legacy is not a healthy format in attendance and support for quite a while now.
IMO, it's BY FAR the best MTG format, very diverse, very interactive, plenty of possible strategies different decks, powerful rogues....
but the entrance bar is just waaaaay to high and it's just natural less and less people will be playing competitive legacy as the time goes because card availability is just terrible for old staples, and surely the reserved list isn`t doing it any favours....
if there's no real official support and fewer and fewer stores promoting events, the most likely outcome is that legacy will "die" in time.
will become more and more of a niche format.
I'll still be playing it in my kitchen table though.
lol.
I feel that the costs for legacy have been a huge barrier to entry for a few years now. I find it's mostly a regional thing, some cities/stores have a large playerbase but overall it's hard to find events outside of GPs.
Nothing dies if people still play it. It only dies in the eyes of people who want to be part of what is the new flavor. And SCG wants to go trendchasing with Pioneer so they can sell cards that were originally marked for less than a buck at a higher price and rake in profits.
its not dead. but "as a guy who plays in tournaments "i play what is available."
To rekindle the older formats you need wizards support. like releasing a "Legacy Horizon's" set each year. If you catch my drift. Something meant for the format specifically. Wizards hasn't been doing yearly support in any way.
I haven't cast a force of will in 5 years.....
Biggest hurdle is the damn virus. this hurts magic through all of the formats

I think it's impossible to rekindle legacy as is without destroying the restricted list.
while every deck packs a ton of ABUR duals, it's impossible to lower the entry barrier.
and if WotC bans de dual lands, the few dudes still playing legacy will riot.
so.....
I’m under the impression that WOTC wants to shelve Legacy like it did Vintage. To be show cased at Eternal Weekend and nothing more. The Reserved list is definitely the cause, and truly, WOTC cannot support a format that it cannot print to.
It’s looking like WOTC wants Modern to occupy the space Legacy does(did). The rarified, eternal big boy. Pioneer can then become the new Modern, the place you go after you’re over Standard but not into Commander.
For Legacy to “survive” it’ll have to follow the model of the Old School 93/94 community. It’ll have to be an organized, dedicated, grass roots, player run format. Before the societal collapse, in most major cities you could find weekly, some Old School meet up or tournament. OS also had a thriving webcam tournament scene.
If Legacy players can manage that, the format will live.
at least in my area, Southern Ontario Canada, the areas that thrived are the ones that had stores that would run events and players that have collections that allow them to play the format and possibly even lend out decks.
Wizards probably isn't going to support much legacy so it'll be up to stores and players themselves
Magic Arena will allow formats like Legacy and Vintage to be as relevant as standard. Still nothing beats holding the actual seven cards in your hand, but the time has long passed for the old formats to be played that way. Magic Arena will at least make sure that they continue to be played. In many ways is a dream come true for hardcore players who always wanted to play the formats but couldn't.
meh legacy was "dying" when it started, it only survived because of casual support. Not because of SCG or WOTC, those merely monetised it and brought the public eye to it.
Those who are supposed to leave will leave, the rest of us will truck on.
So no Legacy is not going to die, with or without the RL.
What are we thinking?
