Hey guys, ive been playing mtg for 1 year now, mostly casual play and now i wanna step into LEGACY.
I wanna make an ELF deck and ive been netdecking a lot trying to find good ideas.
A good deck i found and liked the idea was this one, by WILLIAM JENSEN
Sideboard
3 Acidic Slime
4 Strangleroot Geist
3 Tree of Redemption
2 Ranger's Guile
3 Garruk Relentless
But, since this was STANDART in 2013, i was thinking about good idead to get this one better for legacy, improvements, changes, or even a totally new idea.
Take a look here. There are some budget Elves deck in this topic, you can use one of them to make your first step into Legacy. And then, if you want to keep playing elves and invest more money, basically, you just have to buy 4x Gaea's Cradle, 4x Natural Order, 8-10 fetches, 4x Deathrite Shaman and a good sideboard.
First of all I would like to thank you for the great info on those posts.
I would like to say ta, after researching a lot about elves, i've foun that maybe elves is not what i want to play. Maybe what I was looking for was a more Mana-Ramp deck, rather than a tribal elves one.
Well, after reading your link SPOOKY, i really liked the idea behind the INFECT deck and the AFFINITY one.
What is your opinion about these 2 decks? Are 2 both goods/competitive? Do you think BG Infect is better then UG Infect?
I can help you with a mana ramp deck if that is what you want.
Affinity is tough, because if you check the updated prices it is actually more expensive nowadays (I'm in the middle of updating that primer with new prices, deck lists etc). The sligh affinity deck is now around $230 and the regular affinity deck is about $350. Does this change your desire to play the deck?
I think if you are not on a budget B/G infect is better than U/G infect. However, I also think that the mono black infect control deck is better on a budget than B/G infect. Did you like that list at all?
I really loved all those lists. Starting on magic and seeing that many options is like a kid on a candy shop1 So I'm really lost here.
I think i have a budget around $200-250, so i wanna make a fun deck, while been able to be competitive.
To be honest, the ones the seems more fun to me are Infect (not knowing wich one is better), MANA RAMP and maybe something like Blue control splashing another color for other tools (like UR control).
What would you sugest?
The best decks possible for 200-250 USD are probably...
Dredge
Landless Dredge
Oops All Spells
Burn
Mono Blue Tempo
Soldier Stompy
Mono Black Reanimator
Maybe some others, but these are what come to mind.
U/R can be done and it can be very strong, but not in a control shell. It would be more aggro.
As far as which infect deck is better, I would say the mono black control infect (black plague) is better. It's been a while since I played either deck though. Mono black is good against control decks, while green black is just meant for speed.
Mana Ramp depends on a few things, but Urza Tron and Weird Elves are the two decks presented in the primer that would best fit that description.
Monastery Swiftspear is a potential addition to the list. Also, Treasure Cruise may be really good, even without Fetchlands. You would have to test it.
Another deck I've found VERY interesting is this one:
Krark-Clan Ironworks - Modern | Taisuke Ishii, Pro Tour Born of the Gods
Lands (20)
1 Plains
1 City of Brass
1 Adarkar Wastes
1 Tendo Ice Bridge
1 Glimmervoid
3 Darksteel Citadel
4 Urza's Mine
4 Urza's Power Plant
4 Urza's Tower
Creatures (3)
3 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
Spells (37)
4 Krark-Clan Ironworks
4 Chromatic Sphere
4 Chromatic Star
4 Mox Opal
4 Ichor Wellspring
3 Mind Stone
4 Prophetic Prism
2 Remand
2 Thirst for Knowledge
4 Open the Vaults
2 Tezzeret the Seeker
Is there any viable substitute for Mox Opal, Emrakul and one Tezzeret? The rest is fine in my budget!
I would not play the Ironworks list without Opal or Emrakul. They are in there for a specific reason and really make the deck tick.
The Kiln Fiend list above is okay, just a few changes to make. Get rid of Wee Dragonauts, they are too slow. Play a 4th cyclops and some counter instead. Stubborn Denial always has ferocity when you have a fiend or cyclops in play, so it can be used to protect them. Electrolyze and Izzet Charm are too slow, as are Izzet Guildgate. I would play something like this instead.
Not only I have a lot of this cards, but also i really liked the idea on them. I'll try it then!
Have a question tho: do you think Flamekin Harbinger is worth playing? Also, where should i put Artfull Dodge and Assoult Strobe? Also, any other addition?
