Sorry to hear about you coming in just short! What decklist are you running these days? (I think you're one of the few still playing RUG and I was wanting to move back to it)
Hey all,
I don't have much to add to the strategic side of things in this forum, but I just wanted to share my incredible success with this deck at GP SeaTac. I've never played a sanctioned game of legacy in my life until now and I finished with an 11-2-2 record, narrowly missing top 32. At one point I was sitting at 9th, poised for a top 8 before getting knocked out by Brian DeMars on his Miracles deck, who unfortunately, did NOT draw as dead as he did against Jarvis in the top 8. I'm completely dumbfounded at how much success I was able to have with this deck with so little experience. I must have ran super lucky most of day 1, but also I can attribute a lot to just how powerful this deck is in being able to attack with a quick combo finish, mana denial or creature attrition. I love decks with versatility, and this has it in spades.
Only metagame call I made on my own was having only four sphere-effects, which I was pleased to see after day was reciprocated by both Jarvis and the 14th place lands player (seen here http://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/gpsea15/top-32-decklist-2015-11-08). Luckily it paid off as I dodged all storm decks over 15 rounds (probably somewhat having to do with picking up the two draws very early and therefore removing myself from matchups like storm, infect and burn), and instead was able to maximize my usage of 3 chalice of the voids instead, which were great in many more matchups.
I wanted to put in a Molten Vortex over the Trinisphere (since Blood Moon terrified me), but realized only the night before the GP that the card I wanted was at my work (opened it during a work sealed league) and not at home, so I didn't get to fit that in. There were games where I wished I had Bojuka Bog mainboard, and not just because I played a Reanimator deck, but in cases where Miracles wanted to Snapcaster a Swords back. I also ran through several decks with Show and Tell where Karakas main board would have been a lifesaver. I also wanted Boseiju in the SB to grind through the Miracles lock that eventually removed me from top 8 contention. Unfortunately lands seems so tightly tuned, we can't have everything we want without completely bending over to storm when it comes up.
Love this deck, and eternally grateful for the lands gods that allowed me to have so much success in my first tournament. I'm a Lands player for life (metagame willing).
Sorry to hear about you coming in just short! What decklist are you running these days? (I think you're one of the few still playing RUG and I was wanting to move back to it)
No, he's not. He was playing RUG too, I think.
I'm playing an almost identical list to the SCG Oakland list I played, cutting a tropical down to two (Since I board chokes) and playing an Urborg. 3 Stage 2 Depths.
Hey yeah, I was playing RUG Lands all weekend. I brought Miracles with me too but I never played it in any of the events I played. I ran into Sparki during Round 2. Literally just checking the booths and noticed Sparki's foiled out RUG Lands in action.
I had a rough run of luck in the GP, but I played in a bunch of side events with RUG Lands with really strong success and overall the list I played felt super consistent and powerful. I won a ~60 Legacy tournament at the Mox Boarding House on Thursday night beating Death and Taxes, Shardless BUG x2, Storm and Goblins in the swiss.
I only played in one Grinder on Friday due to the overinflated cost of them at $30 US a piece. I lost in the Semi-Finals to one of Sparki's friends playing a Maverick/Junk deck. It was probably one of the weirdest games of Legacy magic I've ever played. We went to time in Game 3 with life totals at Me: 16, Opponent: 17. I had the game super locked out, but after Punishing Firing him at EOT Turn 5, he swords his own Knight to win the life total race, which in Grinder land means I lose. I wasn't really super pissed because he was a nice guy but kind of a stupid rule.
In the GP itself I went 3-3 drop. I had some bad matchups and some less than optimal luck. Notably I had to play against an Oops All Spells player. I crop rotate for bog to ice the combo and his last card in hand is Pact of Negation...>_>.
After the GP I played in the Second Chance Legacy going 5-0, beating: Merfolk, BUG Delver, UB Tezzeret, RUG Delver and Shardless BUG, then on Sunday I went 4-1 in the Legacy tournament, beating: UB Tezzeret, RUG Delver, Esper Stoneblade, Shardless BUG and losing to Death and Taxes.
So overall, the GP was a ton of fun and even though punting the main - the side event success made up for it. Overall an awesome weekend for Lands. My list was:
x4 Rishadan Port
x4 Wasteland
x3 Grove of the Burnwillows
x3 Maze of Ith
x3 Thespian's Stage
x3 Tropical Island
x2 Tolaria West
x1 Academy Ruins
x1 Bayou

