Building fringe decks feels like an exercise in first world problems. I'm sleeving up Aluren and the cards that I need are Dream Stalker and a fourth Aluren. Not the duals, not the fetches, not the Imperial Recruiters. The $3 rare and the $0.05 common.

I'm sure you're mistaken. Aluren is now $6 and Dream Stalker is $0.15. The deck's price is going through the roof
Do you have a list you like? I'd be happy to shoot you mine if you're looking for options to try.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

I've seen yours (assuming there haven't been major changes since you posted either here or over at the source). I'm probably going to start with some close to that and tweak from there. I do like having access to maindeck FoW, despite the local meta being pretty combo light much of the time.

The maindeck has been stable for awhile, so wherever you're looking, it's probably current. Biggest change has honestly just been the tuning of the SB — I'd update to this:
If your meta is totally dominated by and overrun with Delver, you might want to shift the manabase to include a Badlands and then migrate to more Baleful Strixen, but otherwise, I'd stick to favouring coiling oracles.

I think you must be mistaken. It's an upgrade on Hawk — it's harder to hit on counterbalance
(There is truth there actually: Recruiter being a 3 mana hawk instead of a 2 mana one has been pretty big deal verses Miracles)
I of course hope you'll venture up north again at some point so that we might live the dream and make the mirror match happen.
I might need to learn to play the deck first. I'm still at the point of building it where I'm hoping my 4th Aluren shows up in time for me to play it this week.
There's a decent chance I'll be up that way again sometime. I've got a good friend (who is very, very into magic) in Davis, another in San Francisco, and my in-laws live a couple hours out of Sac, so I'm already in that neck of the woods pretty often.

So they finally announced the side events for GP Oakland. This is going to be the first GP that I attend without competing in the main event.
I'm so used to the Bay Area getting Limited GPs that I was caught off guard when they assigned us Type2 for 2016. Fortunately, CFB solved my conundrum of whether to suit up for 15 rounds of Standard: They announced a large Legacy tournament on site.
My disappointment over the main event format is quickly turning into excitement over the Legacy side event.

That looks like they're expecting a really good turn out for Legacy. They really should have done this for Sunday though. Gives people the chance who scrubbed out for Day Two to attend this. I'm going to show up on Sunday. Not to play in any events, but to see if I can get Patrick Sullivan to sign my Lightning Bolts and Grim Lavamancers. If there are others like BDM and Tom Ross there, I want sigs of theirs as well.
LOL, I think I'm also going to make a cardboard sign that says, "I need Jace, the Mind Sculptor, if you need Liliana of the Veil" and wear it.
been looking to get into legacy build pox as a starter deck for a while and finally have somewhat of a budget deck I plan on finishing as I go
Might try out a legacy event at 401 games in Toronto in a few weeks, can anyone give me tips on how legacy is different from modern and standard, I'm kinda intimidated by the size of the format

It's slower than you think (except when it's not) and there are a lot of available strategies. You're probably going to get blown out at least a few times by plays you didn't see coming, and there's a pretty good chance that you're going to end up playing some fringe deck that you've never heard of, possibly attacking on an angle you didn't see coming. Look at it as a learning experience and a chance to see some interesting cards you might not have otherwise, and it should still be fun.
I would try and familiarize yourself with the most common decks. You can't know everything that you're going to run into, but odds are extremely high that you see miracles, delver, storm, eldrazi (at the moment), shardless, etc. You don't need detailed knowledge of each deck, but I would try and get a sense of what their opening plays and general gameplan are. If your opponent leads off with Trop → threat, you should at least be thinking about Daze. If they play a T1 Top, you have a little more breathing room but probably want to play a little more aggressively, like dropping a threat instead of playing discard. If you get Gitaxian Probed right off the bat, you're going to be focusing much more heavily on discard than setting up a clock. You should have a clear idea of your gameplan, but you also want to be able to adjust to your opponent's deck.
In terms of difference between standard/modern and legacy, the big ones are the obvious power level differences and the breadth of the strategies you might encounter. The power level differences are pretty much what you would expect. There are very good threats and very good answers. The format is, on the whole, less forgiving of misplays than standard. The quality of the answers means that it's generally slower than modern despite the better threats. The turn 0/1 combo decks that get stereotyped in exist, but they're very fragile strategies in the face of free countermagic and don't get played as often as more reliable, slower decks. That said, early turns are still very important in most games, and something like miracles can set up a gamestate that's very difficult to beat within the first couple turns. You want to be doing something in those turns as well. For pox, that probably means discard. You're also unlikely to run into the string of midrange decks or linear aggro/combo decks that you might find in other formats, which is why it's important to be able to adjust your gameplan to what your opponent is doing. The last legacy event I played, I faced shardless BUG (midrange), nic fit (ramp), ANT (combo), and angel stompy (prison). Even if you see mostly tier 1 decks, you're all but guaranteed to run into someone playing their pet deck as well. You will not know all of these decks. Make sequencing decisions and sideboarding decisions the best you can, and accept that sometimes you don't know exactly what to do or don't have sideboard options against a weird strategy.
I agree that it's an intimidating format to start, but the only way to get any better is to jump in. The community is generally pretty good in my experience and almost everyone likes talking about their deck, so ask questions and chat with people. You'll get to see cool decks, you'll get insight into how to play against decks, you'll probably get some advice about your own deck, and you'll get to know the local legacy crowd. Don't worry too much about your record for the night and more than anything, have fun. Legacy is one of the best formats out there once you get into it.

thanks. That should help me when I go to a legacy tournament. With a format like legacy, I guess I just have to play a lot to see all the different decks

After a few impulse buys I'm three Gambles away from owning lands. Time to see if it actually is the secret best deck in the format (spoiler: can't be, because that's Aluren).

But RUG Lands gets to run Uba Mask and doesn't run Gamble. Surely you wish to lead a life behind the mask?

I do love me some Uba Mask. I don't think I could run RUG lands without LftL/cycling lands and Intuition to set it up (even if that's not what the typical builds do), and I sadly only have one of those too.

seems like there may be a bit more interest in Legacy around here, not sure if the interest is real or just will be short lived.

Did you ever try out an event?
must have somehow misread which post you were replying to before, sorry.
I've been playing a bit of legacy games, few and far in between though. Got a few games against BUG delver in between rounds at a PPTQ a few weeks ago. Destroyed him since he had a hard time since I kept him off blue and creatures.
It seems EMA has spiked interested a bit
attending legacy events is hard for me since they're a few hours out of town and I don't drive. Plus the only people that really play legacy work weekends
That makes it tough. I would actually play a lot more legacy if there were more local events on Sundays. I have very little desire to start a 4-5 round tournament at 7 pm when I have to work the next morning.
This week is probably the exception because I've been in a legacy mood recently. I just need to decide what I want to play. Leaning towards Aluren because that deck's a blast and I'm still pretty inexperienced with it, but there are a bunch of things I want to play around with and I don't play frequently enough to get to all of them. There are also some old favorites that I haven't picked up in a while, like Spanish Inquisition.
I'll probably try and play a little more once EMA drops too, because I like having a local legacy community and want to encourage anyone trying to get into it.
