So...yeah. I know that quality Reanimator decks are practically required to splash blue so that their reanimations actually fire off but...I'm stopping myself from doing that for now since that'd mean getting FoW and we all know about that one's price tag.
I basically just slapped something together out of four Graveborns and a few of my cards lying around for some quick playtesting. First things first, I need suggestions on how many lands to run -- I know it can fly with less than 20 since the spells are pretty cheap, but just how few?
Second suggestion would be what creatures to put in here. I know Iona's a sure addition once I can nab a copy, as well as three of Jinny G. Possibly the other praetors as well, I suppose.
I've also been told that to make up for the lack of counters, I should put in some disruption like Hymn to Tourach and such (especially since Duress is already in there). If I go that route, how much of the deck should be taken up by the discard stuff? Does this need Phyrexian Arena for more card draw?
In my personal opinion, unless you have an engine to fuel it, probably not. I'd rather just run reanimate and have it stay around, myself. Admittedly, it's risky as hell vs. decks packing red, but still, you get the ability to just nail them afterward.

Makes sense. I was under the impression that doing that'd involve bending backwards to build the deck around the big Eldrazis and that'd hurt the deck's overall efficiency.
Anyway, after this weekend the deck got some minor changes...but I'm considering the sideboard now.
Note that the current sideboard's pretty much filler until I get better cards (i.e. those Distresses will eventually become either Inquisition of Kozileks or Hymn to Tourachs). Some of the less appropriate creatures (i.e. Oona and Vulturous Zombie) are just there because they're not in my EDH deck and having them in my Reanimator's deck box saves space.
I don't know about a proper sideboard, but you really want 4 hymn to tourach main deck. It's mono black and a crime not to!
Otherwise, I would think that -1 zombie infestation, +1 putrid imp. It comes down one turn sooner and can attack itself. It also doesn't require two cards to chuck to it, which is a huge plus in it's favor.
Now, I see a lot of interesting components to this deck in here. Have you considered crossing it with an old deck known as friggorid? You would need some ichorid, and maybe some bloodghast, but otherwise, it would be like crossing dredge and reanimator. It's not a terrible strategy, and might give you some more game against decks that can kill your beaters.
Minor nitpick again, but why don't you have a pro white/blue beater? Akroma, angel of fury is a fine reanimator target that can just stick to a control deck, which you should be happy doing.
The deck has some serious consistency issues. Sometimes it just doesn't have that last combo piece. I'm thinking of cutting some discard to fit a tutor engine in, like Infernal Tutors and something that lets me get Hell-bent, or Beseech The Queen, or even Enlightened Tutor for either Animate Dead or Zombie Infestation. The White splash seems decent here, since it gives us Swords/Path and answers to Leyline of the Void / Artifacts.

Yep, that's definitely going in once I can find a set.:D

I've been considering dropping the Zombie Infestations altogether actually, so far I've yet to be in a situation when I'd want to cast one.

I'll look into that deck, thanks!

More due to lack of cards than anything. Iona is definitely going into the deck and I'm still on the lookout for other quality fatties. I'm pretty tempted to drop in the other praetors: Sheoldred, Urabask and Vorinclex.
Bought 4 Graveborns myself, and I've been trying to build a similar deck. Here's my current build:
*snip*

Pretty interesting. This leads to my next question: does black have any consistent low-costed means of getting around the aforementioned Leyline and artifacts (a.k.a. the usual suspects for GY hate) or will I really be forced to splash another color?
I don't know of any efficient black card that lets us destroy enchantments and artifacts, so a splash is probably necessary to get rid of those things. Tried removing 4 Duress and 2 Buried Alive for 3 Infernal Tutor and 3 Sickening Dreams. Seems to work alright, but it's still not perfect. I think Beseech The Queen is better than Infernal Tutor in this deck.
edit:
Tried my build out against some admittedly bad decks earlier with some changes, and it seems that the deck needs some way of protecting the fatties. Apostle's Blessing is probably ok, but two life can be pretty hard to pay sometimes.
Hehe working on a monoblack reanimator myself now that we have all these cool cards from graveborn.
Here is what I'm working with atm.
21x Swamps
1x Polluted Mire
4x Dark Ritual
Graveyard feeders:
2x Entomb
4x Buried Alive
2x Hidden Horror (they just go well with a 1st turn Ritual and fatty can switch to 4 Putrid Imps I suppose)
2x Putird Imp
Fatties:
1x Avatar of Woe
1x Terastodon
1x Crosis the Purger
1x Blazing Archon
1x Teneb the Harvester
1x Bogarden Hellkite
1x Inkwell Leviathan
1x Sheoldred Whispering One
1x It That Betrays
1x Sphinx of the Steel Wind
Utility:
2x Sickening Dreams
1x Demonic Tutor (switch to a Rhystic Tutor or Infernal Tutor)
1x Damnation

