Hey everyone. In case you haven't read yet, SCG has cut pretty much all Legacy support for 2017. There appears to be one Legacy Open and two Legacy Classics for the entire year. From what I gather, they're making most of the Classics both Standard and Modern, so if you scrub out of day 1, you can play with your same deck day 2 (which admittedly makes a lot of sense). Huge bummer for me since I look forward to those Classics more than any other MTG event. What do you guys & gals think this means for the format going forward? More doom and gloom? Are we just getting closer to big brother Vintage?
SCG also said they were close to cutting their circuit altogether. There are presumably some other issues at play there.
SCG has been irrelevant to the west coast for a while now. The only real loss from that standpoint is regular decklists from large paper tournaments. I'm hoping that someone steps up to fill the void and there are a couple groups holding large tournaments and/or streaming content that seem to be doing a decent job. Whether they are able or willing to transition to larger events remains to be seen. That said, the RL and climbing prices are a significant problem and there's no question that there are going to be larger issues with legacy if those aren't addressed.
Legacy has more diehard fans than the other formats in my experience. It might shift to more localized scenes, but one company abandoning the format (after they already slashed support for it and stopped holding events west of the Mississippi) is not a death knell.

[Pr]Jaya | Estrid | A rotating cast of decks built out of my box.
Legacy was the only real reason why I was interested in SCG streams as of late, since I would often watch GP streams unless that GP was a format I didn't care about, mainly limited
It kinda sucks to see the company that used to be one of the bigger supporters of legacy stop streaming it. I mean Face to Face still has a fair share of Legacy Sunday Showdowns up here, so at least there's that
I can't see Legacy dying after this, as it has a fair share of die hard supporters
i was being dramatic but um,
it fell apart in my area.
a few people refuse to part with their 40 duals though.
still have a strong gut feeling that the reserve list is gonna go or that the no reserve list legacy thing will be a thing.
but it needs to succeed at the local level first before the bigger events can grow.
I lost faith a long time ago when it came to the reserved list being abolished, duals getting reprinted down to reasonable prices/$50 for an underground sea or something like that. The entire problem with legacy since the beginning was that it's growth was capped by the number of duals in existence never getting higher, only lower. While modern doesn't have this problem as they sure won't reprint goyf at normal rare/get it down to a reasonable price, it still has more copies being printed whenever they do a modern masters set as I imagine if they didn't reprint it in a modern masters set there would be riots and the price would skyrocket even more. You have basically no chance to open an underground sea in a pack, as the pack price on revised is outrageously expensive and there's a 1 in over 100 odds of you opening a specific dual land.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
I find it really funny that the 'reserve list' problem is basically just a 'dual lands' problem. And it is really unfortunate that such a basic tool is forever off limits to future formats.
I wonder if there is a viable way to crowdsource (?) a Legacy circuit. Something to unify the local metas. Events that run on the same days like SCG Regionals, or even something like MTGO Leagues. The meta could move and grow together then. I don't know about you all, but local metas get boring to me. I love the thrill of going to a new city and not knowing who the delver guy is, who the deathblade guys is, who the lands guy is...
Tales of Adventure seems to be the bigger company that is taking up the eternal format slack that Wizards and SCG are leaving behind. They are providing competitive support towards eternal extravaganza and some other big tournament event that I can't remember the name of. I'm hoping this will catch on and my local stores that host weekly/monthly legacy events will pick these up.
