Is hive mind still that big of a deal? I've been into the alot of modern zoo (Since deck just crushes there until wizards have the good since to unban step...)
Won a game last legacy with turn 1 goblin guide, turn 2 goblin guide, goblin guide. then price of progress. thought that game though incredably lucky was kinda funny.
I've been running my zoo for a while and I won my touri so Id thought Id share the list. Its ment to be fast and abuse burn.
I run 7 Mountains in my build and I play 2 Fireblast.
5 Seems a little lean.
I've had only one problem with it over the course of around 50 or so games (games 2/3 not included) and that was a problem when drawing 2 of them. Eventually I was able to use both of them anyways that game, so ive really encountered no problem.
I'm relatively new to the format, but I am wondering why I've seen Pridemage dropped from most lists (mainboard, at least). Has he currently lost his utility due to what other decks people are playing? Here's the list I'm testing; any suggestions and/or critiques are appreciated:
I haven't constructed a sideboard yet, but it'll start with 4x Red Elemental Blast and at least 2 Teeg's (maybe 3). I just see a lot less Sylvan Libraries and Qasali Pridemages in current lists and I am wondering if there is a reason for it.

I'd take out 2 Fetches and play 2 more duals, probably a Taiga and a Savannah.

I've actually been wondering the same thing. My guess is people are taking out Pridemages and other utility to gain access to Teeg mainboard and other aggressive cards like Goblin Guide. Assuming there is a lot of NO RUG in these larger tournaments, it makes sense to have Teeg MB instead of SB. That's the only answer I can come up with though and was hoping others could chime in.
Anyway, I've currently been running a list similar to Pat Cox's (I run two less Fetches for two Wastelands) and noticed that recent Zoo decks that finish Top 8 have become more aggressive with their one drops (i.e. Goblin Guide) and taken out the utility cards such as Sylvans and Pridemages. My sideboard is different than his and I run 3 Krosan Grip in my sideboard, but it still means I usually lose the first match against decks like CounterTop since it can easily lock me down given how many one drops I have. It also means more targets for Mental Misstep.
With that said, in the meta I play in, there is a lot of NO RUG (3 - 4) and sprinklings of CounterTop, Affinity, Merfolk, Reanimator, Hive Mind and UW Landstill/Stoneblade. I beat Merfolk and Affinity outright and 50/50 Hive Mind, NO RUG and Reanimator, but CounterTop and UW always give me a lot of trouble. Does anyone have recommendations on what I should change in the above list to better deal with things or is playing super aggressively the way to go?
How many Horizon Canopy would you advise is ideal for Zoo? 2 or 4?
Depends how many Knights you are running. I would recommend 0-1 if none, and 1-2 if you are running Knights. Any more dilutes Wild Nacatl (and Kird Ape/Loam Lion if you are running them).

You need to go bigger to beat CounterTop, either by adding Stoneforge Mystic/Batterskull or the pre-Misstep Big Zoo decks that run Noble Hierarch, Elspeth, and more Knights/Green Suns. I don't know how good the Big Zoo decks are nowadays with Mental Misstep but I've done pretty well with Stoneforge Zoo vs control since T2 Mystic just makes life really hard for them, as well as Library/Green Sun.

I guess it's rock/paper/scissor then. I went more aggressive so I could start beating NO RUG, Hive Mind, Reanimator decks that put me under a more aggressive clock (i.e. game needs to be over or close to by turn 4). By going "Big Zoo" will I be hurting my chances against decks I currently beat or split with?
Then again, I guess that's the beauty of (balanced) Magic. There's no deck that can beat all decks. If it comes down to percentages I may just stay aggressive if it means I beat a larger percentage of decks.

The list I posted a couple pages ago is closer to Big Zoo then Fast Zoo posts a positive percentage against aggro and control.
By doing so however the deck is very vulnerable to combo decks. However it doesn't mean that the match-ups are hopeless. Reanimator isn't that difficult because of Karakas, Maze, and Batterskull to race them (I've raced a T2 Inkwell with this deck).
Hive Mind is obviously super difficult but I've gotten pretty lucky and haven't lost to them (2-0 in matches so far). You just have to get either a fast start, but if you're expecting Hive Mind, throw in Angel's Grace in the board. That and Karakas should at least make it a little easier to deal with the deck.
Vs NO RUG, the one thing I hated about fast Zoo is that the wheels start to fall apart when they start Green Sunning for Goyfs, but having Goyfs, Knight + Green Sun as well as Stoneforge make the Goyf war easier to win. The Progenitus war is difficult but with Batterskull and Sword of Body and Mind (and Helix occasionally), you can race Progenitus.
Big Zoo/Stoneblade Zoo are much easier for me to adapt to the aggro or control route so I don't think it works for everyone but I like utility so I like this version much better than the fast Zoo variants.

