My tournament report from Dallas SCG Legacy Classic....not the most detailed,but...you get the gist.
I went to the SCG event on Saturday thinking about playing in the Legacy Challenge at 4 PM....after trading in enough cards for 2 Imperial Recruiters,I priced out the Magi and Plateaus, debated spending rent money for the rest...but drove to work and borrowed 500 from my prince of a boss and went back to Ft Worth and picked up last 2 recruiters, the magi and plateaus...(spent some of the money I had banked...so still have rent..ha).....did not play the challenge, went home and built Imperial Taxes by distilling down several lists for what I thought would work for me.Gambled on 61 cards(Resto being 61st,but have done that for a year or so now) and 22 lands(goldfishing showed me land was not seemingly an issue).I also was wondering if going in cold with Imperial was suicide, but turned out...no.
Showed up Sunday right around 8 am,purchased a foil Rest In Peace to match the other two in my side, then sat down and did deck list, adding Resto at last minute. My report is a little fuzzy as I had no thoughts of getting to top 8 at the start...so did not take notes. So please bear with the vagueness of this report.
Round 1 WIN 2 - 0 - 0 VS Edward Solis
Edward was on a Delver(Grixis If I remember correctly)All I can really remember is I was able to stick vial right away in both and surprised at not getting countered, then D&T did what it does and this round the red never really came into play,so it was like playing D&T anyhow.Match went quick, and was happy to get through round one with a win.
Round 2 WIN 2 - 0 - 0 VS Dustin Carriere
Dustin was a nice guy, closer to my age(I am 52)and I had no idea what he was on. I can not remember who played first game one,but all I saw was a fetch land, and a probe,I had Thalia and Ethersworn in hand,he scooped.
I guessed correctly on Storm and sided in the other 3 ethersworns and a couple rest in peace...and game two taxed him quick and the hate bears did there thing.Still, red did not come into play ....after the match he said he was thrown by the main deck ethersworn. Also,I read some good advice that to play D&T well you should play as may other decks as possible so you know how to beat them, and since I have storm built and have played it,I was able to correctly put him on storm with two cards shown game one.
Round 3 WIN 2 - 0 - 0 VS John White
John is someone I have known for years, and a good player with an extensive collection,so I was not confident on winning this one.
Game one just happened, can't remember any specicifics but never really felt under pressure, game two I went wide and got him to 1 life,he fetched, smiled, and held out his hand...GG .I was now 3-0 and thinking all down hll from here.
Round 4 WIN 2 - 1 - 0 VS Russell Cooper
Russell(Andy) was a really nice guy with a lot of mutual friends(I had never met him before though)and was on lands....Can not really remember who won game 1 and 2...just remember having to battle through punishing fire/grove....and somehow got one of the first two games(I think one)
Game 3 I pithing needle his thespian stage, went wide, and battled through punishing fire and maze of ith and managed to eventually get enough damage through to kill him...it was a battle of wills, and I had to keep the pressure on.was relieved this one was over..and thought I would be in for a loss in the next round or 2,as the competition would only get stronger.
Round 5 DRAW 1 - 1 - 0 VS Raynaldo Ruiz
Did not know Raynaldo but he was friendly,he was on BUG Delver(a delver variant,I think bug)....we held each other at bay for two long games and each got a win with no time left for a game 3....
Round 6 1-1-1 VS Bo Zhang
Bo was friendly and on Miracles...a deck I despise, all I remember is games that ended with 1 and 1...and a game three that we held each other off so we each ended with 12-14 life at the end of turns....now real pressure,I had to win next two rounds to get in to top 8.At this point I was starting to realize I might be able to do it.
Round 7 WIN 2 - 0 - 0 VS Micah Lupa
Micah was on rug..and I quickly ran him over with a stream of creatures which had him proclaim how there was no interactive element to our games...but he was not salty and took it in stride...he just seemed to have off draws I think. Now,had to win and in...
Round 8 2 - 1 - 0 VS Tom Andrews
I have know Tom for a while and have never beat him....so was not at all confident I could beat his maracles this time either,I was in 10th place at this point.
Game one,he never drew white mana and I quickly kept him under pressure and attacked to the win, game 2 he got his Vendillion online and I could not stop it,and the moat he dropped kept me from attacking as I had no fliers and no remoaval for the moat....game 3,he never got his counter ballance online, and at one point he threw an angel(hardcasting entreat for one to try and survive)I flickerwisped the angel and finished it.Whew....top 8!
