Hey guys!
I used to play quite a bit of magic years ago, from 7th edition to just after the kamigawa block I believe. I stopped playing since I had other stuff to do on friday night, which was when I played most.
Now, however, I'm at university and most people in my student group actually play the game, so I'm back!
Two weeks from now, we're going to have a legacy tournament, having never done any tournaments before and being quite rusty I need some help. Most of these guys just started playing this year or last year, so they shouldn't be too extreme. That + certain limitations on my budget for purchasing cards I might lack made me decide to post it in casual, and not in competitive.
If this was a bad decision on my part, I'll go ahead and repost in competitive.
This is the deck I'm looking to transform into more of a powerhouse:
Obviously it's not even legacy legal at this point, due to the skullclamps.
I've had a lot of fun with this deck (and previous itterations, it was in some form or the other the first deck I ever really made and stuck with for a time) but I don't think it's anywhere near competition ready.
I've toyed with putting some counters in there, as well as some "affinity for" artifacts for cheap extra creatures, but it always kinda felt like I was diluting the modular feel of it all.
So I could really use some help with figuring out a direction for this deck. As said, I'm kinda on a budget, but commons and uncommons shouldn't be a problem, and I can probably cash out for a rare or two too if they're relatively cheap(and provided I can get a hold of the card at the place I buy my singles at).
And, of course, you never know, I might have the card already.
One final note: I also have a sliver deck and a bunch of slivers lying around, I considered using that one as a base instead but ultimately opted for the modular one. If you think I made a mistake there, let me know and I could make a sliver post too..
Your deck looks like the win condition will be by attacking with creatures.
Maybe try to increase the number of Arcbound Crushers? He's good, espescially if equipped with the collar.
And lastly, I notice that there will be a lack of card drawing spells (since Skullclamp isn't allowed).
You might want to try infiltration lens. Can also be tutored witht the mage, and equipping it to a large creature will usually give your opponent a hard decision on whether to block or not.
Yeah, replacements for skullclamp were exactly what I needed, and it does give the trinket mage path some extra flair.
I was also considering adding another vedalken archmage.
What do you guys think about the overal composition of the deck though? I'm thinking that for a competitive match, arcbound overseer and Darksteel Forge might be too expensive, although vedalken engineer does help.
Should I include some non-modular artifact creatures (and if so, which ones would be good) or keep it like this? Or some counterspells or something?
Also, I have little experience with sideboards, what do I put in that?
Personally, I would replace the overseer with Triskelion. He's easier to cast, and gives you access to direct damage.
Your modular creatures would feed him counters as well.
If you tell me what kind of decks that you would possibly face in the tournament, then I could suggest a sideboard.
The draft up 'till now, with the tips people gave here.
Baslisk collar is a bit priecy so I'll probably only grab one.
Two trinket mages should be enough to ensure I get the infiltration lenses, seeing as there's already 3 of the lenses itself in the game.
Kept one overseer for now, but still internally debating about that. Also added a vedalken Archmage and made some more lands artifact lands.
Considering adding one more type of artefact land (from a different colour) since most of the spell are artefacts anyway...
For the sideboard: I don't know much about my opponents, but I have played a few... There'll almost certainly be some kind of red deck with zap spells and goblins, merfolk control deck is possible, infect/poliferate deck, there'll be an artifact "affinity for" deck and a green or red/green creature deck... that's all I know.
Goblins? Infect decks?
Your deck needs to be faster.
-1 Cloak +1 more collar (if you can afford it)
-2 Archmage +2 Trinket, the deck needs more speed and consistency. If you're getting burned badly, being able to search for the collar can be a lifesaver.
- 1 Arcbound Overseer +1 Triskelion, he's great when you're getting mauled by a bunch of 1/1 goblin tokens. Will also get rid of some merfolk, provided you can slip him past their counterspells. And your energy chambers are good for "reloading" him.
Sideboard suggestion:
Chill will give goblins and other mono red decks a hard time
Well, I could probably afford another collar, but the place I'd buy at only seems to have one in store atm.
I'll try asking people I know for one.
Else I guess another infiltration lens... or perhaps I can find something else for one mana that'd be useful.
Agreed on the overseer.
And wow, that chill is quite nice for a common
I also got a few Hibernation for the green decks. Perhaps Domineer for the artefact creature ones, and some counterspells for unforseen things...
The way I understand it, I can exchange cards between my side board and my deck in between rounds, right? Knowing me, I'll probably have a hard time deciding what to take out
I have one friend who's really hardcore about all this stuff, wish I knew what deck he'll play
Also, if I remove both of the vedalken archmages, my only remaining reason to play artefact lands is arcbound crusher... that might be too little incentive. Perhaps -1 vedalken archmage -1 arcbound crusher + 2 trinket mages?
Your sideboard consists of 15 cards. You can exchange cards from your 60 card maindeck with cards from your sideboard on Game 2.
Domineer looks nice. But if you're confident on producing 2 more mana, Mind Control is another choice. It will get any creature, assuming that creature doesn't have shroud or protection from blue.
EDIT: If it's to sideboard against a pure artifact deck, Domineer is better.
Yeah, I figure this way I already have red, green and artefacts sideboarded against.
Thinking about finding out if it's going to be a green deck or a red/green deck for possible inclusion of flashfreeze
For any other colour some counterspells and perhaps an evacuation will have to suffice I guess
Also, if I remove both of the vedalken archmages, my only remaining reason to play artefact lands is arcbound crusher... that might be too little incentive. Perhaps -1 vedalken archmage -1 arcbound crusher + 2 trinket mages
Ok, I didn't notice that you edited your post.
Well, that's up to you. If you like the card draw from the archamage, then go ahead.
- or if you really want continous card advantage, try using 2 Crystal Ball instead of the archmages. Easier to cast, and has the added benefit of not being susceptible to creature removal. Your deck has a lot of land, Crystal Ball will help you avoid drawing too many lands.