Since that deck will cost almost nothing to me, would help making a Mana-ramp or Tron now, so I'll have 2 cool options?
I'm sorry I completely blanked on Strobe, and I even own the deck! Yeah, Assault Strobe is a must.
Artful Dodge could be played, and if you liked it better it would replace Distortion Strike. I like strike better though, because when you are given the chance to re-use it it is free. Also, it gives an additional +1 damage. Shadow Rift is another option that draws you a card.
Treasure Cruise is iffy in the deck when you don't have fetchlands, but you had one slot left, and its worth a shot.
Monastery Swiftspear is another option for the deck that could replace the cyclops. At that point Stubborn denial would probably best be replaced with Apostle's Blessing, which can serve as a protection spell and potentially something to make your guy unblockable.
I can certainly help with the mana ramp deck. There are a few ways to go about ramping. What did you like best? You have artifact ramp, Elf ball, Wall ball, Urza Tron, 12-post, and good ol' fashion land grabbing.
The problem with Nivmagus Elemental is that it seems to play more as a combo deck, an agressive one. But, if i chose to play this way, then i rather play Infect, wich i think it's more fun.
As for mana-ramp, so far what seems cooler to me is 12-post or the elves. I just dunno how to male the 12-post works, wich creatures to use and what color to chose. There are really some good colorless options out there, for a nice price. For exemple, Wurmcoil Engine, Solemn Simulacron, all arctifacts creatures, It That Betrays, and all other Eldrazi that are not those 3 expensive. I really like high CMC creatures of all colors too. A lot of options here, just need a direction!
As for the elves, i have the same doubts. One good point is that I have one copy of Craterhoof Behemoth and one copy of Primogenitus. I really like those 2 giant beats. I also enjoy that Kalonian Hydra, or any other Hydra.
What can you tell me about these 2 decks? What is the difference in playstyle and the feeling for them?
12 post almost always uses Primeval titan and the eldrazi creatures, specifically, the expensiveones. You can replace them with some of the other eldrazi, or other large creatures, but the deck will not be as strong. Wurmcoil Engine could certainly be played, but for $20 you are getting a big hit to your budget for 1 copy.
Elves can be used to cast huge creatures fairly reliantly, and if you can get your hands on 4 Natural Order, things can get fun. Most hydras are not competitive, though.
Elves would be much more creature based, which means you are more prone to losing to removal and burn. You are faster than other ramp decks, but limited on your colors, and weak to cards that a lot of people are playing to hate other decks.
12-post can is a little more resilient and varied, but is much slower. You can play a mono green version, a G/x version, or a "mono brown" version.
Well, Natural Order is too expensive here, but Summoners Pact and Green Sun's Zenith are affordables. I really loved all ideas you gave me, so would you mind giving me an exemple of Elves, one 12-post Mono Green and one 12-post Mono Brown, so i can visualize how does each of them looks like? Also, is 12-post more efficient than Urza?
This one is a MUD version that uses Metalworker as well. This list can be upgraded over time by replacing the Urza lands with 12-post lands. Right now, though, it's about $250.
eaxh of these lists can be manipulated by replacing the Urza Land base (which is much cheaper to buy) with the 12-post land base (which is stronger). I can also tinker with these to make them cheaper if needed, but they would be less powerful.
That mono-green deck seems pretty solid. I liked the idea of having a nice "mana ramp" base, so i can upgrade it later on as i have more budget. Would you think that deck is more effective than an elves one? Would u mind suggesting me a nice elves deck, keeping in mind I already have 1 Craterhoof and 1 Primogenitus? I though of something with 4 Green Sun's Zenith and maybe some Summoner's Pact. Also, is there any UW Control deck one can make in a budget?
Oh, and thank you very much for wasting your time with me, I am really enjoyng all your tips and advices!
I would love to help you, I just need the free time to get my thoughts together. Figure within a day or two I will have some stuff for ya! Sorry about the wait, I've got a busy busy schedule right now.
EDIT:
This is the elf list I would suggest to you. I think it is better than the tron list.
If you can eventually afford Gaea's Cradle I would add that in, and Natural Orders in the board as well. Sorry this took me so long, pretty busy lately!

There are a few elf decks to choose from, as well as a slew of other strategies. Let me know if you have any questions on any of them.
