Hello all. I have a $200 budget to add on top of my current collection to build a deck to get into Legacy. I currently have all Modern decks (pre-DRS banning) with the exception of Merfolk and Tron. I also have 4x Stoneforge Mystic, 4x Green Sun's Zenith.
I'd prefer not to play a glass-cannon combo deck, something more fair would probably be my style, and I am a competitive-natured. I've been looking at Nic Fit/Pod or a budget version of Death and Taxes. Wondering if there's something better. My local meta off the top of my head is currently (1-each): UW Miracles, Jund, Esper Deathblade, UB Reanimator, Pox, 12post, Oops! All Spells!, Merfolk, Elves, Burn
Any ideas what could get me the farthest with my $200 to start?
In the past I've liked to play control decks in Standard and Modern. But more specifically: decks that give me lots of options or have a lot of cool interactions. Casting some Brainstorms or Sensei's Divining Top really appeals to me. At the same time, a deck like Death and Taxes also seems like it has a lot of neat interactions that appeal to me. Obviously, those decks have pretty expensive manabases and blue decks have Forces on top of it, so it's something I'll have to eventually work towards. Perhaps there are other builds that can work towards it. I put together a BW list for now using my Dark Confidants and Stoneforge Mystics. I can answer more questions, but that's a start.
And bonus -- It's a little janky, but I quite enjoyed playing this a bit when it was in standard because of all the clever little synergies: Caleb Durward's HippoBlade from PT Dark Ascension: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms4W-SobFAs
If you like Jund in Modern, Jund in Legacy is just like that except it has a bunch of really cool tools like Hymn to Tourach, Bloodbraid Elf, Punishing Fire plus Grove of the Burnwillows. Shocklands will certainly hurt you though because Jund is very mana-intensive. Once you get some more $ to put into the deck you can buy Wastelands and then work on duals or some better fetchlands.
Yes, I quite enjoyed Jund in Modern. I didn't even get a chance to play when Bloodbraid Elf was legal! Unfortunately my mana base is pretty lacking for this one. As you said, the mana is pretty intensive. I wish I actually put together R/G Tron when Grove of the Burnwillows was only $10. Now they're like $35 a piece. I suppose I don't have to necessarily run the Punishing Fire package to begin with, can stick with Lightning Bolts, but the virtual card advantage I'm sure is very important for the deck.

Jund is probably better off without Punishing-Grove in a TNN metagame. That deck wants 1 Taiga, not 5. The bigger issue is picking up Wastelands and Duals on a $200 budget.
Affinity with Thoughtseize and Spell Pierce might be the way to go, at least initially. Unless you can afford to trade off a decent chunk of your Modern stock for Duals/Wastelands/FOWs. In that case, you have a variety of options.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
But I agree with focusing on the deck you really want. The bad news is, legacy is expensive. The good news is, the cards rarely loose value so if you tire of it, ebay can usually solve your problems.
