I probably made it sound like some of the cards would be format warping. Automaton I only expect the brave or uninformed to play. I think Magus buying back LEDs and petals is something they would be in the market for.
I definitely went on a tangent when I realized a 3/3 is our threshold for being annoying.
Hey folks, so I'm gearing up for playing again (first time in about half a year). I missed out on the THC train so despite her not being a guaranteed slam dunk hit, I want to run her just for kicks.
In the maindeck I don't want to get too spicy with singletons, so for its flex slots I'm mostly looking to shore up on existing cards, with the exception of Mirran Crusader because beats are good and humans are good, and I'm temporarily benching my Avengers. Of course, let me know if I'm really missing out on some even better options, but for the most part keep in mind that I want a simple deck with consistency through card depth (many copies of fewer cards).
I'm been playing Palace Jailer un the SB recently vs.delver, reanimator, DnT and Miracles. I like it better than banisher priest. It may not be as easy to cast early, but the card advantage mid/late game wins the game. I also got to jail a Griselbrand which is a fun bit of flavor. If anything, chump blocking with it ensures the jailed creature never comes back and you still draw another card next turn. Comboes well with Flickerwisp. (Edit: no combo with Flickerwisp and the creature will return if the opponent becomes the monarch. My mistake. The only thing Flickerwisp will do is reset the Monarch state and re-exile the creature coming back into play).

8/23/2016: Palace Jailer leaving the battlefield won’t cause the exiled creature to return. The game will continue to watch for the next time an opponent becomes the monarch.

1) Your gatherer link seems broken. Maybe my browser though?
2) You can still Wisp the Jailer to exile multiple creatures at once; it's just that they all come back if the opp. becomes monarch right?
Curby: Fixed the gatherer link. You can Flicker the Jailer to exile multiple creatures but when the opponent becomes Monarch the creatures will come back.
I got to do the Recruiter loop against Miracles at a GPT on Saturday. Was funny watching his spirit slowly drain away when every turn was "Equip previous Recruiter with Sword of Fire and Ice. *he kills it, etc* Play another Recruiter to find Recruiter." for about 5 turns until the little dude just killed him.
I was 3-1 going into that match and we were forced to play it out because he was on 7 points. Propelled me into 1st going into top 8 where I immediately lost to burn. I made a poor choice with my Prelate (naming 1 instead of 3 when I was low on life and I knew he had Vortex in his list) that probably cost me game 3... I did have a second one on 6 that stranded 3 Fireblasts in his hand. ^.^
My previous loss was to Jund, and I beat Infect, Goblins, Big Red, and Miracles. Was a weird meta that contained 0 delver. I was trying out 2 Ghost Quarters as a 61st card and taking out the 4th Port. I would say it was nice, but my matches didn't super line up with it. It did however snag an Inkmoth, a Sol Land, a Fetch (when Miracles didn't want to shuffle), a basic when Jund fetched for them early, and a plains when Miracles had already played the two his list had. I think I would keep the 2 when going to a larger event as long as Eldrazi and Delver are popular.
No, just saw the top 8 list on mtgthesource. I couldn't make it to the event. It looks like you played SwordstoTimeshares' current list, the one including the singleton main Palace Jailer, but I may be wrong. Congratulations on your win and waiting for your report!
So some quick deck notes, I was on 3 flickerwisp 3 recruiter before the event, but decided I wanted to have the 4th wisp as that card is consistently the card I want. I'm on a 61 card mainboard at the moment. The main reason for this is that I wanted to try palace jailer, but didn't have anything else that I wanted to cut, so 61 cards ho. Otherwise event went well and the better lucky than skilled definitely rung true for me for many parts of the tournament.
Building the sideboard, I knew Death and Taxes is outrageously popular in our region, so I made sure to pack as much specific cards for the mirror as possible, in this case the manriki gusari and Sword of war and peace. The faerie macabre was a last minute addition as well, though I didn't ever play against a reanimator or dredge deck so it didn't end up mattering. Cataclysm never got cast but I sided it in a few times, same for Judgment and relic warder.