Regarding Platinum Emperion, can you cast Reanimate when he's out?
Also with Artisan of Kozilek, does his "when cast" ability trigger off a reanimation effect? I'm thinking no, but just checking.
I'm just waiting to acquire some better creatures, and I guess some proper discard (i.e. the aforementioned Tourachs). The blue or green splash will come in once I'm sure of what to get; while a lot of the artifact-busting green stuff (i.e. Beast Within, Putrefy) is easy to cast in EDH, it might be just slightly overcosted for non-EDH play.
I think so. The life loss is an effect of the spell and not a cost, so having him out actually makes your Reanimates practically free (okay, 1 mana but still). Similar to how Phyrexian Arena and/or Bloodgift Demon essentially become free card draw with the Emperion out.
Also with Artisan of Kozilek, does his "when cast" ability trigger off a reanimation effect? I'm thinking no, but just checking.
I think so, since it's an ETB effect. Buried Alive into a Reanimate with the Artisan, Bladewing the Risen and another dragon for good times?

Artisan only triggers when it's actually cast; it won't trigger off of a reanimation spell, sadly.
Anyway, I definitely agree with Hymn to Tourach being in the deck. It's just stupid good and can buy you time to dig for your pieces.
Speaking of digging, Beseech the Queen sounds pretty good in this deck, since all the spells you need to find are in the 1-3 mana range anyway, so even casting it first turn off a Ritual can get you a card you need.
I'd also consider running more Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, as in like, 3. He's amazing and one of the key reasons that Reanimator is a top tier strategy in Legacy in general. The sheer amount of card advantage he gives you is just too much for most decks to fight against, not to mention the whole Mind Twisting them.
Granted, you don't have ways of protecting him that aren't reactive (i.e. Counterspells and such), so you'd have to slow roll a bit until you can be sure they don't have the removal.

...sweet Lord. I didn't know this and last time I played EDH with someone, we both thought he'd fire off of a tresholded Stitch Together.

Initially I had three of him and less of the other creatures. I noticed a lot of decklists pretty much have "1x Elesh-norn, 3x Jin-Gitaxias" as a consistent thing between them so I'll probably go back to that.
It's true, Jin is the best. Even when he gets killed, he just puts you so far ahead that it's insane. It's just a little hard to Reanimate him again because he costs 10 life.
Yeah, for the :symu::symb: Reanimator, which I play, Jin-Gitaxias is my go-to reanimation target most of the time, unless another target wrecks a certain match-up completely, (like Elesh Norn against aggro, or Iona against burn/other mono-colored decks, etc).
I even went up to four of him at one point since he can be pitched to Force of Will and I pretty much want to see him in 90% of games.

Ok since I can't find Beseech The Queen and Enlightened Tutor is obviously non-budget, I use Shred Memory instead. It can tutor for Exhume, Animate Dead, Hymn to Tourach, and my favorite: Gerrard's Verdict! Postboard it could grab Apostle's Blessing to protect the fatties.

I gotta ask though: since the transmute effect of Shred Memory costs 3 mana, do you run into any problems in terms of speed? Or is it best saved for popping via a Dark Rit?
Yeah it definitely makes the deck one turn slower, but it's better to be slow than to do basically nothing. The petals help too, and running Shred Memory will require 4 petals. I only have 7, and the other 4 are in another deck, so....
Looking like more of a sideboard, but I know it ain't there yet. I'm also certain that Empyrial Archangel and Angel of Despair are going in once I have copies.
I'm thinking less Dark Rits since it tends to end up a dead card more often than not, the Distresses are okay but not great so they get to stay on the side. I was told to bump it up to 18 lands so as not to miss a drop. Terastodon's still a filler for Angel of Despair.
Any suggestions on the SB? It's got less filler now but I know I can still do much better.
Aaand, eventually I know I'll have to borrow or shell out for Thoughtseize.
I was thinking about using Serum Powder in this deck. It's pretty easy to randomly get a ridiculous hand with turn 1 / turn 2 animate, and this deck is pretty redundant, so it might be worth a shot. I would run 4 Jins and more shroud creatures (Empyrial Archangel and Inky) in a deck with 4 Serum Powder though, since getting one killed will significantly reduce the chance of animating another if Powder was used.
The Quicksilver Amulets are there as a derpy possible solution to GY-bombing, though I'm considering replacing those with Ratchet Bombs once I can acquire some. The Buried Alive and Dark Rit in the SB are just filler; one of those will very likely become the fourth Nev's Disk and the other will be...some other utility creature.
Funeral Charms replaced the Pimps because hey, they're instant and in a pinch a pump or swampwalk could be useful. Terastodon is getting switched out for Angel of Despair and Blazing Archon for Empyrial Archangel eventually.
This is the list I'm going to try out, I decided to add more creatures and go with Liliana and smallpox for discard outlets, not quite sure how well it's going to work out, but it looks like a fun deck to me.
The list seems solid. No gimmicks, just good stuff. Gitaxian Probe and Cabal Therapy are perfect together, and running 12 animate spells practically guarantees that the deck will see them. Not sure what Thraximundar and Sky Swallower are for, though.
It's very much a budget list and it's in a small field, but it defeated UW Stoneblade with maindeck Karakas in the finals. That's got to count for something!
