After two long years (has it really been THAT long?!) I have finally gotten the drive to finish version five of my budget legacy guide. As of right now, the guide has a little over 65 decks to check out, and is now using a fancy new Google Doc format. So, come on in and check out the budget lists!
As a side note, about 20 more decks are scheduled to be added within the coming week. So, be sure to check back in a bit for even more interesting budget lists!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please comment, email, or whatever! I'm always open!
This guide was written for all budget-minded Legacy players. Decks have been sorted by the general archetypes of Aggro, Control, Combo, and Midrange, as well as by cost. If you have any questions, e-mail me at Spooky386@gmail.com, pm me here, or post here in this thread!
As a note to the mods, if possible I would like this thread stickied and my previous version archived. (thanks!) If the current Google Doc format is not in line with MTGSalvation forum rules please let me know as soon as possible so that I can work to reformat the content into something acceptable.
Thanks! I was actually very worried about the layout, and whether or not people would like it or accept it. Good to know my worries were not justified!
People have been having issues viewing the document on mobile. If you are trying to look at it on your phone I would suggest testing the link on a computer, or using the Google Docs app on your phone to look at it, instead of the web browser.
I tried to word the explanation carefully so that this wouldn't be confused ("protect your token makers") but I guess I need to retype it. What I was trying to say was you could use it to protect your token makers, which could then rebuild an army. It's king of a last resort option, but it's still an option.
I like the new format, very well done. I especially love the overview you get of all the decks and how you get redirected to the actual decklist when you click on one. And always good to see new added decks ofcourse.
Its nice to see you have included changelogs. I hope you will keep using that, as it gets super easy for us to find out whenever you post new decks.
Is the squandered resources articles completely out? It was cool once in a while to get a more decriptive explanation of some decks. Anyways I understand if it took too much time or it was hard coming up with new decks to write about.
Was it too much of a work to include the "adding more money" section as you have had in your previous primers? I know its rough work to do, but it was a quite cool extra information of the deck would optimally be. It's especially nice for people to know in decks like LEDless dredge, where they get to know that they can optimize their deck further by getting the LEDs to make it really competetive but even in the more gimmicker types of decks, it nice to have. If you find time/energy to do it in a way that doesn't screw up the format, I think you should do it.
As a last mention: remember to edit your "note" thats in the bottom of every post you make, so that you direct people to this thread and not the Primer 4 as it is now.
I'm happy to hear you like the new format! I plan to continue to use the change logs, no worries there! My Squandered Resources are certainly something I would like to continue in the future. Currently, life has gotten in the way. Being a teacher means most of my free time is spent grading and lesson planning. Maybe during the summer I will try and continue them.
The "adding more money" section is something I plan to add in the future. As of now, I just wanted to get the deck lists and initial system out to the public. This allows me to see a general reaction, how people like the new format, and fix initial bugs. As time goes on I will continue to add more decks and features.
Thanks for reminding me about my signature! I had completely forgotten.
Chalk me up as one that can't open the link on iPhone. Copying the link in a new tab gets the same error. Other google docs I haven't had this issue. The google docs app doesn't appear to have a way to drop a link into it.
I remember chatting w you some about some budget builds in the past and have liked your prior work spooky. I look forward to pulling it up at work tomorrow and maybe I can add it to my google account and make it work that way
I really wish I knew an exact workaround, as I'm sure many of my readers prefer to view the guide on their phone when they are on the go. :/ If you figure something out please let me know.
Looking it up on the computer then opening it in google docs on the phone works. It won't auto size to my screen so there is some scrolling around but it's a workaround
You really out did yourself here! I've already fallen in love with UW Thopters! Any sideboard suggestions for that deck? On a side note, A Tribe Called Quest's link to MTGGoldfish takes us to the BG Midrange page, not A Tribe Called Quest's.

