Hello!
I recently met a true magic connoisseur with several decks in most formats and he asked if I wanted to try and play some legacy before the FNM started. Sure, I said, not having played Legacy before. I got to try out his U/B Reanimator deck for a game. It felt like it had immensely powerful cards, but it didn't quite tick for me.
I then got to borrow his D&T deck and I fell in love during the first game!
It felt soo good, the deck felt strong without any prior legacy experience, but yet like it has so much potential for an experienced pilot. I am currently completely sold on the archetype, but not quite on an exact list, which is where you come in.
My new long-term goal will be trading for the cards needed for a D&T deck, and I don't want to be wasting time and money getting cards I wont end up ever using.
This is what I've been thinking about getting, what would you change? Am I making any glaring mistakes?
this looks like a fairly standard death and taxes list and will serve you well getting into legacy. The only thing I can see you getting alongside this are more options for the sideboard like glowrider and the like, usually these are cheap and are just options to adjust your list to your meta.
The mainboard is fine but if you are serious about the archetype consider where you are playing and get more options for your board accordingly. Some things I would reccomend are path to exile (if your meta runs next to no basics), ghost quarter (for the same reason), Glowrider (if your meta is dominated by fast combo, high tide and the likes) helm of obediance (in case you know you wont win with aggro and need a combo finisher with rest in peace, say they run moat and something to protect it), disenchants (deceptivly good for it's price and availability), banishing light (if you find yourself wanting more O-rings in your meta and you want to dodge things like surgical and meddling mage), eidolon of rhetoric (once again for a combo heavy meta and say ethersworn isnt enough or it dies to something like bolt, this is also a great card against artificers intuition and eggs should you ever see it), tivadar's crusade (in case goblins becomes a thing again), and unexpectantly absent (fantastic removal in general and if you ever find yourself unable to take care of a permanent easily with targeted type hate this might be your best bet)
their are no real mistakes in this list, it all depends on your meta your mainboard choices. But this list can confidently bring you into legacy no problem.
We have a good thread about DnT in the Established boards and you're welcome to join us! :^)
Death and Taxes is a deck that requires a lot of meta knowledge to build and play properly, but it's immensely rewarding when you win games with it! I see no big problems with your main and sideboard choice but there are many tweaks you NEED to make to adjust to your local meta. There's no catch-all DnT build.
For example:
- Maindeck SotL is mainly geared towards a heavy blue/combo meta with few midrange threats. It's usually the meta of large events but it may be very ill suited for small environments where people just play their pet decks since you're not gonna play against 5 rounds of Omnitell. There are better and more resilient choices for the maindeck.
- Only use Brimaz if you need help against UR/Grixis Delver decks specifically, it's a narrow finisher. He gets stonewalled by token producers and Goyf, so it's pretty bad against BUG and RUG.
- Kor Firewalker is only good against Burn and UR Delver. Not really worth running them unless your meta is flooded with them.
- Manriki Gusari isn't ideal because of many small reasons you will learn once you play more with the deck, but suffice to say Disenchant would probably be a better choice.

Not sure if trolling, none of those cards are good at all except in very specific strategies, like Ghost Arbiter.

Awesome, thanks for the explanation on some of the card choices! I will mostly be playing in smaller local events (maximum 30 players from what I've heard), so I think I'll switch a MB SotL for a second Mangara or a fourth Flickerwisp.
I'll still try the Brimaz for a while, since I already have one in my collection.
From now on I'll post in the "main" D&T thread though, thanks all!
