I ask this because I feel like it is not needed but is more of a want. I have both Death and Taxes for Legacy, and Merfolk for Modern in my collection. They are both complete, but at the moment they both share my playset of Modern Masters Aether Vials. Now this is fine and dandy as the art is in flavour with Merfolk, but at the moment I am trying to get all the arts of cards that match the flavour of the Death and Taxes. An example of this is the full art basic lands from Zendikar that look like they join onto the Wasteland art. I have noticed that in the art of Wasteland, the trees look very similar to the Darksteel Aether Vial and they suit the flavour of the deck a lot more than that of the Modern Masters Vials.
So am I insane in wanting two different playset for both? What are your thoughts on obtaining multiple playsets of cards in different arts?

You're not crazy. This game is about customizing and collecting as well as strategy. I do things like this all the time and meet players that do the same thing. I have a friend that collects foil, miscut Japanese cards for his UW tron deck...
If you have the funds allocated for Magic as a hobby, I don't see how this is a problem at all.
As someone who had a complete legacy English language Reanimator deck, then decided to switch over a majority of the cards to Chinese, nope you're good. Welcome to the pimping side of Magic.
Oh, I also run legacy DnT which runs the fancy full art foil Serra Avengers instead of the boring regular ones.
You're free to get whatever cards you want in this collectible card game hobby, but personally I can't understand the desire to spend more money on cards that are already owned. That same outlay could go into expanding the collection. Until I have all the staples, including Tabernacle, I don't see why I should be buying the same thing twice.
I own 16 copies of Thoughtseize (2x Modern Affinity, 3x Legacy Elves, 4x Deathblade, 4x Standard, 3x Modern Jund). Yes, I'm too lazy to move them around even though they're all in the same sleeves.
Do whatever makes you happy.
Also, my wife is a Legacy DnT / Modern Merfolk player herself, and while we have two sets of vials, she prefers the MM's set over the originals and switches them in and out regardless. She also took my MM Sword of Fire and Ice for herself, so I'm stuck with the old one there too. Come to think of it, why the hell does she keep taking all of the best art and leaving me with the leftovers?!
Brb, filing for divorce.

Not at all weird... amongst my friends they consider me the angel collector... sadly my collection is nearing it's completion.. including reprints
I've always wanted a reprint of Avacyn and Livana... or at least make more reprints of angels that don't have reprints.. it makes my collection look much more impressive and colorful
To my surprise when they made vault angels.. I was thrilled and bought 2... yet I want more... almost tempted to add yugioh angels to the collection... rather not go to that
What are your thoughts on obtaining multiple playsets of cards in different arts?
I do this all the time for cheap cards that go into multiple decks just so I don't have to think about it. Nothings worse than rocking up for a card night and realising your powerful deck only has 52 cards. I like having alternate arts in the same deck too...
For expensive cards I tend to just roll with the one playset and sub in/out what I need.
Saying that, You're unlikely to lose money on buying a 2nd set and selling them. I assume Aether Vials would hold value even if they do print them again.