Havnt gotten to play legacy in forever, but I'm happy to say that I should get to start up again soon.
Main deck my list is only off of yours by 2 cards, bayou and thicket are a second depths and 4 rotation. I was wondering when you bring in smokestacks?
Incredible showing in those side events! Thank you for the report.
I noticed that you cut Zuran Orb from the board. How did that work out?
@Everyone
How necessary is Glacial Chasm right now?
Of course there are games that it flat out wins. How many does it lose by being a dead draw? I can't count the number of times I've seen it early in a game and thought, "If only that were any other card..."
I've gone back to 2x Tranquil Thicket. Having gone without any copies for so long, I really notice the consistency it adds in combination with the tutors (I'm still on the Gamble-Intuition-Crop list below). The second copy is big as I frequently draw or dredge into it early on. The additional green sources occasionally make a crucial difference.
I usually don't mind seeing it early as much as not finding it at all. There are some matches where it comes out but I can't imagine not running it at all
So im back after a bit. Thanks for everyone who offered to help me pick stuff up off mkm, but i got it taken care of. The remainder of my deck just hit stateside, should be in my posession soon.
Since omni is gone, i feel like i can go back to jamming this sweetness. Just addressing a few things
Infect theoretically is a great matchup. However, they can go t1 dork t2 kill you, so i play the matchup by killing everything that moves. One nice thing about the deck is its pretty veunerable to wasteland, so in the matchup i tend to aggressively waste green sources. Maze of ith and glacial chasm are bonkers in this matchup. Dont get cute with pfire, shoot it off at any infect guy that moves. Since i play thalia and cannonist in my board, i essentially transform into aggro control postboard
Glacial chasm is such a unique and powerful tool, i would never really consider cutting it from my 75. It single handedly wins the burn matchup, and has utility in a huge amount of situations.
Cards i am considering currently to replace the md sylvan library
1x oblivion stone
1x crucible of worlds
1x chalice (still have yet to be impressed by this)
1x hangarback walker (its probably too cute but you never know)
1x trading post- besides this card being my fav durdle machine, i really think this card has potential. It acts as a recur for explosives, and if you pair with a codex shredder it can go infi with any card. It provides instant draw to save loams, and can gain life in a pinch. Idk, this just seems sweet to me
I do play both. Post fills its own niche in that it can draw cards, gain life, and make chump blockers. However, it is slow. Ruins fills a different niche. It can also recur, but can be fetched with twest, can be tapped for mana, and can be wastelanded. Pros and cons for each, but i like to have redundant pieces
I took out one engineered explosives and added (ominous chuckle) nevinyrral's disk.
The disk has been doing serious work. I blew out sneak and show twice with it.
I crushed miracles last night with it and smokestack did some work, too.
At Jersey SCG, I went 4 and 4 then dropped since I couldn't be 6 and 3 with the last match loss.
I lost to Jund, Burn, Thopterfoundry and Maverick.
The Jund player got my only source of acceleration on a first turn thoughtseize.
The burn player got me to 3 before I could set-up the glacial chasm shield.
But I learned that you need three thespian's stage in your list to reliably get and keep up the shield.
I also added a circle of protection: red to my sideboard because price of progress is such a blowout.
The thopter player had serious acceleration and was dropping threats almost every turn, I couldn't keep up.
The maverick player surprised me with his ability to keep up with me and make his own Marit Lage.
He top-decked his karakas before I could get mine.
good times...
So scg premium had an open series spotlight video on lands today, I don't have premium active currently so I was wondering if anyone saw it and thought it worth watching?
Oath of the Gatewatch spoilers just revealed Mirrorpool. Being the third ever mythic rare land initially got my attention, but it looks like it has some synergy with Legacy Lands.
Mirrorpool
Land
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
Tap: Add a C to your mana pool.
2C, Tap, Sac: Copy target instant or sorcery you control.
4C, Tap, Sac: Put a token into the battlefield that's a copy of target creature you control.
The second ability lets us copy spells which were countered. Could it get us a second Crop Rotation without sacrificing a second land? The third ability lets us copy the Marit Lage token as it's getting removed with Swords, Karakas, etc. Sacrificing it has synergy with Loam, of course.
The hardest thing about using it is getting the newfangled colorless mana. Sure, lots of our lands produce C, but it's just that little bit less consistent.
Sure, we can work just fine without Mirrorpool, but maybe it is helpful enough to justify a spot in the deck.
...being awesome with a violin doesn't mean you're awesome at writing your own songs. And writing good songs doesn't mean you're good enough at playing an instrument or singing to get a contract with a label.
Reflecting Pool: You know, technically, I *CAN* make any color of mana.
Exotic Orchard: Prove it. Do it right now.
Reflecting Pool: Well, not right now. I need some condi....
Exotic Orchard: LIES. GO DIE IN A FIRE.
Reflecting Pool:
Just FYI, I've been very pleased with The Abyss and I'd recommend that more of the black decks give it a shot. It has been huge against D&T, Show & Tell (though probably dead), Reanimator, X Stompy decks, Delver decks (though probably not needed against the non DrS, versions), and other light threat count decks. I've also really liked Nether Void over Trinisphere,
I like Nethervoid too! And sometimes Chains. I recently downsized considerably - I kept those two cards but got rid of the Abyss figuring we are already strong enough at removing creatures.
I hadn't really considered its value against S&T or Reanimator. But I think I'd prefer Fen against those decks. It costs quite a bit more, but we can dredge it up and tutor for it. Fen is also better against Sneak Attack itself (haste).
The stompy decks in my hood are almost entirely MUD with the occasional Eldrazi Post. Vs Delver Or Elves they are win-more (especially since I already board in Chalices). For DRS I prefer Needle or Totem (both okay to dregde). I could see The Abyss being good for D&T, But even then I'd rather make room for a Needle.
I've never tested it though. Awesome card and I'm glad it's working for you!
I imagine that perhaps running Tormod's Crypt would be better for graveyard hate in this instance due to Academy Ruins, since without Crop Rotation we're already losing the instant speed factor and may as well go for the recursive end of things.
Mirrorpool seems good because it makes the opponent's job harder. When it's in play, they can't simply counter a spell or remove Marit Lage because we can copy them. They'll either need more counters/removal, or need to Wasteland the Mirrorpool itself. Ultimately, simply having Mirrorpool in play taxes the opponents cards/permanents designed to hurt us.
Looking at Lands decklists on SCG, it appears that there's always at least one flex slot. Perhaps this would find a home there.

