Dug my cards out of the closet and found my old Berserk Stompy deck. I just want to tweak it a little and add a sideboard to goof around at the local store.
I put this in budget as I don't want to drop a fortune on new cards.
Sideboard is were I really need help. I really don't have any idea what is being played in the meta, as this is my first time at the place. Maybe Winter orb or Tormod's crypt?
I struggle with this as I feel like if a card isn't capable of also being a creature or pump spell in addition to utility it is slowing me down.
All thoughts and ideas welcome; my only stipulations are that I would like to keep it mono green and I don't want to drop a bunch of cash.
Infect Stompy has more or less replaced traditional Berserk Stompy because it takes less damage for you to win on the spot. The primer linked in the above post should help you out a ton.
There's also 9-land stompy with drops a lot of your forests for stuff like Land Grant and Quirion Ranger. But, I don't think you need to drastically drop your land that much unless you like those cards.
The only pump spell I don't like in your 60 would be Old Krosa, which I think is outclassed by a newer card, Groundswell.
All of these I'm mentioning (with the exception of Nettle Sentinel, who is about $1-$2 per copy) shouldn't cost you more than a buck or so for a playset.
As for your sideboard: I'd say a good gameplan for an unknown meta based on current trends is graveyard hate (Tormod's works, there's also Grafdigger's Cage, which I like more) any sort of draw hate you can find, artifact hate and then True-Name Nemesis hate (which I'm not sure what that means in green.)
Thanks for the replies; I will check out the infect idea
In the meantime, does anyone have any thoughts on Uktabi Drake? I realize that it's fairly situational, but it does pose a potential first turn kill, unless i'm missing something.
Uktabi drake is basically a flying shock in green. You'll rarely be able to pay the mana for its keeping, so running something like the pit skulk seems more reasonable.
It's true that you can't pay the echo cost, but it's a excellent finisher, because no one expects it. With bersek it's easy to swing for 10+ with flying and trample there's little one can do.
This is because no other creature in this kind of deck has haste, so it suffers a lot against removal, because the opponent always have a 1 turn clock to try something. The worst thing can happen is holding tons of pump spells with no creatures on board. Uktaby Drake can make some very unexpected turnarounds.
The only reason I would run the Uktabi Drake would be the potential to deal near to or fatal damage on the 1st turn. I'm sure the percentage on getting the 6-7 cards needed in the opening hand are low though, and it would assume the opponent doesn't have any answers in hand.
I agree that I would likely never pay the echo on the Drake, but he can still be a vehicle for my pump spells the turn he is played, and he becomes a good Berserk target as he will be sacrificed anyway.
So are the Rancor and Garruk's Companion (or pit skulk) that much better than Uktabi and Mutagenic Growth? Is the card advantage I may be giving my opponent too great? or is it worth the change for potential craziness?
Don't remove rancor, it's one of the best cards in the deck. Green has no easy way to draw cards, so rancor helps a lot because it returns to you, so you don't get 2 for 1.
And to me Uktabi Drake is a card that you use when you're loosing. You dealt 10 dmg early game but got wiped out. Probably you lost this game, because either the opponent has board presence or he has removal for your creatures. But with drake you could at least make some play that can win you the game on the same turn, not giving the opponent a card and untapping.
Hey all! I recently dug out my old Stompy deck after a 10 year MTG hiatus and I'm lookinf for some advice on how to upgrade it. I've already done some research and some playtesting but a lot of things remain up in the air for now. For starters, here's the deck as it looks right now:
So, questions abound! First, I've seen arguments made both for and against Land Grant and I'm debating whether that fact that it thins my deck makes it worth playing or if I should just swap them out for 3 extra forest. I think my beaters are mostly a good bunch but I'm uncertain about my mana dorks; the Elves and Ranger allow me to cast more stuff each turn but that means they're never really attacking and they're only 1/1's. I obviously run a very low curve so I'm wondering whether they're necessary at all, and if so, should I keep them at 4 apiece. As far as pump spells are concerned, I've stayed away from Groundswell thus far since I play so few lands but perhaps if I modify the deck they might make a good addition. I like the fact that I can essentially cast Mutagenic Growth for free as well but +2/+2 seems perhaps a little on the weak side.
Essentially, the main deck is open to all suggestions except removing Rancor Also, I don't currently have the cash for the Berserks in my paper version of the deck, so any tips on what's best to put in its place in the mean time would be appreciated (I know it's a really important card but for now I'm only looking to have some fun with friends and maybe play some FNM so the deck doesn't have to be Tier 1) The sideboard is pretty generic, since I haven't played in years I don't know exactly what I'm siding against so I just went with some removal of ***** that can get in my way plus the Orbs for decks that run lots of lands.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Your team of attackers is pretty stock, but you might want to check out Rogue Elephant, Nettle Sentinel and Jungle Lion.

I would be replacing Rancor with Mutagenic Growth for the potential +2 for no mana and replacing my Garruk's Companion slot with the Uktabi Drake.
