it in the last few events, and in testing against the BR Reanimator deck, it's not great. That new Reanimator deck is scary good! They can reanimate T1 quite frequently and have revealed a Chancellor so we can't do anything T1. Them reanimating a Chancellor tends to be the game. I am surprised how reliable that deck is with just 13 lands. They are light on basics though so locking them off mana is easy enough if they didn't keep a fast hand or had to mulligan.
I decided to SB Crucible and bring it in against decks playing surgical extraction. I missed the weekly Legacy event tonight, so hopefully Saturday goes well. I'll report back Saturday night.
The colored sources generally has not been an issue. I have loved Canopy in the deck, and I'm thinking about slotting in 1 Sensei's Divining Top. That card is amazing! On the opponents end step I can spin top and decide if I'm drawing or Loaming. I haven't lost a game in testing where I resolved a Top and played a Loam.
Noticed a lot of lists are running 4 Ghost Quarters over 4 Rishadan Ports. What's the main reason for this? Has anyone tried it and is it working for them?

7-3

My sideboard is with the decklist. I'm still on 2 decays. They were nice being able to hit cliques and stuff and give me extra time from a slow beatdown in some cases.
I don't play spheres right now so I can't say. There was someone who was maindecking 4 explosives, no P-fire and 4 spheres that did well in a tournament a couple months ago.

I'd suggest adding 1 Crucible as you're on 4 Ghost Quarter, of course for the waste-all-mana-sources plan but also for land recursion at a different CMC vs Sanctum Prelate.
Daryl Ayers' match against Joe Lossett really demonstrated the power of maindeck Boseiju. With so many Miracles decks out there now I think it's a strong inclusion.
