Here’s the deal, I want to enter my first ever legacy tourney. I’m going in blind never having played at this location ever or at any other for that matter!
I’m leaning toward these 75 based on what I read here and personal preferences:
It is open for discussion and I welcome suggestions and questions.
Now, the really hard part for me is sideboarding since I have next to zero experience with that. My basic sideboard plan as you can tell is to switch to “chalice @ 1” game 2 by removing mystics and jitte.
Wanting to have a better plan than that, I went to the source and took the list of decks to beat (below).
If you guys would be so kind to tell me your strategies to as many decks as you can I’d be extremely grateful. Particularly on what to take out, since what to bring in I have a decent idea.
Here are the DTBs with my noob plans:
Canadian Thresh (a.k.a. RUG Tempo, Tempo Thresh)
chalice@1 plan
With as much colorless creatures and what not costing at least 2 cmc, I'd recommend a full set of ancient tombs. Unless your playing burn, u should be able to kill them before they can hurt your life too bad.
O'ring against Emrakul (show and tell) and a general purpose answer against non-land permanents. I guess you favor the chalice plan against show and tell ?
I'd side out 2 citadels personally. And chalice over o ring is better IMO. It does nothing against sneak attack because they wait till they can sneak in the creature before putting it in play, but I see where your going. The deck digs a lot and chalice on 1 hurts them the most. But it's always personal preference in the end.
I think I'll take your advice on the sneak attack match up, although the O-ring can hit the enchantment itself.
The mana base changes are more complicated. I prefer going in with more resilience than explosiveness. I know affinity is all about being explosive, but it's my first tournament and I don't know if there will be wastelands all over the place or not. Besides, I love the look on ppls face when I -1 my Tezz on a citadel right away!
My first legacy IQ was this past Sunday and I saw only 2 wastelands the entire time.
And what I meant with O ring and sneak attack is hat o ring can hit sneak attack but good players always put it in play with 1 red up so they can put in the fatty and swing. And even if they show and tell it into play, they will still have the red up so they can respond to the oblivian ring trigger.
Good luck on your tournt and post results please. I have 3 more coming up. 1 each in February, March, and may. Just working on my side board mainly at the moment cuz I really like the flow off main deck.
Also. If u are worried about storm or elves. I'd suggest ethersworn canonist
Edit: if anyone knows any good sideboard cards for bug control, I'd love to hear them