Quarter finals...Albert Huang on Doomsday.I have know him for years and played against him a few times...He won game 1 easily, then game 2 and 3 was able to get thalia and ethersworn out in time to shut down his comboing off, game 3 dropped ethersworn after he doomsdayed, and he spent a long time trying to think of a way out...so...win 2-1
Semi Finals....Jarrod Freight on D&T....game one I won by winning the creature race, game two,he had two active moms and a jitte with counters which kept me from castin or dropping creatures after a while and made sudden demise useless....game 3,I mulled to 6,but accidentally drew 7 cards,my options were look at the hand, decide if I wanted my opponent to look, and shuffle one of them into my library,or go to 5,I went to 5...had no lands, decided to try it anyhow with the vial, figured if I went to 4 it would not be any better....and never drew a land, this was THE only time all day I had mana issues, and I am still racking my brain on what the right decision here was,I had a great hand of seven but only two lands, and he would have thrown one back,so I took the risk, and it was a miserable failure.
The Imperial Deck is basically D&T so I never felt out of water with it,and the red only came into play a few times, but recruiter is such a good tool for getting whatever utility you happen to need at any given time.Resto just kicks ass,and I love ambushing people with her....That is my report, and next time I will keep notes through the day in case I top 8 again.
Awesome report! Thanks for taking the time to write it up. Did you like RW taxes more than mono-W? I personally can't afford a playset of Recruiters for the deck, so I won't be playing it unless it gets a reprint, but it's nice to have a goal! Looks like you did amazingly with it.
I did like it...having recruiter to grab a utility bear is awesome.....and when Magus works it works very well.It plays like White Taxes..with a twist.
@Medea
Couple thoughts on the site, which is looking great.
1) Probably need to update the W/Colorless section since the recent Dallas Classic Top 8 decklist ran a full set.
2) Imperial is much weaker to Stifle, since it has extremely important targets in Imperial Recruiter and Fetchlands. I am [temporarily] back on WW because three players are active in my locals right now with decks running 4 Stifle. I remember in the Source discussion somewhere that Bahra, the deck's early champion and, if not creator, the one who found a viable core build and won with it, raised that he would probably not use Imperial if Stifle was a major presence in the format again.
3) Imperial is also weaker to Delver in general due to a lack of flyers (the deck lists typically only run 4 or, at most, 5.)

I tried two in my green splash taxes. I ended up cutting one crusader and one revoker to accommodate the two copies. I liked her a lot but cant see myself ever running more than 2. Her slow down effect is nice but I feel like I prefer a more permanent tax. I will try running her as a singleton next time because I really do not like cutting the revoker.

@Demonic Dust
Congrats on your great finish and thanks for the report!
Regarding spoilers:
I don't think Blessed Alliance is playable. While this is a great combat trick, I'm just not seeing the situation where I really *need* my sideboard slot to be this.
Gisela provides an interesting option between Restoration Angel and Baneslayer Angel. Both were ways to go over the top of the mirror and midrange matchups. Gisela has the upside of being bounced with Karakas, but lacks the tricks of Restoration Angel or the ability to regularly beat large creatures like Reality Smash thater Baneslayer Angel took down with ease.
The Hanweir Battlements combo is an interesting idea for the red splash. If anyone starts playing around with that, let me know how it goes. I'm a touch skeptical that it is worth two slots, especially since the combo is vulnerable to disruption on multiple fronts (Counterspells, removal, Wasteland).
I'll be the first to throw this out here: Geier Reach Sanitarium is disgusting with Spirit of the Labyrinth.
Blessed Alliance seems much worse than Warping Wail, and that card is already up to the air as to its playability in the deck, although there are some who swear by it.
I really like Gisela as an utility beater in place of Mirran Crusader since she's gas against Crusader's best matchup (Shardless BUG) too, while being more useful across the field by being evasive and having lifelink. Being Legendary grants Karakas protection. Downsides are the CMC4 which might put strain on land count and Vial but Resto has proved that it's a perfectly doable thing to adjust the deck to it. I wish she wasn't an Angel as she nombos with Resto but if Gisela takes the place of the 2 Serra Avenger in 24 land Taxes I don't see how it can't be any worse than now, so I'm really excited about getting to test her.
Geier Reach Sanitarium is an interesting card, and I'm really glad that WotC designed an utility Legendary land after all this time. But I don't think it fits this deck since we usually run out of cards in hand faster than our opponent. Sea Gate Wreckage is still my preferred lategame CA/cycler in 24 land builds.
I agree that Thalia 2.0 is a solid 2-of, but wouldn't ever run more than 2. She has limited utility in the lategame for a CMC3 creature, but she's a beast in the midgame. Great if you draw her early enough, but doesn't matter much not having her during a game.
A matchup note against Painter: Painter naming Blue negates Sword of Fire and Ice, since Sword's Pro Blue unequips itself. Learned this the hard way, grab other equipment.