Reflecting Pool:
Mirrorpool looks legit. Having double the amount of abrupt decay and finding depths combo with only one rotation and land to sac? Hell yea. Too bad can't be used on grip, but double intuition is funny.
Mirrorpool seems good against Miracles. Those games really never end quickly unless it's in our favor anyways. This allows us to possibly force through a Crop Rotation or Loam, or just blow out a Swords. I don't know if I like it in the MB due to not really helping aginst the faster decks. I'm also not sure it's better then Boseiju against Miracles.
Played in the Classic at SCG Cinci after missing Day 2 in the Open.
Round 1 - 8 Rack played by Tom Ross
So, sat down across from Tom Ross round 1, a bit nervous to say the least. I easily beat him game 1, finding the combo with Life From the Loam. Game 2 I kept a slower hand and he started with a Leyline in play. Didn't find a Krosan Grip so onto game 3. I kept a fast hand and combo'd him on turn 3.
Round 2 - Storm
He was on the play game 1 and went off turn 1. Game 2 I mulliganed to 5 and kept a hand with 2 Ports, Wasteland, and a Loam. Scryed to see a Chalice on top. He didn't Turn 1 me so we played Chalice on 1 T2. He scooped to a Sphere of Resistance a couple turns later. Game 3 I kept a hand with lands, Mox Diamond, Sphere, Loam. He didn't go off T1, so I played a Sphere T1. Drew a Sphere my next turn and played that. He scooped after I started looping Ghost Quarter. Got very lucky to see a Chalice on top game 2.
Round 3 - Show and Tell
He Show and Tell'd an Emrakul turn 1, my first draw was not a Karakas. Game 2, I was able to Sphere on T1 and T2. Then the game got interesting. I played a Smokestack T3 and used it to grind him out of permenants while I had an Exploration and Crucible of Worlds. He never saw anything to definitely put me on lands. He scooped when I played Titania. Game 3, I was able to play an early Sphere, but I wasn't able to find any other disruption or combo him before he was able to Show and Tell an Emrakul.
Round 4 - Elves
I felt really bad for my opponent. He just missed going off T2, and loaded up the board, and I killed him with a Marit Lage T2. Game 2 I kept a weak hand, but had Punishing Fire and a Grove. my first draw was a Mox Diamond, 2nd Draw was a Wasteland. He never kept anything on the field.
Round 5 - Miracles
I simply got outplayed here by a very experienced Miracles player. I kept a weak hand Game 1, but played it out until he had me hardlocked. Game 2, I forced him to exhaust everything trying to keep me off resolving Life From the Loam. I used Drownyard to mess with his Top activations for Counterbalance after he slammed a T4 Jace. He was able to keep me off assembling the combo just long enough to Ult Jace. In my 7 dredges with Life from the Loam in Game 2, I dredged 2 lands, 4 Krosan Grips, Crucible, 3 Diamonds, 2 EE, 2 Chalice, 2 Crop Rotation, 2 Intuition, 3 Exploration, Molten Vortex, and Titania.
Round 6 - Infect
He beat me T2 game 1, he was on the play. Game 2 I kept him off lands, and I had a complete brainfart. I forgot to crop roatate for Tabernacle to force him to sac his creatures while he had no land. Ended up coming back to bit me. He used a sylvan safekeeper to get past Maze of Ith. Albeit, my draws in game 2 were really bad. I've played 15 rounds of magic at this point and was mentally exhausted. I dropped and we left to make the trip back home.
Deck felt great, just sucks to get paired with combo decks. On the bright side, I was able to pick up a Nether Void for just $125 after dropping from Legacy! So I'll be trying that out of the sideboard.
I'm not as familiar with the gamble version, but I kind of doubt it. Despite how many lands are run we are often choked on mana so activating multiple sea gate wreckage in a turn probably won't happen.
The change of manabond from 2 to 1 to 0 shows the increase in cards that we'd really rather not pitch. Used to be able to throw anything and use it from the graveyard. Now there is 4ish crop rotation, 3-4 gamble. Not to mention after boarding most of the hate cards can't.be gotten back
AK Tilted is Jarvis Yu?

Mirrorpool

Looking at Lands decklists on SCG, it appears that there's always at least one flex slot. Perhaps this would find a home there.

It might be a good card, and certainly looks fun to test. I'm not expecting it to be good enough to make the 75, but you never know.

well duh that's the cost of activating, but it won't set you back a land.