Tournament ended up being 7 rounds with a cut to top 8. I finish with a 5-1-1 record in swiss and narrowly getting in at 8th seed. I didn't take notes during the event so a lot of this is just from memory and not 100% accurate.
Round 1 Goblins 0-2
Starting off super strong, is my opponent as he wins the die roll, plays a turn one lackey. I have nothing and die super quick, as ringleader draws him 3 goblins including a Krenko.
Can’t remember what I sided out, but I know brought in my Judgment and Priest for sure.
Game two on the play, I land a turn one vial, forget to tick it up, he lands a lackey. I play my revoker naming goblin sharpshooter. It gets gempalmed and I die to sharposhooter, good times.
Round 2 Mud 2-0
Really nice guy, unfortunate that I’m the second dnt play he has to play today and it went about as expected. Game one on the draw he kind of gets mana screwed and a batterskull beats in from 20 till he goes down
Out: 3 Mom, 2 swords to plowshares
In: Cataclysm, council’s Judgment, leonin Relic-warder, 2 path to exiles
Paths are a strict upgrade in the matchup and mom’s are completely useless as far as I can tell.
Game 2 on the draw, he gets a fast trinisphere, but it doesn’t matter as I hit 3 lands drops, wasting once, and putting a batterskull into play again as he floods out this time.
Round 3 UR delver 2-1
A person I’m pretty familiar with, so we knew what each other were on as soon as we sat down. I lose the die roll gain and start on the draw. Game one I get a fast batterskull and he can’t race.
Out: 3 Phyrexian revoker,
In: Sword of War and Peace, 2 Path to Exiles
I know he’s not on lavamancer so easy cut there. Sword for extra life gain and path though not great as he runs a large number of basics, is more than good enough compared to his threats
Game 2 on the draw, he starts with a delver which blind flips. I attempt to cast some spells, some go through some get countered. Eventually he lands a sulfuric vortex, and brainstorms into two stormchaser mages for the kill.
Game 3 sideboard stays the same but now I’m the draw. I keep a super risky hand with 3 lands and Batterskull, Jitte, SoWaP, and Aether vial. Vial gets forced’, he plays a delver and passes. From there I draw a stoneforge which I hold, and port him. He plays a swiftspear and probes me, we both laugh. I take 3 as his delver failed to flip. I play SFM on turn 3, have a prelate in hand now. He kills my mystic and prelate, but at some point I path and swords his only creatures and put a SoFaI into play. He plays a vortex and its off to the races. Ended up putting him to 2 while at 3, and he dies to his vortex in his upkeep.
Round 4 MUD 2-0
Can’t remember much about this match, but it basically went the same as my round 2 opponent, batterskull he dies
Round 5 Death and Taxes 2-0
The first of two mirrors, and I came prepared for sure. He’s on the Wingmare build. I lose the die roll as he goes turn 1 vial. I play a plains and pass, he plays another land and passes, I play another land and sword his mom, then sword his crusader, and hit him with jitte and that was basically game
Out: 4 Thalia, GoT, 2 Sanctum Prelate, 1 Batterskull
In: Containment Priest, Council’s Judgment, Leonin Relic Warder, Manriki Gusari, Sword of War and Peace, 2 Gideon
I have loads for the mirror, and it paid off pretty big
Game 2 on the draw, I keep a 3 lander with vial, but snap kept seeing a Gideon. I play out vial and swords his turn one mom on my turn 2. He revokers my vial afterwards. Turn 3 he gets a mystic in play getting a jitte. I flicker his revoker to cheat an avenger into play. He plays his jitte, missing a land drop. I take the opportunity to wasteland him, and use port to keep him off two mana, leaving wisp back to block if anything else happens. He finally finds another land after I get a second avenger, and uses the mana to play an avenger to try to slow down the damage he’s taking. I slam a gideon emblem hit him for 12 down to 2, and his life is too low to keep him going on the following turn.
Round 6 Death and Taxes 2-1
Mirror again, he’s pretty new and also on wingmare. Game one he’s able to get enough fliers and I don’t have enough lands to be able to get my jitte active to clear his board.