Not much on DnT since i have the Vintage bug as of late but I saw Selfless Spirit:

another x/1 beater with an interesting effect. prolly not an instant add in but something to think about.
Personally I wish it could just be an anthem. I think the biggest thing we need help with are -1/-1 effects rather than destroy all effects. I guess this lets us be more aggressive or defensive in combat with tarmogoyf, etc.
You guys will say that I'm ******* insane, but I think this guy is legit on most if not all metrics:
It's a 1 drop that takes control over the game with any equipment on it. It's also an 1/3 making it unkillable by combat in the early game. With Mom protection it can bring down Goyfs and Anglers. It could take the place of some beaters allowing the deck to massively lower its average mana curve, freeing lands to lock down the opponent or deploying equipment much earlier.
Maybe I completely missed the mark and this is hot garbage but boy I do want to test it because it looks like fun!
I don't know about 'hot garbage', but it could get stuck onto our creatures, too. For instance, we couldn't attack into it unless we gave a creature pro-green, used Mirran Crusader, or flew. It could up being a liability. Perhaps.
Permeating Mass attacks into a 4/5 Goyf, opponent chooses to block. Combat damage happens - which doesn't go on the stack - and THEN the PM trigger happens, making the 4/5 Goyf a 1/3. Hasn't the Goyf already done 4 damage to PM? Even with the PM trigger on the stack, state-based effects check toughness, making PM die first. Or do I have this completely wrong?
Yes, your mass dies but it will effectively have neutered a 4/5 creature, and the opponent will be forced to block if it has any sort of equipment on it except maybe Batterskull. 1/3 body that effectively kills any sort of big blocker, I think it's pretty good value right there for a card that only costs 1 mana. If you have Mom you can even keep the Mass alive to keep infecting other creatures, or can keep the infection at bay with her. It's a great attacker early and a great blocker late. If you get a creature infected you can also flip them with Wisp, although turning your own creatures into copies of the mass isn't even a bad thing. The card makes the board much better for whoever has equipment, just like Humility does. It effectively levels the field, and with other creatures and equipment you have available you can balance the board to your favour. New Thalia can also go over whatever copy of it they have, or old Thalia with and equipment, or any flier.
As I said, the card seems worthy of testing, and even if it's not groundbreaking (I doubt it will become a staple no matter how good it turns out to be) it's definitely playable in the current shell and opens the door to new possiblities. Just like Carpet of Flowers, the card definitely seems much better in DnT than it seems to be at first glance.
Also there's this new 1UW O-Ring for spells that also piqued my interest. At CMC3 it seems costly especially in a list that already depends heavily on that CMC with better cards like TNN and V Clique (No-Port UW is already dangerously reliant on having a Vial at 3 online), but the interaction with Meddling Mage and Canonist, while very janky, is worth some testing. 2/3 flier is a very decent body regardless!
The PM would die before Goyf turns into a 1/3. When the trigger goes on the stack after damage is dealt, state based actions are checked. See that the mass got hit for 4 damage and it is destroyed. Could be a reason to run silverblade paladin to make PM a beast in combat.
Yes, its 3 mana, and in a colour thats not red nor green, but i belive it has some potential specially as a sweeper counter and i like the synergy with eldrazi displacer.
Yes, they are both 3 mana slots, and that would be mana intensive, but if we travel to wishland, you could flash this guy, counter the sweeper, and if someone tries to swords it, you could displace this queller guy to avoid the swords, and re-exile the spell before it resolves. Am i right with this reasoning??
It sounds good, but it sounds hella difficult to set up. Definitely wishland. And the reason I don't like Displacer in legacy is because, like you mentioned, it requires you to hold 3 mana up, and one has to be colorless. This interaction also requires Displacer, since Flickerwisp is going to be too slow to flicker him.
In the scenario where you had an active Displacer, a vial on 3, and 3 mana up, it would be kind of a blowout, though.
Even worse is that it doesnt work with flickerwisp, not in the way of re-exiling / re-target another spell since when exiled with flickerdude the queller would enter eot
Still 3 mana for a non-definitive counterspell agains a sweeper could be worth it
The PM would die before Goyf turns into a 1/3. When the trigger goes on the stack after damage is dealt, state based actions are checked. See that the mass got hit for 4 damage and it is destroyed. Could be a reason to run silverblade paladin to make PM a beast in combat.
Oh if that's what happens then it's kind of a letdown Dammnit Wizards!
Yeah, essentially any time priority is passed states based actions are "checked", ensuring each player has above 0 life, less than 10 poison counters, creatures have toughness higher than 0 or if they have enough damage marked on them. It goes a bit deeper but yeah, the goyf kills the mass.
