So, I recently came across this hidden gem (at least that's what I think of it).
I have just started playing legacy, and more specifically Death & Taxes, so I'm not the most versed in what actually is legacy playable, but I'm always up for learning why it is/isn't.
So, my question is, would Sanctimony be a playable hatecard vs burn, or even any heavy red deck? And if so, in what kind of decks? Would DnT prefer for example Kor Firewalker due to the Æther Vial syngergy as well as not being a nonbo with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben?
The upside would be that if my opponent has a Volcanic Island and taps it for a blue mana we would still get 1 life from it, as well as red decks having more trouble dealing with enchantments.
The downside would be that it can't actually interact with the board in any kind of way, as well as the nonbo with Thalia I suppose.
First off, it's possible for cards that look borderline or iffy in theory to work out better than expected over the board. That could be the case here.
Next, dedicated burn sideboard hate is something of a rarity in DnT. The deck can generally get through those Burn matchups with Mother of Runes, Thalia, and Stoneforge Mystic. If Burn is uncommon in a given metagame, they'll leave it at that. Burn, on the other hand, generally brings potent hate out of the sideboard because no one would play that deck without a plan for Batterskull. They may also have Searing Blaze and Searing Blood, and any additional copies of Sulfuric Vortex will probably be coming in as well.
DnT sideboard cards for anti-burn have generally been drawn from this pool.
Kor Firewalker
Circle of Protection: Red
Warmth
Sunlance
Absolute Law
Leyline of Sanctity
These last two, Sunlance and Absolute Law, would be primarily intended for the Deathrite Shaman and Punishing Fire matchups, with splash damage for Burn and Goblins (which was once something that sometimes played against).
Warmth and Kor Firewalker, on the other hand, are clearly aimed squarely at Burn. The Firewalker is a Grade A Modern staple who will really blank most of Burn's cards. There isn't much synergy with Aether Vial though: generally the games that Burn wins will have DnT down to a single digit life total by the time two counters get on to the Vial. He can be hard on the mana in a deck with 8 colorless lands and zero fixing, and a Sulfuric Vortex turns off his most important ability. In Modern, some Burn decks run 1-4 Rain of Gore in the board. In Legacy, every Burn deck runs 2-4 (usually 4) Sulfuric Vortex somewhere.
Circle of Protection: Red is the elite anti-Burn card. The effect overwhelming, and it gets around every sideboard trick that Burn normally employs. The card reads, basically, "1: Counter target spell" because most Burn spells are one-shot deals. The card is extremely narrow, and probably wouldn't be brought in for any other matchup.
Leyline of Sanctity is rarely run in DnT. There are good reasons for that, but it could be considered.
I think the direct comparison between Sanctimony and these other cards is with Warmth and Circle of Protection: Red. Warmth probably gains life faster, Sanctimony shares the weakness to Sulfuric Vortex, and Circle of Protection remains unchallenged in its supremacy.
The main deck you're boarding Sanctimony against is Burn, and in that case, Warmth has the same mana cost and also lets you gain life from Fireblast. As a bonus, it hilariously hoses Release the Ants until your OmniTell opponent bounces it.
I wouldn't call hosing release the ants a real plus to warmth against omnitell when they'll be heavily likely to have drawn their whole deck/have an answer.
My problem with sanctimony is that in comparison to warmth there isn't any upside really because the opponent has to play a 3 mana burn spell for it to be better than warmth and 3 drops in there are rift bolt and sulfuric vortex/not happening really.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."

I would love to hear your guys's reasoning.
It would be a better card if the player taps a mountain and you gain 2 life. That would kill burn. Anyway I saw more damage from chill against burn, although it doesnt hurt burn that much today because burn isnt 'tap and go' like it used to be many years ago.