Sorry, I miscounted, there are only 58 cards in the deck.
I suggest adding 2 more Trinket Mage, or 2 more of any low cost creature / artifact you want to put in.

That's convenient since I was planning to anyway ^^
I agree with this statement. I do like the Phyrexian one a lot more than the Mirran one, but I think I'll stick with my "What Color Would You Like Me To Beat You With Today?" and "T That Ass" shirts.
Land base should be faster if it's all artifacts. The tap-for-two's are a bit pricey, but the Locus lands aren't bad. Check out Cloudpost and the new Glimmerpost. Energy Chamber and Steel Overseer are good to beef up your dudes. Voltaic keys with artifact accelerators: Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Grim Monolith will also take it to the next level speed-wise. Mishra's Factory is also good as a target for counters that would otherwise go down the drain.
The Certach's are interesting, but what else would you take out for it?
The fireshrieker is still in there because it's left over from the casual deck, I'm guessing you would have it removed because of the general inconsistency in only running one of a card?

Yeah, I've not updated the thread in a while, but I already included 4 glimmerposts and 4 cloudposts and together with Vedalken Engineer they usually give me more mana than I could ever find a use for, really.
Main problem doesn't seem to be finding the mana to play stuff, but actually just having stuff to play.
Usually even if I have a bunch of Infiltration Lens in play, my creatures just aren't threatening enough for my opponent to choose to block.
Had some amusing times with Triskelion + basilisk collar though.

Other suggested cards:
Basilisk Collar - can be tutored with Trinket mage and makes your creatures deadlier in combat.
Fabricate - helps tutor for cards in your deck.

Nice to hear about this.
Darksteel Juggernaut can be a good replacement for the Arcbound Bruiser. Can't be naturalized, burned, but still susceptible to -1/-1 counters and white removal (Day of Judgment won't get rid of it though).
Steel Overseer would certainly add strength to the deck if you can afford to get some.