UW Thopters is a great one for sure. Because you use tutors, I would start there when it comes to your sideboard. Look for artifacts and enchantments that can be used to hate out certain strategies. Additional creature hate never hurt anyone, either.
While borders are not one of them (both have white) Third edition (revised) lands have a few differences from unlimited. Different rules text is the biggest one. Another is that Unlimited duels tend to be darker. You can make some comparisons using the links below.
Hey -spooky- I just came across this thread; didn't realize an updated primer was out. It looks great!
I had made a thread a while ago about switching from modern to legacy and was pretty undecided about it for quite a while. I've since settled on your GB Nic Fit list. The other option was to upgrade my modern merfolk or modern infect to legacy but both of those would be pretty expensive since I had none of their upgrade pieces. BG Nic Fit seemed the most affordable given I already had green fetches + Bayou. I also like the way BG Nic Fit plays and it gives me something different vs doing the same stuff I'm doing in modern just in another format.
So that being said, how would you upgrade your BG Nic Fit list you have posted in the primer? I already took out the 8 budget duals and put in 4 Verdant Catacombs, 2 Windswept Heath, 2 Bayou. I'm just looking for something to shoot for with trades over the next year, but yeah, I've got most of this together already other than the deeds, Meren, and living wishes. Those will probably be the first 7 cards I trade for. Do you think the Pod version is stronger? Should I just build towards that? I do like Pod and have just a single copy, but they are inexpensive, so it's not that big of a deal to add a couple more.
Hey, sorry for the late reply! It's finals week and my students have been hounding me.
The first thing I would do if I really wanted to make the list better would be to change the land base. Since you have done this already, I would start looking at the creatures. Tireless Tracker is an option to consider, as are Kitchen Finks, Eternal Witness, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, and Thrun, the Last Troll. Beyond this and what you have already done, I don't think there is any room for improvements until you start to splash another color.
As far as Pod goes, I am not confident enough in my skills or testing with the card to give you a straight answer. I know that the more options (search targets) you have, the stronger the card is. This makes me think that if you want to use pod, you should splash another color, either red or white. If you want to try it with just the 2 colors I would look at 3 color nic fit pod lists and see if you can find synonymous replacements for the off-color creatures they use as pod targets.
Thanks very much for your advise and time! No worries about delay in response, I'm not terribly active on the forum, so it works out. Also, I mostly play modern and pauper at my LGS, so Legacy is infrequent enough that I don't feel pressed to evolve the deck all that quickly.
I'll look into those creature improvements if I end up staying BG. From my [limited] research, I've found that BUG Pod Nic Fit has put up the best / most consistent results. Blue is just SO expensive ... meaning I'll probably never have blue duals, just have to make due with blue shocks. Fortunately, I do have 2 breeding pool, 1 watery grave, and 10 green fetches (4 verdant, 4 windswept, 2 misty). I just don't know if that's good enough to not be super janky. At least I have the 2 Bayou from when I played back in the 90s.
At the moment the BG version is super consistent, but I'm sure splashing either blue or white (maybe both for Atraxa, Praetors' Voice, Brainstorm, and Siege Rhino) would be sweet. I just don't know how awful the manabase would be with all shocks other than the bayous.
I may go over to the source and ask what any of the experienced Nic Fit players recommend / if the card power is worth the tradeoff with non-ideal / painful manabase.
Thanks a lot -spooky- This is definitely a great resource and starting place!

I've played quite a bit of Rhino Pod, great fun, but lacking a certain edge. If you're moving upwards, either you go with BUG Pod or, my personal preference, would be to upgrade to Shift Pod (no need for blue!):
I saw on The Source that you were working on an affinity list. After falling in love with the deck in pauper I tried porting it to legacy with budget in mind. This is what I came up with: here is the list. I am planning on doing some testing with it online and bring it to my LGS's saturday legacy tourney to see how it holds up. Wanted to see if you had any feedback/recommendations.
If anyone has advice for an affinity list I would love input.

besides the black vs white borders and the obvious price difference, is there much of a difference between unlimited and 3rd edition dual lands?
