Black/White Lifegain Deck- Any Advice is Welcome

  • #1
I'm a newbie when it comes to magic. I've been playing since around Zendikar, and have very little experience in the constructed format.

I recently opened a Felidar Sovereign in a draft and was inspired to make a deck. From there, I mostly looked up as many cards as I could find that fit the deck's basic function, and I looked up other decks with the same general purpose. From there I narrowed it down considerably, and this is the list I have now. At this point, I have about 41 cards and I'm not sure where to take it from here. It seems that my deck's purpose has shifted to being a triballey zombie/angel deck, and I'm not sure if that's the way I want it to go. Basically, I'd love any advice to which cards to take out.

I'm also not sure about format. In theory, it'd be nice for this to be a Legacy deck, but I'm also not sure of the monetary and time requirements of making a good one, as I'm completely unfamiliar with the metagame. For now at least, I've included cards from way back, so I've put it in the Legacy forums.

I've labeled them with their mana cost, if they're flying, and if they're an angel or a zombie.

    Creatures
    Ajani Goldmane 4
    Ajani’s Pridemate 2
    Baneslayer Angel 5 F A

    Serra Ascendant 1 F
    Sorin Markov 6
    Soul’s Attendant/Soul Warden 1
    Vampire Nighthawk 3 F
    Wall of Reverence 4 F
    Wurmcoil Engine 6

Instants, Sorceries, Enchantments and the like
    Celestial Mantle 6
    Dark Aura 1
    Doomblade 2
    Invincible Hymn 8
    Necromancer's Covenant- 6
    Nefashu 6 Z
    Zombie Master? 3 Z
    Undead Warchief 4 Z
    Corpse Harvester 5 Z
    Pacifism 2
    Path to Exile? 1

    Sanguine Bond- 5

hi, to be honest, i dont think that lifegain strategy (as a win condition) is competitive for legacy format. if you are building a deck to play casualy with your friends, its ok, but u can not expect it to place on a legacy tournament.
anyway i would drop black and play it monowhite you can get some inspiration in soul sister deck (used to be on standard a year ago)

    conley woods soul sister

    Creatures (24)

    4 Ajanis Pridemate
    4 Serra Ascendant
    4 Soul Warden
    4 Souls Attendant
    4 Ranger of Eos
    4 Kor Firewalker

    Spells (13)

    4 Survival Cache
    4 Brave the Elements
    2 Oblivion Ring
    3 Elspeth, Knight-Errant

    Lands (23)

    15 Plains
    4 Tectonic Edge
    4 Kabira Crossroads

this may be playeble on modern - with a few changes.
theres a few legycy infinite life combos (one is with cleric that gets +1 to toughness when targeted, shuko (infinite targeting) and the land which gives you life equeal sacrificed clerics toughness - sorry i dont have cardnames, goblins are attacking magiccards.info again)

I agree. Soul sisters is a very strong deck indeed. I play it myself.

If you insist on splashing black you could play things like:

    Dark Confidant
    Bitterblossom
    Vindicate
    Tidehallow Sculler
    Gerrard's Verdict
    Thoughtseize
    Hymn to Tourach

    Thanks for the advice!

Part of the point of making this deck though, was to make a deck, not necessarily to have the best deck possible, so while I've definitely learned something from Soul Sisters, I don't think I'm going to make a carbon copy of it.

I do want to stay in Black/White for the Sanguine Bond and others, however, I think you're right that for my first deck, I don't want to do it in Legacy, and I could make an extended deck with much less work, time and money involved.

I'll put some serious thought into the cards and strategies you recommended and then probably post back into the Extended forums with a basically completed deck.