Thank you for the list. I currently do not own all those cards, but it'll be something for me to look for when trading. I've noticed in some SBs that people run cards to be able to transform from small/fast Zoo to a mid-range Zoo. Probably for mirror matches and Control as you say.
I wasn't aware that anyone was still trying to play a countertop build of any sort.
I just don't see them at all anymore.
Well each region is different. I thought the same thing, but this person consistently plays it and it does reasonably well since there is a lot of stuff run that is vulnerable to massive control (i.e. Hive Mind, Reanimator, NO RUG).
Related to the B&R discussion in the forum above, but how do you feel about Zoo running Mental Misstep to protect it's important one drops? I personally think it's better to just compensate with more aggro/creatures and tourney data seems to support it, but one could argue MM protects you from A) MM itself, B) StP/Path and can proactively stop C) Brainstorm/Ponder.
I have a question for Karakas, The card itself says Legend, but on the magiccards.info or when you click on the card link, the ruling on the side says "Legendary Creature?"
finished a legacy tournament today. It's been a quiet day at the Zoo. This tournament's meta was too difficult for Zoo as most decks were Combos.
G1 lost to Aggroloam (1-2). Couldn't burn/kill him fast enough and he was able to keep killing my lands with Wasteland and then Seismic Assults all my creatures and me. His Countryside Crusher was huge. 18/18 LOL.
G2 (0-2) lost to this UR combo deck that used splinter twin to enchant on this 1/4 blue creature (with Flash) that whenever he enters the battlefield, you can tap/untap a permanent. So couldn't stop that. Used up all 4 my pridemage. Still wasn't good enough. I thought 4 Pridemage was good enough.
G3 lost (1-2) to UW Stoneblade. game 1 against him took like 12 turns. It was a long game 1, but his battleskull kicked my behind hard. I had to use like 3 PtE on his Germ. Couldn't find Pridemage when I needed him. Game 2 was easier as i was able to get my quick beater and got him in T3/4. Game 3, had to mulligen down to 4 cards. had to keep that one land and never saw another land.
G4 lost (1-2) to NO RUG. game 1, Proggy destroyed me. game 2, Teeg destroyed him. He showed me his hand after game 2. He had 2 NO, 2 FoW in his hands. He wasn't able to draw submerge or bolt my Teeg. game 3, i got owned by vendilion clique.
I feel so discouraged now playing zoo. Most of these games, i got them down to like 5-7 life and then their combo starts. Zoo needs to win by like T4/5 otherwise it's rough.

I know the terravore doesn't belong in there. But i really like that guy. I figure everyone plays fetch lands. But yeah, he eats up removal easily. I never had problem getting two greens for him. All my fetches can fetch any duals. I felt like I had bad luck draws all day that day.
I think i might just need two more burns, such as Helixes or Fireblast
My friend told me to name the deck, "Caged Animals." So when i lost so badly that evening, i sarcastically blamed him for the name.
So i wanna test it out with speed. I took out the Vores and KotR and replaced it with 4x Mental Misstep.

blue. Also I run 4 helix, 4 bolt, 4 chain, 2 fireblasts. It sees me through usually
It feels like in order to win, I need to run at least blue. It makes me wanna make a blue deck or multi-colored deck with blue.
I'd have to agree with the previous advice. I debated running Mental Misstep as well, but instead opted to run more one drops and recently was able to start beating control decks that gave me trouble like UW Stoneblade.
I ran a list similar to Pat Cox's last iteration of Zoo, but changed the 4 Goblin Guides to 4 Qasali Pridemages main board since there are enough powerful enchantments in my meta. That's still Kird Ape, Wild Nacatl, Loam Lion and Grim Lavamancer for one drops though.
I run 7 Mountains in my build and I play 2 Fireblast.