Sneak and Show has got to be my worst matchup; I don't think I have ever won even 1 game (auto 0-2). I'm thinking about dropping my o-rings for a couple of ensnaring bridges. This will stop them from even attacking if they get their fatty into play; I can stilll attack with my ornithopters, skirges and pest. We can then fast equip plating or use ravager shennanigans or even wait it out for Tez ultimate.
Not alot of decks (besides Jund) are running artifact hate, so I think ensnaring bridges will have good application against other creature based decks like reanimator, maverick, and even stoneblade.
I wouldn't waste too much time on specific SB hate for this deck, they are sort of similar to Esper Stoneblade, they can attack via different angles. Mulligan slow hands away and try to go under them as quick as possible. I would keep hands that have at least one of Etched Champion, Arcbound Ravager, or Cranial Plating and hope they don't have any removal.
If you play Dispatch in the MB like I do, hold onto them for Batterskull. Nothing worse than them gaining life and undoing your damage. If it gets to the mid-late game, ravager and chump blockers for their batterskull; and hope to resolve Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas to finish them off.
I was asking advice to go to my first legacy tourney and here is how it went down.
Out of 18 players, I finished 17 and went 1-4. I attribute it to lack of skill on my part as the main reason, the second reason was I didn’t exactly have the deck I wanted (I couldn’t get the other 2 springleaf drums I wanted), and the third reason is, of course, bad luck.
Match 1: Was up against some weird BW deck with Sorin, Lingering souls, discard, pox and trinisphere.
Game one had a so so hand and kept. He proceeded to discard me a ton of cards and beat me. Game two, SB: -3 Vault Skirge -1 ravager, +4 chalice, crappy hand, mulled to six, crappy hand again and kept. Lost.
Match 2: Jund. I start a game ahead because my opponent had a deck list error.
Game one, crappy hand, mull, good hand. Beat him fast with plating on Skirge racing two gyofs. My only win of the day…
Match 3: Esperblade (UWB goodstuffs)
Game one, he has discard and wasteland, brings out a jitte, but I manage to rip an opal of the top of the library and land a ravager to counter his jitte while I beat him into a pulp with skirge to race his TNN. Game two, sideboarded wrong: -3 Tezz -1 Master, +4 Chalice. Then made the misplay of the day by attacking into a Strix and not realizing he has deathtouch after I tranfered ravager counters onto my creature, down hill from there and lost. Game three, -1 Master, +1 O-ring in adition. Couldn’t do much he had a great hand with StP to respond to my chalice@1 and everything good and timely flowing into his hand, engineered explosives galore. Could have won it if I didn’t screw up royaly game two even though it is not a favorable match up.
Match 4: Ad Nauseaum Storm Combo.
Game one I proceed to dispense beatings, he tries to go off but it’s not enough. Game 2, sideboard: -3 tezz -1 Master, +4 chalice. He starts, combos and I die. Turn one kill. That’s just the nature of the game. Game 3, I start, the hand has a decent beating but no chalice. I keep, I lose. He goes off turn 2.
Match 5: Lands
Game one he has Tabernacle as the first land drop. Wastelands and ports my lands, engineered explosives says hi, takes forever but kills me with manlands. Game two, Sideboard: +3 RiP +2 Needle +3 O-Ring, -3 Tezz -4 champion -1 Master. I managed to land a needle on wasteland after mulling to six. He has a great hand again and ghost quarters me to oblivion.
What I learned ? Affinity is a mulligan intensive deck and I am not versed in the art of mulliganning. Maybe a version with pests is more consistent at dispensing beatings game one? My sideboard felt adequate were I more aggressive with the mulligans.
^^^ Iwould highly recommend at least three legalize of sanctity in board. I beat storm because thy couldn't go off and bounce both leylines before dying. It'll also help u out against all the discard decks.
Master of E is okay it too slow for me. Especially with only 2. Tombs. I recommend a set and hopefully u get your last 2 drums. I tried here tezzy and always found em in hand with no way to cast. I'd drop 1. And how was jitte. Seems a little slow but if connected it seems to be good but quite a bit of investment.
Stop forge also seems too slow and more artifacts needed. I would suggest a play set of signal pests because it boosts and can't be blocked by grounders.
And I would take out 2 lands. Preferably the dens. I run 15 and with opals and drums, it's the perfect balance.
Hope his has helped. My next legacy event isn't till end of February but hopefully I hit top 8 again with my same list I posted earlier but I plan to work on board a bit
Does anyone run tainted strike in affinity. Instant +1/0 and infect for B. Seems pretty win con to me?
No, for the same reason that Blinkmoth Nexus is generally preferred over Inkmoth Nexus. It too often amounts to "mixed" damage; having your opponent at 4 life and 8 poison is a terrible way to lose the game.
^^^ this. I tried nexus in mine before but too often wheni won with poison, I could've won with normal damage. And very rarely did I win with poison when put in a ratio of winning with non poison.
I had a quick question for my Affinity deck: I scrapped a few creatures from my deck in order to add 3 Dispatch. I'm trying to decide if this is a good move, if I would be better served with Galvanic Blast or Spell Pierce instead, or if I should plug the creatures back in. Here's my current deck, for reference:
I run 4 pests and think they're worth he set in main. They make ornithopters good of I don't have a plating or want to have ravager counters placed on it.
If I had to choose dispatch or galvanic boas I would choose blast just cuz it could be the extra damage needed to win.
Of course u run so much white in board that your dens would need to become glimmervoids.
I wouldn't put master back in. Too slow IMO.
And how has revolvers been in the main. Seems and odd choice since affinity is about speed
I have asked my mates about which would be better for my affinity deck: Master of Etherium or Steel Overseer?
- Master gives a small boost straight away, is a threat himself, and has a big butt.
- Overseer is weaker, takes a turn to activate, yet can keep powering up your guys.
Which is better for most matchups?