Sideboard same as above
Game 2 on the play. I get a super fast jitte and keep his board clear until he dies basically.
Game 3 on the draw. He gets a turn three jitte before equip, but I get an Avenger plus manriki gusari and It just hits him and destroys his jitte and it just gets there as he finds no removal.
Round 7 Eldrazi Stompy 0-0-3
We draw
So fun story now, I’m 8th with abysmal breakers at 16 points, and 9th place has great breakers at 13 points. So I need him to lose to 10th place so that I can remain in top 8. As the tournament was for picks, I took the guaranteed EV play of drawing, guaranteeing at least 9th, and hoping for the best.
I walk by, and he’s on lands against grixis delver and I’m thinking I’m dead for top 8. I play some mirror matches for fun and walk by again at the round end. The Delver player got game 2 and in game 3 has a hand of triple bolt, a blind flipped delver, a DRS and dazed the lands player only play of tireless tracker. So I’m live for top 8
Quarterfinals Elves 2-1:
I know he’s on elves
Game one on the draw, Revoker on Heritage Druid slows him down a lot, but birchlore rangers eventually gets him a gsz on 3 to rec sage it and hard casts a behemoth and kills me.
Game two on the play, I hit the turn 2 containment priest with mom protection. His hand is pretty slow as he gets a nettle sentinel and some DRS but no other action. I get a jitte online and it gets decayed after killing some things. Afterwards a palace jailer exiles the sentinel and a SoFaI Avenger eventually clears up everything.
Game three on the draw, my opponent mulls to 4 and unfortunately doesn’t get there in what amounts to a non game as I hit the mom, priest line and follow up with a jitte.
Semi Finals: 2-1 Canadian Thresh
This dude I know for 5 for 1’ing me with a pontiff and I end up getting that game, but this week he’s on Canadian Thresh, or a very very good matchup.
Game 1 He lands a turn 1 delver, dazes my vial I kill the delver while having a cavern’d in mom, my cavern gets wasted. Eventually I find enough white lands to play SFM and cheat in batterskull ending the game on the spot.
In: 3 Revoker, 1 flickerwisp
Out: 2 Path to Exile, 2 Rest in Peace
I know he runs forked bolt, so I play around it as hard as I can
Game 2 on the draw, I have a double thalia, GoT hand with cavern. I play both, they both die, and I die before finding a real white source to goyf and delver.
Game 3, I have an insane curve out. I go vial, gets forced, thalia, prelate on 1, and he gets completely locks only able to cast a forked bolt to kill my thalia before the prelate lands, and bear beats turn into SoFaI beats and he dies.
Finals: 2-1 4 C Loam
Watched him play vs Bant Blade in quarters and wasn’t looking forward to the matchup.
Game one on the draw he fails to get a turn 1 chalice as I land a turn 1 vial. He turn twos a chalices and I do nothing. He does nothing but play a land on turn 3, I get a stoneforge mystic vialed in. It gets punishing fire’d. I untap and slam my Prelate on 2, shutting him out as he GSZ for a knight where I then flicker his chalice and swords it playing a mom and he concedes.
Out: 4 Thalia Guardian of Thraben, 1 Flickerwisp, 1 Vial,
In: 2 Rest in Peace, 2 Path to Exile, 2 Gideon Ally of Zendikar
Wasn’t sure if this was right, but I went with this in the end
Game two on the draw. I have a slow start, he lands a turn two lili and it gets him there as he proceeds to grab a bob another bob, and a knight, though I have a rest in peace in play it doesn’t do enough.
Game three on the play. I turn one a vial, he doesn’t do anything. I turn two a revoker on lili, he decays my vial after it manages to get an Avenger in play. It beats down while I play a flickerwisp destroying his mox diamond. He eventually plays a bob and knight, while I get a SFM to search a jitte. There were two critical turns. He had 2 mana which he used to punishing file my Flickerwisp. I then immediately slam two moms and pass and he becomes unable to clear them, giving me access for the rest of the game. The second critical turn is when I go for lethal with my serra avenger. He is forced to swords his own Dark Confidant as he sided out maze of ith to put himself to 2. On the following turn he attempts to decay my Avenger, I give it pro black playing around a possible marit lage token, and the attack comes in for lethal giving me the match and tournament.
