I'm thinking about building a zoo deck, but I can't really afford the fetchlands. Is there a way to build a zoo deck without them (and also without tarmogoyf).
I'm willing to pay for the shocklands, and i own several of the zoo staples: wild nacatl, loam lion, kird ape.
I am open to all suggestions.
I really don't think you would be able to make any kind of viable zoo deck on a budget, at least, not a 3 color one. Shocks are really only acceptable in combo decks for the most part (especially in 3 color decks anyways) and really, its fetches that make shocks worth it. I think if you want to start off with something close to zoo, you should check out this gem.
This deck plays a lot like zoo, but only uses 2 of the colors. You could easily replace some of the r/g budget lands with the shocks if you wanted, which would make kird ape more viable as well. The deck's mainstay is using tinder wall, burning tree, and bloodbraid elf to get a myr superion out as soon as turn one. You can also use the tinder wall to cast an early rampager or bloodbraid as early as turn 2. Nowadays I might consider replacing the colossal mights with something else, perhaps more burn, but the deck is very strong as is. If you have chain lightning hey should definitely be included. This deck is certainly a good start to zoo, especially 1-drop zoo, and will get you in the right play style as well.