Most Legacy players don't even consider Overseer for serious, competitive Affinity builds. It's either Master of Etherium or Arcbound Ravager as your secondary beatstick. Your primary threat is Etched Champion. Always.
Ravager is the better stick IMO. You can sac a cre write to remove bridge from below from graveyard from game, or sac a lot and toss counters on champion. No blue for this guy so no worries on land mana issues

I consider Master and Ravager to be roughly in the same league in terms of the role they serve and their effectiveness in that role. I don't judge anyone for their preference of one over the other, which can often come down to the particular synergies of your individual build.
That said, I've been doing some testing with friends recently in preparation for SCG:St Louis coming up and I'm coming around to the Ravager side of the fence on my build. I always liked that Master is instantly a huge beatstick. But I'm liking the edge Ravager has in speed coming down sometimes (especially in my build which is already heavy on 3 CMC drops). I also enjoy the fringe benefits of him improving the Dredge and Burn matchups. I was even able to win a match against a Reanimator deck by sacrificing enough artifacts to Ravager to prevent my opponent from safely attacking with Elesh Norn on turn 2.
Hey all, I'm currently building Affinity for modern, but wanted to put together a very different list for legacy.
I'm definitely a huge fan of the control variant of the deck, and here's what I have at the moment.
I have a few questions though. I have 2 Arcbound Ravager, 2 Master of Etherium, and 2 Etched Champion, and I'm not sure which of the 6, and in what amounts that I want to run as my "big guys".
I would highly suggest champion because of his pro colors. With a control variant your seeking this is the perfect guy. Not to mention he is a list in the deck because he runs through creatures most people play. I like revoked but I would drop 1 and put in a third champion when u can get one. I'd say run 4 if possible but I only run 3 so I ant tell u that lol. 3 has been great for me but if I had a 4th I'm sure I could find room. Once he hits the table people are usually like ah crap.
And with the cards u run, I'd suggest a play set or a minimum 3 ancient tombs. Again, since u r wanting to be control, a turn 1 chalice for zero is awesome. I beat show and tell that way. I know it purs a hauler to some of your cards but it's totally worth it. I'd drop either your basics or citadels IMO.
Wastelands are around but with opals and springleaf drums hey aren't as big an issue as u might think.
Hmm. Just noticed u don't run opals. I assume u run mantle instead? Is this for budget reasons? Otherwise I would e adopt say drop mantles for opals.
All I got for now and hope this helped
Been playing affinity since it came into being and could talk about it for quite a while.

Okay, that's what I was leaning towards, since I can see Ravager being a lightning rod for removal as soon as he hits the table.
Modern is the format that I'm messing around with more at the moment, so I'll probably hold off on the Tombs till after I finish my playset of Ravagers and Champions/ grab the Opals.
Yeah, I'm in college so don't really have the income for Opals yet, but they're really the only expensive cards I want, and they'd go in both format variants of my deck! (:
Thanks for the help!
I'm really interested in the deck since I can have the control aspect and still be able to go aggro in the same deck.
I go pure aggro and worry about control in board but that's me. Too much control can slow the deck down and it could cost u game 1 when affinity should almost always win game 1
Tangle Wire is not control. Played correctly in the deck it's a tempo play that allow you to aggro race your opponent, because they lack the mana to interact with your key cards. It works in Affinity, because Affinity is unique among aggro decks in that most of its creatures are not threats by themselves and require a Plating, Ravager, or Master. Countering or removing these key cards can often stop you dead in your tracks. Wire is protection for your key cards. It only plays out as control against combo decks where the mana denial shuts them down for a few turns.

- Master gives a small boost straight away, is a threat himself, and has a big butt.
- Overseer is weaker, takes a turn to activate, yet can keep powering up your guys.
Which is better for most matchups?
U Merfolk | GR Tron | WUR Jeskai Control | WBG Abzan Company
EDH:
G Ezuri, Renegade Leader, Fighting for Rivendell
WU Brago, King Eternal, Long Live the King
WUBRG Scion of the Ur-Dragon, Worship the Dragon
Most Legacy players don't even consider Overseer for serious, competitive Affinity builds. It's either Master of Etherium or Arcbound Ravager as your secondary beatstick. Your primary threat is Etched Champion. Always.

I'm definitely a huge fan of the control variant of the deck, and here's what I have at the moment.
2x Arcbound Ravager
4x Memnite
4x Ornithopter
3x Phyrexian Revoker
4x Signal Pest
4x Vault Skirge
3x Chalice of the Void
4x Cranial Plating
3x Paradise Mantle
4x Springleaf Drum
3x Tangle Wire
Land (16)
4x Darksteel Citadel
2x Island
1x Plains
4x Seat of the Synod
1x Swamp
4x Vault of Whispers
2x Spell Pierce
Sorcery (4)
4x Thoughtcast
I have a few questions though. I have 2 Arcbound Ravager, 2 Master of Etherium, and 2 Etched Champion, and I'm not sure which of the 6, and in what amounts that I want to run as my "big guys".