A couple of lucky breaks and good matchups for the majority of the event ended up getting me a Tropical Island, so I'm pretty happy. Looking forward, not sure if the palace jailer is completely necessary so I may go back to a 60 card mainboard
@ Elpresident564: How did the Path to Exiles perform for you? The Gideons? I've noted its hard to get to 4 mana to cast Gideon in the mirror, and our Miracle matchup is already pretty good nowadays. I've been debating the Path to Exiles in the board for extra removal.
BTW: I've seen you at Knightware before. We share the same first name.
@wynk Oh, I keep forgetting your tag, sup. Paths were ok vs UR as they only have like 14 threats, so any extra removal is good even if they get the land. Against everyone else, path was just a strict upgrade vs swords to plowshares, so they were pretty good especially vs rug delver as extra removal and the mud players for denying the extra life. For the Gideons, I didn't play against any miracles players, but post board getting to 4 mana while rough, some times does happen, at which point he is ok as an emblem. Honestly, it may have been a mistake to board him in for the mirror, seeing as not only is 4 mana difficult (and it was), but also its another good revoker target depending on the board state. The miracles matchup I think is pretty good, but I think Gideon is a huge part of it for me at least, that and the SoWaP.
realized the 4 caverns should be ports, time to go a editing. I found that the cavern has been fine as a one of, there was only one game where color was an issue because of that. If more miracles was played in our region, I definitely would be on 2 or 3 caverns and cut the avengers for more prelates and recruiters
Nice ideas Medea. Do you really need 19 "White" sources? The only un-Cavernable WW cards are Flickerwisp main and Gideon and Judgment out of the side. I wonder if 2-3 maindeck Ghost Quarters in place of Plains (or maybe -2 Plains -1 Cavern) would be better overall. You'd have to switch out those WW sideboard cards if they end up being too hard to cast.
@Curby
I don't know. I'm still in initial testing stages, and I'll likely keep trying out a different variation every week or so. I 3-0'd with this tonight (vs Enchantress, Turbo Depths, Tin Fins):
Semi Finals: 2-1 Canadian Thresh
This dude I know for 5 for 1’ing me with a pontiff and I end up getting that game, but this week he’s on Canadian Thresh, or a very very good matchup.
Haaa yep that was me. I was headed there to play DnT fresh of last week's good result, but something in me just spoke "Canadian Thresh" and I called the audible and did it. Wanted to test my blue deck skills. It's not that I think RUG was going to be amazing, just thought I'd have a good time. Ended up working out well, and glad to have been taken down by a superior deck, at the least.
Really glad Jailer is catching on. It's a major powerhouse, and effectively replaces everything I loved about running Dark Confidant in my heavy black-splash days. The effect is at least thrice-fold better than Banisher Priest's, whose LtB trigger is just a terrible, terrible thing.
I definitely went on a tangent when I realized a 3/3 is our threshold for being annoying.
I've got this so far:
4 Stoneforge Mystic
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
3 Mother of Runes
3 Phyrexian Revoker
2 Recruiter of the Guard
2 Sanctum Prelate
2 Thalia, Heretic Cathar

2 Path to Exile
2 Rest in Peace
1 Containment Priest
1 Pithing Needle
1 Sword of War and Peace
1 Rest in Peace (or Faerie Macabre)

BTW: I've seen you at Knightware before. We share the same first name.
I might be overboarding in the mirror though.
Given the 4 Cavern of Souls you run, counterspell decks like Miracles should be the least of your problems. Color consistency was okay?

Really glad Jailer is catching on. It's a major powerhouse, and effectively replaces everything I loved about running Dark Confidant in my heavy black-splash days. The effect is at least thrice-fold better than Banisher Priest's, whose LtB trigger is just a terrible, terrible thing.
