I've got 3 main Legacy decks I play (Elves, D&T, and OmniTell) and I am thinking of trading away the rest of (what I call) staples for other decks out of my collection to help afford the final pieces and as I don't use them often. Although, I do not not know if this would be a bad idea. For an example of staples, I do own the whole decklist of UB Reanimator (minus the 4 underground seas) and the full list for Merfolk. This is just part of my collection as I use to play Reanimator and Merfolk although not anymore. So are these counted as Legacy staples? Should I trade them for remaining pieces for decks? Is there a major con if I trade them that I am not seeing? What is a key rule to know for when you should trade away your "staples"?

I'd say it's worth it to keep staples. There is hardly a rush to buy decks in legacy and the long term is that you have access to cards that you can use. You are better off slowly getting cards to finish off decks in my opinion; granted I have my collection because I like to play everything and anything, plus I brew. Your situation may be different.
The TL;DR version:
If you're happy with what you have and only want to play those, have at 'er and sell. Otherwise you would be better off to just slowly acquire cards
